I can't figure out which one to get. My mom wants to get unlimited because she's paranoid I won't eat, but it's so expensive. Also, anyone know when we have to sign up by? Probably not for awhile, since we don't even have room assignments yet.

I am getting the 10 meals per week plan because I figure that I will not always want to eat at the dining halls.

I suggest 150 block or 10 meals, but I like 150 more.

What is the 150 block plan?

With the 150 Block Membership, a student has the choice of eating at either of our 2 residential dining centers, Gator Corner Dining Center or the Fresh Food Company. Over the course of a typical seventeen week semester, you may eat a total of 150 meals during the semester. You choose when and how much you want to eat each day. That’s the convenience of the 150 Block Membership!

With this membership, you also receive $300.00 in Flex Bucks, per semester, to use at any on campus dining location including all of our national brands such as Wendy’s, Subway, Einstein Bros. Bagels and more.

The 10 Meal Membership (Fall) offers 10 meals per week at either Gator Corner Dining Center or the Fresh Food Company.

The Traditional 10 Meal Membership, comes with $200 in Flex Bucks.

The thing I'm a little confused about, is what constitutes a meal? If I can have, say, 2 meals a day, does that mean I have can get 1 grain, 2 fruits, 1 beverage, etc...or is it just whatever you can grab while you're there?

A meal is whatever you can grab/eat once you are in there. Also a take home box is one meal (whatever you can fit in there).

19 and unlimited wont be used. 15 I still think is still stretching it.

By the way, how is the food at the dining halls?

i'm getting unlimited because i literally inhale food

Ill prolly get unlimited for the summer and see how much i eat then get the one for fall accordingly.

how are the cooking facilities in the dorms?

I don't know how good the cooking facilites are, but the food is quite good. They have a lot of stuff to choose from.

Unlimited is not necessary. The people I know who had that plan ended up eating 14 meals a week (these are big guys too), so even 15 meals a week is a stretch.

Don't go unlimited. My roommate did this in the fall and while it was great for me because I could take his ID and get free food whenever I wanted, by then end of the semester he never wanted to eat there again.. and didn't. If you really want a meal plan I'd go w/ a smaller one like others are suggesting. Personally I didn't get a meal plan, and neither did most of the people I knew. It's pretty expensive and your probably better off getting a smaller size fridge and going to the grocery store.

On the food quality: The first week you're going to think its great. After that you are going to get very very tired of the same food, and pretty much throw up in mouth at the mere thought of Gator Dining. Everyone's different of course, but this is what it was like for me.

Cooking facilities in the dorms: depends on the hall. Check UFs website, it's pretty accurate as far as this goes. Traditional halls have a single lounge per floor where there's an oven, stove, sink etc.

My daughter did the declining balance thing (instead of a meal plan). When she wanted to eat in Fresh Food or Gator Corner (the dining halls) or any on campus eatery (subway, wendy's, noodle place, starbucks, little hall's deli, beatty market) she would just swipe her gator one card and it worked as a debit account. The meals in the dining hall cost $7.43 each this way but the declining balance never expires (it carries over for all 4 years of college) so she dosen't waste any money. We put $1000 in this account last August and ...she still has about $200 left. She had a waist high refridgerator in her dorm room which she kept stocked with milk, yogurt and fruit. Most days she ate breakfast (cereal/milk) in her dorm room and had lunch on the go. You can monitor the account balance online and add to it at any time ( via credit card).

How does your daughter get food for her fridge? When I attended ('82 grad), there were several guys on my dorm floor who had cars, so hitching a ride to Albertsons never seemed to be a problem. But I'm reluctant to send a car up with my daughter in the fall. Is there a store on campus or bus service?

FLBoy, I would not send a car with you daughter. Its not needed. There are bus route that pass by the supermarket but hardly anyone uses it for those purposes unless they absolutely need to. I would recommend that they try hard to make friends early with someone with a car. Maybe she will be lucky enough to have a roommate who has a car already.

...and again I recommend 10 meal plan or 150 block. Usually I don't recommend declining balance unless you live off campus or you mostly eat at place other than the dining halls.
