Hey im an international student aiming for a Big 10 university, i know northwestern and umich are the ones at the top academically speaking but between penn state, purdue, indiana, ohio which is better?
im considering majoring in business
Please help

Penn State has a lot going on academically and socially. There are significant international Asian communities there. The winters are rough but all the winters are rough in the Big Ten, except maybe in the newcomer, UMaryland, which will be challenging the best Big Ten teams pretty soon.

"…UMaryland, which will be challenging the best Big Ten teams pretty soon."…and losing…

Seriously, for business Indiana/Kelley is the best. However overall academically, tOSU and PSU are a bit stronger but not significantly better than IU and Purdue.

so for business iu would be the best choice?
how about internships and job placement because i think its kind of in the middle of nowhere

Bloomington is much closer to a decent sized city, Indianapolis, than State College. That school is in the middle of nowhere!

Seriously dont go to Maryland or Rutgers they wont be competitive for years… I would suggest PSU

compared to what, Penn State? PSU students go to Pittsburgh, NYC, and Philly for their internships, but PSU itself is a small town with some tech development nearby but not much. Penn State has good job placement and recruitment. I don’t know about the other schools.

not in soccer and lacrosse and field hockey and women’s basketball, rjk.

My comment was referring to a school being situated in a remote location. I didn’t mean to infer that PsU was worse for recruitment, just that its location is much farther from a major urban area than IU. There are plenty of other non revenue sports that B1G teams are excellent in but frankly, men’s bb and fb are the name of the game in college. If you aren’t strong in either, who cares about the rest that much?

Apparently Penn State is ranked first for recruitment and its alumni network is one of the strongest in the country. Academically, it’s definitely strong, with a high graduation rate. For business specifically, Kelley is definitely better than Smeal but it’s very hard to get into. Overall (outside Kelley), tOSu is in between Penn State and Indiana academically. Purdue is strong for engineering.
I would suggest you hedge your best and apply to Indiana Kelley, Penn State, and either Maryland or tOSu.
(jkeil and rjkofnovi are talking about sports, especially football and basketball, which matter to some American applicants whereas most international students find the idea of attending a university because of its football team rather puzzling.)

I’m not rising to any more sports bait. MYOS’ advice is solid. These are all good schools with strengths in engineering and business. A student could do well in any of them if she works hard and is self-supportive.

You can just go on US News and pull the individual rankings:

Someone did this in 2013. A year old but pretty much the same:
Here is a run down from 2013:
http://collegespun.com/national/which-of-the-5-major-athletics-conferences-has-the-best-schools-academically

Isn’t Wisconsin in the Big 10? That would be the next best school.

^^^^True, but wasn’t mentioned by the OP.

Thanks, i know kelley is a great buisiness school but its hard to get into, and then i would have to chose another mayor which is not an option for me do any of you know how hard is to get into kelley after your freshman year? I have a strong GPA (3.7) but my test scores werent great (1700) so i think being a direct admin is not an option. As for PSU compared to OSU in business which is better, academically and for internships and placement? I know osu is in a mayor city but psu has a great network so i wouldnt know…

Kelley business school at IU is strong, but if you can’t do direct admit (3.7 GPA in HS and 1270 SAT (CR and M) getting in is tricky. There are number of IU classes you must take, and even one B- torpedoes your chances. Then what?? So not a great option without direct admit. Not worth the chance in my opinion unless you otherwise want to be in Indiana…
