I looked at that ranking – Purdue 87, Dartmouth 90, Emory 127, Georgetown 155, Tufts 157

ummmmmm, I don’t think so. But that’s the problem with rankings, you get anomolies.

I’m not saying that Purdue isn’t a great school, but most in the US wouldn’t put it in the same class as any of those others schools.

Michigan’s a world class institution – once you say that, to get into whether it’s three places ahead of this school or two places behind that is kind of silly.

rankings are extremely personal. and honestly all we can compare is selectivity. I would think in general Mich admissions are not as competitive as Northwestern or USC. But that’s just my school, here kids with lower GPAs and SATs have gotten in. Selectivity is definitely the worst way to label one college as better than the other. The best thing is to visit every school you fit admissions profiles for and construct rankings based on your impressions.

Okay fine–ARWU rankings- Cornell 12, Michigan 22, Northwestern 29, Duke 35. Either way these other schools are not “better than” Michigan. And Michigan has something that all these other schools don’t–A big time sports program across the board and a public school atmosphere.

And by the way, maybe those schools aren’t all that their cracked up to be by USNWR. The ARWU rankings has them all also very low- Purdue 69, Dartmouth 151-200, Emory 101-150, Georgetown 301-400 (they’re obviously not a huge fan), and Tufts 101-150. There is a huge and probably unwarranted emphasis placed on high selectivity private schools in this country. USNWR is their little pawn with all the “peer evaluation scores” and huge emphasis on admissions rate.

errybody needs to chill…nobody is guaranteed admission to any school…congrats, you got into ivies, and i hope you get into umich too, but seriously chill. youll find out eventually…
