If I am in the top 25% and have the necessary test scores to be automatically admitted, do I have to worry about turning in my application super early (say, August 1st)?
Also, how important is it to write thoughtful essays and/or having good recommendations if I am automatically admitted?

If your math and verbal scores = 1300 and you are in top 25%, you’re an automatic admit; however, to be sure that you get the major you want, you probably should still at least meet the essay requirement and apply within August-September. Acceptance at A&M has become less of a sure thing if you’re not top ten per cent in the last two years, especially since UT lowered the percentage by which they are obligated–10% went to 8%, back up to 9% (I believe) for this year. That meant more students were clamoring for A&M if they were in that 1-2% that could be denied to UT, so many students who were borderline (like top 11-12%) didn’t get in at A&M this year. For most of them, probably there was some other handicap, like lower test scores or not many challenging classes on their senior year and transcipt.
So, message is–cover all your bases.
PS-- More likely to get the dorm you want too the earlier you are accepted and do the housing application.

Is there any incentive for me to write particularly insightful essays? I ask not because I am lazy, but because I want to take the time to put out quality work if it is necessary, but if there is no incentive, then I will write something rough to submit August 1st and then for my other applications (A&M is my safety school) take a lot of time to ensure quality work.

essays are used for Scholarships. If you want to be a contender for a scholarship, then I would do your best on all three essays.

I have a M+C of 1300. So that makes me an automatic admit? I am around the top 5% as well and an SAT composite of 1950. Do i have to worry too much about A&M admission?

No, but still for choice of majors, dorms, etc. you should go on and apply fairly soon, unless you’re still really considering another school as your #1 choice.

its a 50/50 for UT Austin and A&M. I’ll just see which one offers me a better financial aid package. Maybe ill apply for Rice as well after I retake SATs in October.

If A&M is my safety school, then, I should still apply pretty soon, right? I have all the stuff together except for my school’s transcript (the admin office isn’t open yet), but I have two essays ready and all the other info necessary.
