Why do people dislike FSU so much?

So on collegetoolkit.com I did the whole "can I get in" college toll, You have to put your stats and what schools your hoping to get into. I put FSU because thats the only school I'm waiting on a decision from and from all the schools I applied to, FSU is my #1. Other people vote on your choice and if you can get in. And they also have the option of suggesting others colleges that they think might fit you. Alot of people put on my results other shools like Vanderbilt, Duke,Boston and comments like:
"With your scores and grades, why waste your time at a sports-obsessed diploma mill like FSU?"

Its not the first thing I heard that from people either, its annoying and sometimes when people ask me where I wanna go I just wanna stay shut.

They probably are a bunch of losers appying to top 25 schools that have no interests in sports. I personally want sports to be a part of the experience, Why would anyone wanna go to a school with no spirit?

yea the people who got into uf at my school act as if there gods....they think that fsu is where the stupid ppl go, Well then im stupid..

Hell I'm stupid too! I worked at a summer camp last summer and I walked in to the dining hall with a seminoles shirt on (way before I would even think about applying) and I walked in the dining hall and they were all looking at me all funny and the rest of the staff threaten to throw me into the lake lol it was fun and games but I dont see the big deal, If im stupid for being a seminole then I'm a big idiot.

You brought up a good topic, bbecker. I encounter the anti-FSU people every single day, living in south Florida. My FSU friends around the state encounter the same anti-FSU sentiment. None of us really know why that is, and we have discussed this topic at lenght. We don't believe it has much to do with academic reputation, since many of the anti-FSU folk graduated from schools with lower reputations. Some of them dind't even go to college at all. I think people trully know that FSU is a decent school, but refuse to admit it.
One of our theories is that people are tired of seing FSU in the national spotlight, from our great football run in the 80's and 90's. This is called the Notre Dame effect, who is also disliked by many in this country. USC is starting to see experience this too.
Another theory is that people have been influenced by the Gator lead media. UF has a journalism school and FSU does not. The media in this state, and around the country, is full of UF grads. This leads to the Florida media portraying FSU in a bad light, which has been the case for many years. Notice how many news papers seem to constantly have many negative stories about FSU, and not many on UF. For example, a front page story on our starting quaterback getting a parking ticket, or oversleeping for a test. I know this sounds like conspiracy theories or paranoia, but I think there's something to it. Even on this message boards, there seems to be an anti-fsu sentiment for some reason. To this day, I still don't know the real reason behind it. Maybe someone else can comment on this topic.

I don't know but its annoying, I was accepted to UF and I rather go to FSU and it not, looks like im going out of state. UF is overrated! And then the rest is ignorance, its like talking about how an orange taste but you never aten a orange before.

I too was accepted to UF, as did many of my friends who went to FSU. UF grads love to bring up the "UF reject" thing , but you can't let it get to you. It's all part of the rivalry. The funny thing is that many of us get that last laugh. Like in my case, since I have a few UF grads with my same education, working under me. Many of my Gator friends freely admit that they only say that kind of stuff to get under our (FSU) skin. Deep down, most of them don't believe that nonsense. Like I said, it's all part of the heated rivalry between UF and FSU.

I think some highly qualified students choose FSU over UF because of the additional scholarship money available and they prefer the atmosphere on the campus.

My older applied to UF regular decision, was accepted, then decided to go to Florida State, too. The myth that the UF folks put out is downright silly.

Younger daughter had even more impressive stats and flat out declined to tour UF, despite our urging to go and see for herself. Her grandfather received a master's from UF in the 1940s.

It's a myth that only people who get rejected from UF go to FSU. I think they (the UF kids) like to say that because they are currently enjoying better rankings than FSU. When I attended FSU in the 1970s FSU had the better academic reputation. In fact, for most of history FSU has had the better reputation. This has lead to some resentment for some in the so-called "gator nation".

If this occurred out of Florida, I'd say it is probably the Notre Dame effect.

UF rejects dont go to FSU, THe ones who apply and get accepted and realize that it was a mistake to even think about going to UF are the one who go to FSU :-).

My second son went to James Madison, the joke there was JMU meant just missed UVA.

I agree with a previous poster, at the end of the day it doesn't matter much in the overall scheme as both are good schools and offer different opportunites for everyone. Colleges basically deny people admission these days and no one is "Rejected".

Same here, I was accepted to UF and qualified for their honors program, but will attend FSU instead. Some people think UF is better just because of one ranking, but the rankings really don't matter. What matters is finding a solid college that you can enjoy, one that is a good fit for you personally. I was not impressed with UF when I visited there, they seemed cold and condescending; "If you get in here, you can... blah blah blah." Like they don't even want you to come there. I really liked the atmosphere of FSU, where they seemed accomplished without a chip on their shoulder. That is why I will be attending FSU in the fall, because I can see myself enjoying my time while being challenged academically without dealing with condescending elitists who think their school is second only to Harvard in academics.

well another thing that i find funny is that all the poeple who get accepted into UF from my high school are the smart jocks, and the arrogant snotty people. While FSU seems to accept the opposite, most of us who have been accepted are the smart, funny, nice ,people..this is probably a generalization but thats what i've seen.

It's true, I've mostly seen the snotty and stuck up to go UF. But what is the world coming to? now judging people who what school the choose to attend.

bbecker another thing I don't agree with, but I hear a lot from other Florida people is they are turned off by the campus. They think it is a small campus, too urban like, in a nothing town, dirty, old, congested, cold in the winter. I've probably missed a couple but those are some of the comments. Therefore, either due to a personal bias or a comparision to another campus in Florida they form a negative opinion and then aren't afraid to talk about it.

I think on most points they are dead wrong and clearly it isn't the right place for everyone especially if your looking for small school rural setting.

I would assert FSU's campus is the most beautiful in Florida. It's also the one of the smallest, and thus the most heavily traveled.

See it in the springtime. It's breathtaking. I especially enjoy the ride west on College Avenue from Monroe Street towards the main gate.

I actually think the biggest problem FSU has is how far it is from the rest of the state. Many South Florida parents want their kids away from home but not too far away. I actually think much of the campus is very pretty and easy to navigate, the Georgia-like weather and foliage is a welcome change from the heat and palm trees of the South and the opportunities presented by being near the seat of state government is a big plus.

^This is true.

I personally worked in the Capitol during a Legislative session. It was really interesting; hectic, but interesting.

but its location is also a plus in attracting some out of staters, and yes being located in the state capitol has helped some of its majors such as poli-sci etc, but not in terms of more money or extra help. Although that may change soon with hcarlie christ being governor and an FSU alumni.

The FSU campus is awesome. Granted, some parts in west campus could use a little help, but they are improving those areas. What some call old, I call historic. I've never been a big fan of the "new" campuses like UCF, FIU, or UM. I do like the UF campus, because it has history like FSU's. It's also a big plus that the FSU campus is compact and you can get to class one time. The "congested" campus makes it more vibrant and you always run into a few friends on your way to class. Being from south Florida, I love the fact that Tallahassee is far and doesn't resemble the rest of Florida at all. They actually have seasons and the many hills give the city it's charm. Going to FSU was like attending an out-of-state school with in-state tuition, the best of both worlds. I guess the things that makes the campus unatractive to some, are the same things that made me love it. Living in Miami now, makes me appreciate Tallahassee more than ever.
