On another thread, I asked where do the girlfriends stay when they come to KP for dances like the ball in December? I know kids under 21 can't check-in hotels here in VA and assume that's the way it is in NY, too.

The only response to my question on the other thread was: "Where do the girlfriends stay? Only (at a hotel) where the concierge answers to "Mother Superior."

A convent? Is there one on Long Island?

Seriously, when the young ladies fly in for dances, where do they stay? Is there a guest house on campus? Hampden-Sydney has had one. Please tell me where 18-20 year old girls/boys would stay once arriving KP for a dance/week-end.

I apologize RichVaMom. You asked a serious question, and I may have derailed helpful discussion. Very sorry.

There are so many knowledgeable parents and mids here, I hope you can give RVM good advice.

The only thing I know was that we were at the Andrew, and the concierge said the Mid we'd spoken with earlier "had just gotten back from sea, and just went upstairs with his girlfriend for a few minutes. I'm sure he'll be right back down."

He wasn't. :o . . . . Where there's a will.....

So, I think your asking for a better solution. OK folks, please help her out. And I won't get this one off track w/humor.

zonker, no apologies neccessary! Son and girlfriend just graduated from Catholic high schools, his and hers, so the "Mother Superior" at the concierge is acceptable. It's only that I had the impression you were kidding. We called several hotels for our son to check-in and visit friends at Camp Sea Gull in NC(where he'd been a camper/counselor for 10+years) before INDOC. Not one hotel would give him a room, as he's under 21. If not the convent, WHERE do the girls stay? Is The Andrew willing to check-in without ID? That's all I need to know.

My son stayed at the Inn at Great Neck on his own as a minor. I made the arrangements and paid for it via credit card and he just checked himself in. They didn't have a problem with it at all. In fact, they shared with me that it was quite common.
As we are in Las Vegas and my son's love interest will be a high school senior next year, I don't foresee having to deal with this just yet.

My son's girlfriend has stayed at the same hotels listed on the USMMA Parents web page. He or we have made reservation. Age has not been an issue. Ask for USMMA discount. She takes taxi back and forth to campus, as well as to and from airport, and LIRR to NYC.

me and my girl friend stayed at the navy lodge on staten island one of the weekends she flew out.... also if your son shows the front desk a military ID any good american will bend the rules...

I think many of your Plebes will find that New York LOVES the military in uniform and many rules may be bent in their favor in the next upcoming year.
Heard a story about a Mets fan who wanted to buy every Plebe a beer last year -- of course, they had to decline as they were underage!

Anchor Inn also waives the "must be over 21" rule. Know this from the Xmas ball last year. Son ended up sick as a dog with a virus that was sending Mids to the hospital & spent his time there in a semi-coma with a wet wash cloth over his eyes. Mom's will understand my glee. :D

Hmmm. I remember a part of college where I, ummmm a 'friend' of mine, ended up sick as a dog and was semi-comatose with a wet wash cloth over his eyes. I, ummm HE, didn't feel better until the day after the room stopped spinning.

Just never thought of calling it a 'virus'. :D

^^^ That got a giggle. I knew somebody just like that once! Many many many years ago.... LOL

I wouldha had to go up there & beat my Mid if that had been the case but they really did take about 100 kids to the ER that week-end. The EMT kids said they were working in 12 hour shifts. It wasn't pretty. Perhaps thats why the old girlfriend is no longer. The new girl friend is pre-med so maybe she'll be of more help should it happen next time. :D

That's a nasty virus. I just returned tonight from a Church Youth retreat in Atlanta, and I spent 2 nights at the hospital with 4 kids in our group who got extremely sick with a stomach virus! Nasty thing!

ha I had that virus...it sucked and it hit me right before the ball, one of my worst hospital experiences ever. Tip on the military ID, get your candidate to schedule ASAP! After the guy who does the ID's gets started on appointments the line gets really long. I was one of the first to get mine, but others waited as long as after christman break.

Thanks for tip about getting the military ID early! It could come in handy! Also, in my day, the virus of which you all are speaking of was known as "the cocktail flu." Is it the same one???

Haven't heard of that one. They said this one could have been the Norwalk virus. Wow, those kids were sick. I did hear the final # was about 100 of them that ended up with some kind of medical care. One of the Mids said they'd come on the loud speaker about every hour making an announcement to wash your hands.

Here's the thread about it when it was going on:

Remember that from last year. My son wanted to go for his "visit" during the outbreak,,but admis said no because of it. The kids on my church trip last week had the Norwalk too, after all was said and done we had about 6 sick out of 20. Of course we used gallons of purell!

whenever i come out from Cali to see my boyfriend i usually stay with my aunt in brooklyn or his sponsor parents open their home up for us.

when i flew out for june ball, there were other girls who were coming and were talking about sharing a room.

ps- you can get a hotel if your under 21 as long as you have the money and an ID

the Pennsylvania Hotel is a little expensive per night but right across the street from the subway so you dont have to pay tons of money for taxis and its super convenient to take the subway to the academy from the city.

Are the Plebe Candidates included in this dance? My son knows nothing about it. I've been bugging him to invite someone so that we can make hotel reservations. Where is it held? Is it a dinner/dance? Does the entire school attend? Is it a popular affair? Please bring me up to speed. Thank you.

Last year Christmas Ball was mandatory for all plebes to attend. it is held in Delano, and the plebes will all help decorate for it that day before the dance. it's just a dance, no real dinner. they have sodas and snacks however. most of the regiment attends for a little while at least. afterwards everyone is given liberty for the night.
