Why do you hog the left lane?

^ Basically, the laws in NJ and CA are written subjectively enough to pull you over whenever. It’s particularly useful for discrimination, chumps.

i didnt learn the left lane was hte passing lane here in arizona. on the highway, you drive in the left lane if you want to drive faster than most traffic. it makes more sense because if youre in the right lanes youre generally lookign out for your exit or something. its really annoying when ppl drive in the left lane and are barely going the speed limit.

From my experience, it’s applied moreso to interstate traffic. I’m also in Arizona, and while I highly doubt I’d be pulled over for going 65 in the left lane on the 51 (hasn’t happened yet, and I’d be shocked if it ever did), if I was driving all the way to Los Angeles in the left lane on the 10 (which is only 2 lanes for the majority of that trip), I’d say there’s a greater chance I could be pulled over.

Think of it as me saving your irresponsible ass a speeding ticket. :)

i don’t consider going 10mph above the speed limit on the express lane, “speeding.” and apparently nor do the cops that have passed by me in the past. :/

They should raise those limits on the Interstates to at least 80 mph for cars on normal terrain. Even better, they should invest in variable speed signaling. Even 75 is too slow for decent car w/ decent driver.

Simple: because 80% of US drivers believe they are above average in driving skill; they make excuses for their own bad driving (e.g., “since I’m at the speed limit I don’t have to move over for anyone”); if they saw that same behavior in others, they’d correctly identify it as bad driving.

In other words, when we drive, we are all from Lake Woebegone: everybody is above average

Kei

P.S. Except for me; I know I’m a below average driver :-)

Especially on the freeway, most cops in CA won’t pull you over for speeding unless you’re weaving in and out of traffic in a blatant attempt to go faster than everyone else.

This is The Rule™ here in Plano TX. The main roads are 40, 45, and 55mph. The highways are 55, 65, or 80 mph. Everybody drives at least 10 over on the main roads, and about 80 on all the highways (in the left few lanes), regardless of speed limit. Nobody gets pulled over for speeding unless they are weaving in and out of traffic.

The only exception is when there is almost no traffic. Then it’s too easy to pull you over for doing 52 in a 45. Especially if your car is something “cool/sporty”. I drive an Accord and I never see those pulled over. If I was in a Mustang or a Corvette, it would. A lot of people agree on this point.

I’ve been driving for 3 years here and I’ve never been pulled over for anything. I regularly am passed by cops doing 55 in the 40 while I’m doing 50.

65 is the limit in Jersey. RIDICULOUS.

NJ is awful for driving in every way. Period.

And it smells.

^ then u obviously havnt been the nice areas.
Why would the CEO of Vonage($55 million in compesation last year) live 3 miles down the road from me? hmm i wonder. nyc in 40 minutes. beach in 30. mountains in 50.

and yea, to everyone here who said “because it’s fast”. i totally agree… ITS OK to drive on the left lane if you’re going fast enough.

but 9 out of 10 times, people go 70 in the left lane and reason to their little selves “oh im going above the limit, ill just sit here.”

When I was driving from Philadelphia to Portland (ME) I remember that the main Interstate had 8 lanes or more, but there were 4 central lanes (2 each direction) reserved only for cars os so. Pretty interesting, makes it safer.

Driving in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Dakotas and Idaho was better: almost no traffic jams (except for Denver Metro), 75 mph, cheap gas. Desert, Rockies, no crowded cities at all. I miss it - except for the blizzards.

I drove on the autobahn in Germany. It was fun for about 30 seconds and then your knuckles get sore from gripping the wheel so hard. I averaged about 95 mph and one time got up to 106 and I was one of the slow ones!

Here are the rules in Germany. Trucks and those going less than 75 stay in the right lane. The left lane is ONLY used for passing and the center lane is for everyone over 75 mph. It was very scary to pass someone going 100 and then pull in and just about rear end the guy in front of you who is “only” going" 90 mph. We figured that most of the cars that passed us were doing 120-160. KLids cannot get their license until they are 18 in Germany.

“then u obviously havnt been the nice areas”

NJ has the best and worst of the country, I think. Franklin Lakes is just about the perfect place to live, but then again, the average lifespan in Camden is just about 6 seconds. I’m fortunate enough to live in one of the nicer areas, but I certainly aknowledge the bad of the state.

irrelevent post/

That’s not exactly true. 40% of German Autobahns have speed limit (usually 70 to 80 mph). There’s no threshold for driving on right or left lane, just some common uses, on the stretches that don’t have statutory speed limit. If you are driving at 60 mph while overtaking 50 mph truck, it’s legal, no ticket for you.

They fine (relatively heavily) for tailgaiting there.

Almost all continental Western Europe don’t authorize teenagers to drive cars and full motorbikes before 18 - that is a shame.

/NJ info mode on

What about that super-mega-ultra large mall they were building near I-95 in Bergen area?. I read that it would surpass Mall of America as the biggest in the country

/NJ info mode off

nj = the armpit of america lol that’s what a friend of mine called it. he’s a nj resident.

Pennsylvania is clearly better than New Jersey.
