Which schools ask for a photograph?

I know UPenn, Brown and Columbia do...but which others?

Would it hurt you not to send one in? And do they actually JUDGE you based on looks? Haha I find this kind of funny actually...but I guess it makes sense, they asked for one on my Exeter application.

What kind of photo does it need to be? A formal school one?

Schools still ask for photographs! How archaic!

Uh let's see, out of the schools I applied to Penn asked for a photo (but you've already mentioned that).... oh and Vassar did too! I think Swarthmore might have as well, but I don't remember that as clearly....

And no, not sending in a picture doesn't hurt your chances... or at least, it certainly didn't hurt mine at Vassar. Nor will it affect your application if you're particularly ugly or attractive--the whole point according to an admissions officer I asked about this at Vassar is so that they can "match a face to an application" and see if they recognize you from an interview or information session.

Theyre totally checking to see if you're hot enough to go to their school...who wants to be surrounded by a bunch of ugly people?

I remember Georgetown did when I was applying.

"Theyre totally checking to see if you're hot enough to go to their school...who wants to be surrounded by a bunch of ugly people?"

yep you nailed it. that's why i'm in.

no, seriously. trust me that is not why they ask for a photo because the "majority" of the people here are nothing close to hot.

"so that they can "match a face to an application" and see if they recognize you from an interview or information session."

this is what i was told at an info session when i applied. i'm guessing this is what it's for. but heck i'm sure it wouldn't hurt to be beautiful or have a radiant smile with a 2400.

I know in the old days it was to see what ethnic background or race the applicant was. Ivy league schools did not want anyone who did not fit in (eg. Jewish). It could be used now to limit students of certain ethnic backgrounds although the admissions offiices would deny this.

^ But they also ask for your ethnicity, don't they? And if you decline to mention your ethnicity, you could just as well skip the picture.

Yes, because as we all know, Jews have clearly visible horns.

Lmao! :d

So. Do you guys think hot people get any special advantages? ;)

Do they give the photo back to you if they don't like the pic?!?

Yes and yes.

You're being naive if you think that your looks won't affect your admission. Admissions people are humans too!

Okay for most people it won't make much of a difference, but I expect they'll take it into consideration if you're morbidly obese for example.

Also I think that "so that they can "match a face to an application" and see if they recognize you from an interview or information session." is a really lame excuse. Maybe I'm missing something here, but...

Don't kids who visit their info sessions register when they're there?

Don't they take have their notes on the interview out in front of them when they're considering applications?

No, I'm sure looks are a factor, albeit a small one. A normal school picture should be okay though right?

Send in a picture where you look clean cut.

The point of the picture is yeah to match a face to an application but its also to see what type of person you are. If you have a bunch of tat's across your face or something like that, it could negatively effect your app. It's not surprising though. My counselor told us to be very careful wiht what we put online esp on facebook and myspace. College's have reps checking on kids and if you have a facebook/myspace pics with you drinking alcohol or doing something sketchy or having threatening ideas on your blog or profile area, it will hurt you.
