When does the new US news ranking come out?

Just curious, when does the new set of rankings come out? I wanna know how our buddy Penn is gonna do.

It usually comes out in Sept/Oct. I heard Penn was moving into a tie with Yale for third place, but that's just what I've read on these boards...don't hold me to that.

lets hope!! that would be awesome.

Why would it change how you think about penn?

It would be awesome for the prestige whores though. And here on CC they are the majority.

if penn is ranked 3, the magazine should be put out of business no offense to the penn dudes and I LOVE THE SCHOOL. However, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT are on another league, and it is just unfathomable for Penn to be on the same foot as those schools. However, hope all is well come US NEWS RELEASE DAY.

My prediction is that it will slide to 5 probably or remain at 4.

Actually, I'll be arriving at Penn in two weeks, and I don't think it should be ranked #4. Trust me, I love Penn (or else I wouldn't be attending). I just personally feel it shouldn't be ranked above Stanford/MIT. I think Penn belongs at around #6 (tied with Duke). However, this is just my own personal opinion. Heck, coming from a communty college, I'm grateful to be attending any school in the top 10-15.

All hell would break loose if Penn went up to number 3. The CCers will be up in arms if that happens. I agree with Thomas though, Penn should be #6 and I actually think it will be number 5 this year behind Stanford.

Class of 2009! (At the Ivy League School with the best total college experience)

August 19

haha I honestly think we're the only school that's this anxiously anticipating the release of the newest USNWR rankings! though I do think Penn will be tied for 3rd, because admissions increased selectivity with the class of 2009

Penn's place at 4th this year is mostly based on the "Faclty resource" ranking, however they calculate that.

the funniest thing about the ranking is that the people who criticize it the most care about it the most...ha.

so wait a second -- you guys who are (VERY ARBITRARILY) placing penn behind some other schools (on a very UNARBITRARY ranking system) because of (and it is indeed because of this -- even if you all don't admit it) penn's perceived status 20 years ago (because 20 years ago penn used to be a * school) find fault when you see someone else making a decision you perceive to be arbitrary? are you even serious? the stoics would be unimpressed.

the *only subjective part of the rankings comes from other schools.

so in short, you're all either misinformed or hypocrites!

I don't feel I am a hypocrite. Me placing Penn at #6 was strictly my own personal opinion/preception. It was no way influenced by any outside criteria other than how I personally view it. Again, I don't think #6 is too shabby or something to be ashamed of...

yeah, but you've gotta realize (and i'm saying this with love) that your opinions mean nothing (and should mean nothing) on a list that should be entirely non-opinion based.

Entirely non-opinion based? What do you think the peer assessment score is?

Again, Panda said:
the *only subjective part of the rankings comes from other schools."
So while Panda believes the ranking SHOULD be non-opinion based, he/she acknowledges that there is SOME opinion factored into it.

However, I think what Panda is trying to say and what most of us believe is that opinions shouldn't have much weight, because despite Penn's recent advancements on many fronts, people still have an outdated perception of Penn.

The thing is, nobody should be going to a school because of its name or rank in the first place. I come from Wisconsin, and 90% of the people I talk to have NO IDEA what Penn is. If they say "oh cool, Penn State" I politely correct them and tell them it's actually a different school, but I don't go beyond that. I didn't go to Penn because of its US News Ranking, and I'm not going to tell somebody "Hell no! Penn St.?!?! You've GOT to be kidding me. Penn is IVY LEAGUE. Penn State is some ridiculous inferior Big 10 school. Ugh seriously, you know absolutely nothing." That is pretentious, rude, assholish, etc etc etc.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, take the rankings for what they are; don't live and breathe them. And please, for all high school students.... pick the school you think you belong at, don't pick a school because of its name. It'll make for four unhappy years.

IT is in, would look like this:

Harvard
Yale
Penn/Pton
Duke/Stanford
MIT/Caltech
Columbia/Brown
NWU/WStL/Dmouth
Cornell/Chicago
Georgetown/JHU
Rice/Emory
UCB/Vanderbilt
UM/CMU
UVA/UCLA
Tuft/NYU/Notredame
UICC/UWis/UWA/U Pitt
BC/BU/CWRU
UF/UNC/Tulane
OSU/UCSD/UCSB/UMINN
RPI/Lehigh/Rutgers
George Washinton/Bill&mary/Penn St/BYU

it's in? what do you mean?

Pandas..you're right. I understand my opinion means nothing, nor do I want it to mean anything. My opinion is just that...my opinion. I am unsure why these topics seem to stir up so much controversy. A post that originally starts out to be fun and humorous always seems to end up making people angry and frustrated. It's really not that big of a deal.
I do have to admit that I have always agreed with what Pandas has said on these boards.

MIT/Caltech
Columbia/Brown
NWU/WStL/Dmouth
Cornell/Chicago
Georgetown/JHU

all should be ranked ahead of duke
