Who's decision is it?

Who do you think should decide where the student goes to college? The student or the parent(s)?

Both. Collaborative efforts work best. That said, to the extent money is not a driver of the decision, I think the student's sensibilities deserve the greater consideration.

I second what FLVADAD said

Yeah...... for my sister, it was just her decision. Didn't really help the family dynamic that much.....

Within reason (financial and academic), it should be the student's decision, not the parents'. In other words, a student cannot chose a school that is beyond financial reach. Parents should not spend their retirement fund, other child's college savings or mortage to send their kid to school. Also, students should not expect the parents to approve of a school is clearly beneath the student's potential if they have to pay for it. Why should parents pay $100k over years for their children to attend schools that are far weaker to other schools that they got accept into, assuming the cost is roughly the same?

But if schools are of roughly equal quality and cost, and assuming safety is not an issue, students should make the final decision.

if it's about the $$, definitely the parents

It should be the student's decision but with parental approval for $$$. But I have read/heard so many parents meddled with their student's decision that is kind of sad. So many parents are so manupilative, some even went out of their way to prevent their students from selecting a certain school.
