My composite SAT score is 2080, and I received a likely letter. Don’t worry about scores!

2000 isn’t a low score. Have some perspective.

It’s all relative.

I know it’s all relative but we need better language.

We sometimes sound like 1 percenters Acting like the sky is falling because the caviar has run out.

A friend of mine claimed that a URM girl from his school got into Penn with an 80% average (2.5ish ?) and a 1980 SAT. I guess the process really is holistic.

i know someone who got in with a 1710 SAT score

I should’ve applied then. lol. I have a 3.7 and 1910 with a ton of impressive ECs and I’m a good writer too so my essays would’ve been great. But I was too scared to apply I applies only to Dartmouth, brown and Princeton.

*applied
Stupid iPhone lol

is it possible to get into wharton without an sat 2 math score? i have a 34 composite ACT score and got a 35 on the math section. I have taken subject tests, but not the math 2 one… is there hope?

There’s always hope, but Wharton highly recommends SAT2 Math 2. Sounds like you’re comfortable with math, so can ask why you didn’t take it? Did you take Math 1 and not do well on it (said you didn’t take Math 2)?

Also, following the original thread of "how low an SAT did you get in with, it appears that UPenn’s 25th percentile admitted scored 2070 on SAT. I’m guessing there are some 1800+ change scores admitted, but they probably have significant hooks…things like some combination of college caliber athlete, URM, legacy, first gen. Here’s last year’s incoming class profile for 25th to 75th percentile admitted + attending:

Testing Means for the Middle 50 Percent of Enrolled Students
(25th-75th percentiles)

TEST RANGE
SAT: Critical Reading 680-770
SAT: Math 700-790
SAT: Writing 690-790
ACT Composite 31-34

My daughter got in with an ACT composite of a 30. She was real worried because she didn’t get the 31 (she would have felt better with it). Overall I think the essays and ECs are what does the trick.

@FIVEtrain I have the same scores and I really want to get into UPENN! Was there anything else about your application that helped you stand out?

I’m sick of people saying that you can’t get into Penn with under a 2000 unless you have some kind of hook, like a “college caliber athlete, URM, legacy, first gen.” FALSE. FALSE. FALSE. FALSE.
There are so many factors now that influence SAT scores, it’s unreal. Not everyone can afford SAT test preps and not all high schools even offer SAT prep classes or even just SAT help in general. Not saying that this is an excuse to do poorly but it does matter.
I know absolutely brilliant people here who had SAT scores below 2000. SATs aren’t everything.

Frankly, almost every single brilliant or even highly intelligent person I have known has an SAT score of over 2000. The exceptions are often internationals/recent immigrants.

I don’t know why people are so unwilling to accept reality. If one has a low GPA, no one questions that chances tend to go down. In the same way, SATs lower than the 25th percentile just don’t help your case. No person on college confidential says that SATs are EVERYTHING, but the reality is that there is an overwhelming reason to accept someone with numbers well below average in all cases; it likely isn’t on a whim. Often times, that reason is athlete, URM, legacy (legacies are highly qualified usually, not sure why they get flack out of all the special interest groups), first gen, but sometimes it can just be extreme excellence in one or multiple areas.

Hello guys, I am new here :S I dont know if this is the right thread to post this but I am an International Student from Thailand, did the IB Diploma with a total score of 38. 7 in HL chem. 6 in HL Physics, and 6 in HL Business & Management, 6 in Spanish Abinitio, 5 in SL English A1 Lit and lastly, 7 in Math SL. My SAT are really bad 1890 in total with a terrible 580 in writing. Though my TOEFL ibt is 114. I wish to apply to UPENN for a major in Chemistry. Any one can give their opinion on if I have any chances to get accepted? Will really help :s Thanks…

Two of the hardest working people I know at Penn got a 1600+ and 1700+ on the SAT and they are EXCELLING academically.

I know another person who got a 1800+ but is quite the opposite.

I also didn’t achieve within what Penn “typically” looks for (submitted a 30 or 31 on the ACT, which I don’t think is a bad score by any means btw) and was accepted

I agree with justamess. It really depends on your character. Your scores are very important but are not the most important factor.

However, you are an international student so I’m not sure what’s Penn’s policy towards them because they generally hold them to a higher standard, especially if you’re asking for FA.

There’s always hope. Penn can sometimes be very forgiving and see that there is a lot more to a student than their SAT or ACT scores indicate. My highest SAT was 2050, and my lowest was around 1830. My subject tests were that fantastic either: 700 in US History, 620 in Literature (I think), and 600 in M. Biology. I never took the ACT, mainly because by the time I found out about it I was too late to sign up. I’m also not an underrepresented minority or someone who took missionary trips to Africa.

However, I’m a member of the Penn Class of 2017. I was a teenage run-away from a working class family, and I was the first person admitted from my high school in a long time (beside the state winning football player). I wrote good essays, gave a good interview, and was just really passionate about education. I guess Penn saw something in my application and gave me a chance. You never know what’ll happen till you take the chance.

If you are a collegiate level athlete, the better you are, the more forgiving they are. My friends son just got into Cornell with a SAT that did not break 1600. He was courted by another IVY too. GPA was 3.8 plus and I doubt he passed any of his AP tests. He turned down a full ride to another east coast school to attend.

@Elouie I have the same scores for both the SAT & ACT, how well did you do on your subjects tests?
And were you involved in many ec’s?
