I’m from Michigan, and we were never taught anything about the left lane being for passing. Here, the left lane is for regular driving, the same as the right lane, though the left lane often goes a bit faster, particularly on the freeway.

I was taught sort of the opposite, that you’re supposed to be in the right lane, unless you want to go faster than the right lane is going, or sometimes if you’re passing an on-ramp. Different states must teach it different ways.

In Ohio, the left lane is generally used only for passing, except that out-of-state drivers generally don’t follow that. As someone who lives near the Michigan border, I can pick out Michigan drivers without even seeing the license plates. I guess different states just have different ways of…uh…utilizing available road space.

Alaska driving. Left lane = faster drivers or people who are passing. My dad’s a driver’s ed. teacher, and there are no rules that say “you can’t cruise in the left lane.” Oh and not all Asian women suck at driving! Although a lot of them do, admittedly. I’m half-Asian, but I’m a good driver if I can say so myself. I never have been pulled over/never have had a ticket and I have been driving for almost 5 years.

In Minnesota its supposed to be slower traffic keep right and if you are faster you should be in the left lane. It’s there to be driven on and it keeps the traffic lighter in the right lane.

I stay in the left lane because I find myself constantly passing other cars and semis.

If I see a car coming up to me in the mirror when I am in the left lane, I move over to the right to let them pass by. You should do this too, it’s so annoying when the left lane is clogged up.

And we here in MI can pick out Ohio drivers by those going <70. lol.

In Michigan, we do learn in driver’s ed that the left lane is for passing, but no one listens to it. It is technically illegal to drive in the left lane without passing, but rarely enforced. However, there are a bunch of signs though on the free way that say “Drive Right, Pass Left.” I don’t know why you were never taught that the left lane was for passing…

Our highways are almost all at least 4 lanes, but generally only 2 are usable because of construction. You have to be going at least 85 to be in the left lane, 90 or 95 on busier highways. You WILL be in trouble here if you don’t move over if you’re going under 85 and someone is on your bumper.

Maybe it’s a county by county thing, or something along those lines, because I’m in the Ann Arbor area, and I’ve never seen one of those signs.

The highways I’ve driven on also don’t tend to be four lane ones (usually two or three lanes), so maybe it’s more common on larger highways. Typing that, I just realized that maybe the difference in left-lane usage taught in Michigan depends on whether the highway is just two lanes or if it’s three or four lanes, because they already have more than one driving lane.

I’m from NYC. I’ve never heard of the left lane being a passing lane. What I have been taught is that the left lane is the express lane. You get to cruise in that lane. That’s usually the lane I take. It’s annoying when someone drives in the left lane and is going at the speed limit. As far as I know the right and middle lanes usually have cars driving at the speed limit.

Btw idk about the legality of driving at the speed limit and causing traffic, but if you’re doing that, you’re an ****. if you’re a slow driver or don’t care to speed, get the * out the left lane. it’s unsafe for everyone involved.

I think Michigan is 70, and Ohio is 65. Usually they don’t pick up people for going 75 in Ohio on the interstates, but on the US and state highways, they nail people for everything.

Deal with it, chump. It’s called a speed LIMIT for a reason. Last time I checked, my taxes paid for the road, so I’m more than welcome to drive on it legally.

A CA cop might, for driving slower than is safe given the conditions. CA general speed law: “Drive at a speed that is safe given your conditions.”

Of course, you’re not supposed to drive over the speed limit…but who the heck drives at the speed limit in California?

We’re taught that the left lane is the fastest…with the lanes to the right moving slower in descending order (most of our freeways are four or five lanes). So lots of people drive in the left lane because people there drive more quickly. If someone is driving at speed limit in the left lane, a police officer might indeed pull them over, because someone going 70 or 75 might not be able to stop in time to accommodate their 65 speed. Dangerous for all involved.

Depending on the cop, they might not give you a ticket, just a warning.
