Which is better: Rochester or Syracuse?

Three questions:

Which one is the better all-around school?

which is better for a business major?

Which is easier to get into?

Thanks for any help.

Syracuse is a better “all-around” school with a very nice campus, quality academics, DI sports and school spirit. Syracuse is easier to get into. The SATs at Syracuse are about 50 points below Rochester. Rochester is somewhat better academically and is more selective. The Rochester campus is not as nice as Syracuse.

Syracuse is probably better for a business major with a new Business building. The business program at Rochester might be graduate only, not sure.

collegehelp is correct, Rochester does not offer a business major. However, they do have a Business Economics major and a 3+2 Bachelors/MBA program, if that’s something you might be interested in.

Just a correction to collegehelps comment, “The SATs at Syracuse are about 50 points below Rochester.” This statement is not true. On the 1600 point scale, the middle 50% for Syracuse is 1070 to 1270, centered on 1170, while for Rochester it is 1220 to 1430, centered on 1325. At the center, that is a 155 point difference! On the 2400 point scale, the difference widens with UR topping Syracuse by 220 points! These differences may materially impact the answer to question 3. I just want to set the record straight, because I see a lot of inaccuracy like this on these boards when the stats are readily available through a number of sources. Now depending on your interests, Syracuse has highly acclaimed programs in a number of areas, so don’t let this silly digression dissuade you from looking closer at the schools. I recommended to my D that she place Syracuse on the short list. I thinks there’s a great deal there that she would find quite exciting!

Though both are fine schools, Rochester generally has a better academic reputation and more intellectual student body. It’s harder to get into as well.

I’m not being biased or anything but Rochester is too boring. A boring town/ and or student body may impact the level of motivation and passion among the student body. While Rochester’s stats may be higher, I’d say depending on what program you enroll in, Syracuse may be a much better option for you.

Apples and oranges, IMO…the only think these two school have in common is “wonderful weather”…hehehe

Rochester is “better” academically meaning it is harder to get into and has a more intellectual student body, however you may define that. However, Syracuse has the better business program and is definitely better socially. Rochester is more well known for the sciences.

I would say Syracuse for their business program

D1 football and basketball are HUGE at Syracuse, while UR has more of a nerdy vibe.

Again, it depends what you’re looking for.
