Candidate 2 by a fairly decent margin.
That science award is pretty hefty.
NYLF isn’t that special at all, anyone who pays up can get in.

Candidate 1 has many time-light EC’s (5 hours of tutoring a month isn’t all that impressive).
Candidate 2’s ECs are far more focused, thus I’d say he/she has a better chance

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/759277-chance-me-i-need-essay-ideas-ucs-hyps.html</a></p>

bump. Awesome Thread

Neither candidate has a good chance at those schools. If i have to pick one, then candidate 1.

please bump

It’d be nice if you guys tell us what major you guys are applying into and the ethnic background of both, but IMO with what you guys shared…

candidate 2 wins by a slight margin, although I give you both low to med. chances of any of the above, depending on the major you’re applying to.

1 has the better standardized test scores, but 2, even though he/she bombed the sat 2’s, makes up for it in awards, and course rigidity. And to candidate 1: don’t put that you only worked June 08 to Dec 08; sorta gives the impression of lack of determination and consistency. In your actual apps, it will come down to the essays to say who will get in for sure.

A suggestion to both, get some more athletic awards or more participation. Good luck to both!

“even though he/she bombed the sat 2’s”

Do you live in a bubble?

me .

@ Akrana: what do you mean if I live in a bubble? 650 on sat 2 chemistry is a… well… yea. So what you getting at?

submitting the SATII when you dont have atleast a 700 calls for the LULZ.

Agree on smilemyonly.
I’d pick the second guy because of his ECs.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/759596-chance-typical-yet-unique-asian-will-chance-back-thx.html</a>
thx

candidate 2 has really good ECs
but for IVY leagues, standardized test scores are of great importance
2340 is good, then it depends on the essays
cand.2 2080 is not decent, still it is hard to say(cuz AOs of those colleges ARE hard to predict)

and this is a nice chance thread
chance me back
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/760155-chance-me-lacs-rice.html</a></p>

Candidate 2 IMO has a good shot at those colleges. What is your point, that race helps?

So I am candidate 2 and I forgot to mention that I am a national hispanic scholar. This tells you that I am hispanic, however, candidate 1 is Asian. Please reconsider our chances by knowing this. Finally, if you could please predict my chances if I take the ACT and get a 32+ and take the physics subject test and get a 750+. Will that assure me entrance into these?
Thanks

it will not “assure”, but you certainly have a high chance of getting into thoes top colleges. good job :)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/759596-chance-typical-yet-unique-asian-will-chance-back-thx.html</a></p>

this would increase the possibility of your entrance, of course
BTW how does the difference between hispanic and asian candidates matter?

as an asian, the competition is 10X more intense
as a hispanic, the competition becomes baby-level

bump plz!!!

please bump

@ waitatshu

Where in the world did you pull out that number? Even as a jest, you can’t quantify the intensity for ORM, and to more thoroughly answer CUCU’s question, the general culture of East Asian countries lean towards success towards education, which is where the stereotypes of hard-working Asians originate.

In addition, you have to consider the demographics. Abotu 4% of the US population is of Asian decent, but Asians represent 18.5% of students in college campuses. See the disproportionality?

I can’t say for other the races, but underrepresented minorities, such as Africans and Hispanics, are favored within selective institutions for the sake of “diversity,” called affirmative action. Denying/admitting candidates based on their race is within the moral gray area, and is hotly disputed among education officials, and of course, College Confidential.
