They HAVE to limit the Playwriting major to 2 per class year because of the production requirements…each student produces 3 or 4 of their plays throughout their time at Fordham. These practical, hands on and collaborative experiences are without a doubt the best part of the program! But next year there will be no Seniors, 2 Juniors and 1 Sophomore (still room to select another student from the class) so I guess it’s possible that they would take more in the Class of 2016 but not really that likely because it would be a burden on future classes. I would guess that at most there is one spot left OR deferral from the major and a decision made in the Fall if the student decides to attend anyway. The Playwriting seminars don’t actually begin until the Spring semester for Freshman. I know that yield does have some bearing on acceptances of Performance students but I honestly don’t think that is the case for Playwriting.

You obviously liked NYU and so I think that Fordham would likely be a good fit for you, too, although different in many ways…for the better, if you ask me! But Fordham and NYU cost about the same, in fact, when my S was deciding between the two schools, Fordham LC was actually slightly higher due to housing costs.

@glassharmonica, Livysdad, et al

I am SO SO happy for all of you and really hope that you strongly consider Fordham! There are several different departments working on your kid’s admissions right now so unfortunately you still have to be patient. No mention of a merit scholarship in the Theatre acceptance does not at all mean that it is not coming. And mention of a Dean’s scholarship, for example, which is $10k doesn’t mean that couldn’t go up. Certainly by April 1 you will all know how much it will cost to attend. If you can, I highly recommend attending the Spring Preview where you will have the opportunity to speak with a FA counselor who can go over your package personally with you and also the various ways to pay. Best of luck to you all! Welcome to the Fordham family! :)

The housing cost differential between FCLC and NYU is illusory, imho. NYU Freshman dorms are less expensive than many of the upper class dorms. FCLC is the same. The other issue is that NYU actually leases some of its dorms. When those leases expire, it is not clear what will happen.

Good news from Mississippi! My son is accepted to the Theatre Program, Performance track! It came in a large envelope complete with Financial Aid package. He also got a small Theatre Scholarship which we were not expecting and for which we are so grateful! He was also offered University housing. He absolutely LOVED the campus and the students he met, and is ready to send (correction: ready for ME to send) the deposit today!

Congradulations Magnolia mom. Also my understanding is that any student offered housing has housing guaranteed for 4 years. Have you seen the FCLC dorms – they ar every nice.

Thank you, kayf. Yes, we toured them in January. We were impressed as well. And, yes, the letter we received today mentioned that he would be guaranteed housing for all four years. Thank goodness!

@Dan if you visit the Theater/drama major threads there is one that is about Fordham Playwrites and I think there are two others that were also just accepted to the Fordham program.

I hope to god they’re considering accepting two playwrights excluding drama94, because I’m sort of in love with the program. Who knows, I probably didn’t make the cut but a guy can dream.

First, congrats to DanT! I truly hope that you can afford to come to Fordham for Playwriting bc it is an outstanding program! Are you coming to visit?

Second, rpraderio. So yes, there are two acceptances to the Playwriting Class of 2016…drama94 (glassharmonica’s D) and DanT. But I wouldn’t stop hoping for an acceptance to the Playwriting program at this point unless you get a rejection letter. When I said I didn’t think they would accept more than 2, I was basing my info off prior years admissions (accepted 0 for 2013; deferred 1 for 2014 then accepted 1 in the Fall, 1 in the Spring; accepted 1 for 2015) and the department’s blurb in my S’s playbill for his last production which went up this past President’s Day weekend and does state that at present the Playwriting program is capped at eight. But like I said there won’t be any Seniors in the program next year so maybe the Class of 2016 just has really strong writers and they will take more than 2 bc there will be some room next year. I didn’t hear from Matthew, Eva or Daniel specifically that they wouldn’t take more than 2 this year and perhaps they are making other changes to the program bc they are starting a Playwriting MFA. So keep praying!

Congrats also to MagnoliaMT’s S and welcome to the Fordham Theatre family! :)

SandKmom, I didn’t know they were starting an MFA program. That is exciting. Will the undergraduate playwrights have any interaction with the BFA playwrights (or, how will the MFA program impact the BFA program, in terms of opportunities and workshopping.)

rpraderio, good luck! We are rooting for you.

Daniel did tell me they’re starting the MFA program and that all undergraduates are only permitted three productions of their work instead of four now. Perhaps this means they can bring in more students. Also, when talking to the general admissions representative she claimed he is trying to “build up the program.” Ahh, I just wanna know, either way.

Also, Fordham requested some additional financial aid info from me on friday, some sort of document that further states how much money I had earned at my part time jobs. I’m assuming if they’re trying to build a fin. Aid package for me I’m still being considered, but possibly just for the university and not playwriting. Any thoughts?

rpraderio, when you auditioned, did you check the box that indicated that you still wanted to be considered for admission, even if you were not accepted to the playwright program?

i agree the call from Financial Aid is a good sign; we also got a call about a week before my daughter’s acceptance, and a letter asking for more information.

Growing the program sounds wonderful, even if it means one less production. I think my daughter will want to go back and meet with them, if they allow it, and sit in on a workshop, if it is permissible. Now we are anxiously awaiting financial aid information.

Yes, they are offering a MFA but last time we spoke about it my S said they didn’t have any applicants for September…probably bc not many people know about it yet. No word on how it will impact the undergrad program yet. It’s BA btw, not BFA!

@rpraderio

I had also heard that they were limiting the number of productions to 3 instead of 4. My S was offered a choice bc when he came in the requirement was 4 but the scheduling is very difficult for a double major (he’s also in Performance) so they are leaving it up to him. He does plan to complete 4 since he has already completed 2 productions this year as a Sophomore…he will do one as a Junior and one as a Senior and hopefully appear on stage in other productions. As a double major, he is currently rehearsing for his first performance at Fordham due to conflicting rehearsals with his Playwriting production time slots.

I think that being contacted by FA is definitely a good sign of admission to the university. And I don’t know what the admissions rep meant when she said “build up the Playwriting program” but perhaps they will accept more applicants into the major this year! When my S was a freshman, there was actually talk of discontinuing the undergraduate program altogether after he graduated in 2014 to focus on the MFA but then they accepted a student last year and now two this year already so they did change their mind on that one! It’s just as feasible that they could change their mind about capping the program at 8 especially if they are decreasing the number of productions. I wish you good luck! Hang in there!

I did check to be considered for admission to the university. Hopefully I’ll hear from them this week and we’ll know what’s really going on with the program
