I joined the group just for kicks lol.

Yes, but in all fairness, that person is also a URM. Yes they still need to be academically qualified, but they DO have a slightly lesser standard to meet.

If in some rare chance I get in, it would probably be me :D

Well good luck, cayumie. I wish you the best. I have low SAT too and really want to go to Duke very badly. :(

According to Espenshade et. al 2005, the standard is lesser by 345 points.

I believe that person has also said that she is low income, so that's probably a bit of a bump also.

does being low income help for duke? and does it help for the ivies?

You'd have to be really low-income. Race is the big one.

Thank you pagel60.

What is really considered a hook? Just something weird and unusual that most students don't have?

I mean, I've done graphic designs for the borough's chamber of commerce (Queens of NYC), wrote/interviewed/researched/recorded sound clips for the 6 PM news on a radio station (internship) and went through a hell of a past.

So I'm not sure if that's enough to make me 'interesting'.
And I don't think it helps that I'm Asian since we're not exactly under-represented (Thai, btw)

How would you define "really low-income"?

Does being really low-income indicate you as a URM, or a hook of some sort?

I'm not speaking as an admissions expert by any means; I applied to schools a very long time ago. My suspicion is that having family-income be a "hook" would probably require something along the lines of homelessness.

Nothing aside from actually being a URM qualifies you for that status. That's about skin color, period. No ifs ands or buts.

Mmmm I know an URM male who got in with a 27 ACT, goodbutnotstellar grades (A's/B's) okay EC's but nothing WHOASPECIAL!....he couldn't go though, because of the financial situation....which was sad. He was a good guy, he deserved it. But yeah. My two cents.

if i get in, mines would definitely be one of the LOWEST. but im crossing my fingers, i mean. maybe ill get lucky..? hahaha (1970 btw)

my friend is low income. by that i mean social welfare.

my bro got in with a 28 ACT and was ranked 16/100 at our bad public school, but now it's five years later and I'm worried about getting in with a 33 and a 4.0

well, I've basically been admitted (BSAI = admitted), and i have 1800 SAT, 28 ACT....but my course load and stuff has been really difficult and I wrote really good essays. My counselor showed emotion today for the first time and hugged and congratulated me. It made me feel lovely

whats a urm?

^^^
Under Represented Minority

pagEL60, you have to be like dirt poor. Welfare check, living in the projects, mother working at the local strip joint for some extra bucks to put food on the table, that sort of thing (JUST kidding, don't tear me up for that last one)

lol Yeah that's pretty much me. But being Asian probably won't help.

Anyways, I hope I can be the person with the lowest stats getting into Duke! haha
