Who's Who Among American High School Students?

I recently received an invitation in the mail for a book called “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” Since it was free, and harmless, I applied.

But does this publication hold any weight with colleges, or is it just a bunch of fodder? Have any of you even heard of it? I was just wondering how highly recognized “Who’s Who” is, because I know I can’t trust their website for information!

It's a scam.

basically yes, no one at all cares about it. it's totally worthless. it's a ploy to get you to buy their fancy book. i probably wouldn't even write it in an app. would anyone here?

ooh ooh!!!! I got somethign in the mail from Who's Who!!! I was SOOOO EXCITED! I bought EVERYTHING they had to offer, and it was the number one thing that I always mentioned on every job interview and college app!!!

...NOT!!!

I do keep getting these calls saying "Buy a book, Buy a book!" but I didn't. Hmm. I'll have to ask my counselor.

BTTTTTTTTTTTTTT collegehereicome

stupid question coming up:

what does BTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT mean?

no not stupid, in fact most people i've met on the net don't get it. I've seen it used on many forums as a way to express laughter, like a kind of spitting out your coffee kind of sound. I enjoy it much more than the impersonal lol, rofl, lmao, and such. Just make the btttt sound with your mouth, you will see what i mean. Maybe I am just stupid though, cuz a lot of people get really annoyed by it.

Traverse City is a beautiful city - I have a cottage on Lake Leelanau

(and so people don't ask, i'm posting to the poster who's from Traverse City, no i'm not insane and irrevelant)

It's a scam so students and their parents buy the books. Don't bother putting it on any applications, you will only get laughed at.

Thanks for the advice. How do people even get chosen for it, anyway? My friends and I all have the same GPA, classes, etc. but they didn't hear anything.

How does anyone get junk mail? You got on a list somewhere.

Joy, oh joy.

For my high school, the counselors nominated everyone with a certain GPA or perfect attendance.

Perfect attendance, the Cal Ripkin Award.

The other famous useless award is the National Honor Roll. These scams don't necessarily ask for money up front. Someone on CC tracked the National Honor Roll from their PO Box on Pennsylvania Ave in Washington DC to a marketing firm in NYC. They make their money by selling mailing lists compiled from information obtained from the honorees. I don't think it would hurt too badly to have it on your application, but it can not help for the adcoms to be rolling their eyes even briefly.

i used to think it was a scam, but one of my friend's sister actually sent in the money for the scholarship for who's who, and she actually got the scholarship.
