Why are there many more women than men?

So looking at NYU's 2010-2011 common data set, I noticed that NYU is comprised of 13411 women, and 8686 men. What is the reason behind such a large gap between the amount of men and women that attend this school? Are men at a disadvantage when applying?

Nope, it’s just that this school doesn’t offer an experience popular with many guys. Most guys going to college want the bro bro frat bro atmosphere, a campus, a quad, active Greeklife, sorority girls, sports (above all), and fun in general. NYU is pretty much the polar opposite of all that, and it’s also an exceptionally liberal institution so you get a lot of the empowered, prototypical Northeastern women who are very driven, intellectual, concerned about their careers, etc.

Plus, hipsters.

hipsters <3

I absolutely despise the “bro bro frat mentality.”

So boring…

^ it’s very prevalent here at IU. Ugh… So many frats.

Well, if you’re a straight guy and you come here, chances are, after awhile you’ll wish you had a bit of it in your life. I’m pretty anti-frat, I hate a lot of what they stand for and are known for, but you may get sick of the complete lack of testosterone at this school. It’s almost impossible to find another kid on Sunday night in December at 11:27pm excited and screaming over the dirty pick six someone just pulled in a playoff-berth-clinching game, or somebody you can go lift with, somebody who’ll wing for you whatever you’re doing.

A lot of the kids in frats here join them because they experience that lack, so they look for something to fill it. Greeklife here is very different from any other school I know, you have some frats who try way too hard (PIKE, where kids get lax pinnies and all of a sudden high school sports bench-riders are now the bros), some who are completely geeky, the Jewish frat, etc. etc.

The one downside of NYU…60/40 girl-guy ratio. :p
