When's the deadline for declaring a major?

and what's the consequence if you don't declare the major until the deadline?

I’m not sure if there is a “deadline.” I can only speak for engineering but what my advisor told me is you do not have to declare what type of engineering you are going into until you basically graduate. So let’s say you want to be a ME, you can take all the classes whenever you want and then “declare” probably late Jr year or Sr year. The only exception is some classes have a the requirement that you have declared for that major already.

i see, thanks

My D is declaring her major 2nd semester, junior year (next semester); although she’s known what she was majoring in before she even came here as a freshman. She said the advisers discouraged her from declaring it before then. Not sure why.

Tentai, from your posts it sounds like your uncertain about which career path to follow. Although she’s continued with the same major she always knew she was interested in, it seems like every week my D will call thinking of changing her major…mostly because she has a very wide range of interests and friends studying other subjects. I wonder if what you and my D are going through has to do with having so many choices and interests, at a time in your academic life that you need to commit to major.

My D has been reaching out to some of the professors she knows and discussing her options with them. You may want to try this with one or two of the ones you’re either taking classes with now or that you have enjoyed their class in the past. She’s found they are very receptive to taking the time to give advice and have some good ideas based on their knowledge of her as a student. You may also want to meet with someone in the career center or one of the LSA advisers…though my D has had mixed success with those sources. Maybe if you meet with one that’s not helpful, try to make an appointment with another adviser.

^ Thank you for the suggestion.
