I applied September 3rd, and I still have not heard anything from pitt yet. Should I call the admissions office tomorrow and find out what is going on? I'm getting tired of waiting so long. There are a lot of people that I know who applied after me and before me who have heard back being accepted or deferred, so I don't know what to do. I applied to the School of Nursing too, and have seen others on here who have been accepted.

what are your stats? you are most likely borderline.

When I originally applied i had a 24 on my ACT’s, but I took them again the following week and got a 25 on them. My school does percentage for averages, and I have a 93.2 which is an A average at my school. I’m currently enrolled in AP Chem, AP Human Phys., and I’m taking Psychology at IUP. I had three excellent LOR’s, involved in NHS (treasurer), Senior Class (treasurer), Junior Class (president), Student Council, Tri-M, Ballet-14 years, Track-5 years, and Golf-4 years. I thought I had a good essay about my trip to Ecuador it talked about how the people guided me towards the medical field. Do you think I should call them?

also, with the 25 on my ACT, my math and science were 26’s.

It woudn’t hurt to email your admissions counselor at Pitt, my son did that and a week later he got his acceptance at Pitt, however he had a 90 gpa and 33 act.

okay, I’ll try that. Yes, I know that my scores for my ACT’s aren’t very high. I’m terrible at taking standardized tests. Do you know if there would be anything that I could do if I don’t get accepted to nursing? like, would I be able to get into the school of arts and sciences and then change over into nursing later?

lpjc623 - Please contact your Admissions Counselor as kun172 suggests. Your test scores could be a bit better (there was an ACT of 28 accepted to Nursing) but your EC’s, GPA, etc. should help. Did the Pitt web portal say your application was “complete”? I’ve read other posts that indicate it’s very hard to transfer into Nursing from Arts & Sciences. Good Luck!

I did contact her and she said I should be hearing back before the end of November because they haven’t received a decision yet. The pitt web portal did say that my application is complete. I have heard that it’s hard from some people, but I’ve also heard that it’s not difficult from students at pitt now, so I don’t know what I will do. I’ve already been accepted to Duquesne (with scholarship) so I do have a backup if Pitt doesn’t work out, but I love Pitt’s campus-definitely my top choice.

your borderline so it could go either way but i would suggets sending them your first marking period grades as long as they are good!

first marking period grades were so-so. my school recently switched from block scheduling to an 8 period day, so the first marking period was a time of adjustment. still A’s and B’s though.

lpjc,

Did you try taking the SAT’s? I think they are much more common and maybe will be a better test for you.

I took the SAT’s already. I did well again on the math portion like I did the ACT’s, but the english I didn’t do well on at all. Thank you for the suggestion though! I’m just going to have to wait it out right now and see what happens. I’m pretty sure that I’m not going to get in, but I don’t know if I will reapply into Arts and Sciences yet or not.

If I reapplied to Arts and Sciences I would need to meet with an admissions counselor to talk about transferring from Arts and Sciences into Nursing because I don’t want to go to Pitt if I can’t be Guaranteed my major.

Just want to warn you, Nursing has a limited number of seats per year (another reason it’s so competitive) and transferring INTO Nursing if you aren’t accepted into it originally is very difficult, if almost impossible. You are trying to get a spot that may or may not exist (they only let in transfers if someone drops out, to my knowledge). You’re looking at very few spots opening up after the start of term, and you’re not only competing against other Pitt students trying to transfer in, but even other students from other colleges trying to transfer to Pitt.

Just an FYI if your heart is set on Nursing at Pitt.

Nursing is very competitive. There is only so much room in the clinics and hospitals and the numbers are very firm. It is next to impossible to transfer into nursing, it would also take yoy an extra year as the classes are sequential. Have you tried Duquesne? There nursing program is good too and only 1 mile from Pitt.

I’ve been in touch with an inside woman at Pitt who has told me the same information. She said that it is something that I could do, but it’s risky. My heart is set on pitt, not so much the school of nursing, but the school in general.

luvs2ski - I have already been accepted into Duquesne’s nursing program, I’m just not in love with the school. I will take it if Pitt doesn’t work out though. Maybe I will try to transfer from Duquesne’s nursing if it works out correctly. Currently I’m just going to see what happens with Pitt…still waiting for a response.

AwesomeOpossum - have you heard of anyone getting into Nursing with my stats (3rd post down)? I know my ACT scores are low :(

I don’t know many students, but from what I’ve seen in the CC threads, it seems that your ACT is pretty low compared to most accepted candidates (I think most of them are in the 32+ range?). I don’t know much about the ACT in general though, so that’s also not very helpful of me.

Okay. Yeah, I think it would be a long shot for me to get in…there were some people with 28’s, and I noticed one person who had a 1690 on their SAT’s which isn’t much higher than what I had on my SAT’s (1650). I still think it’s going to be a long shot though…just trying to stay positive though.

lpjc623 - Here is a site with an ACT to SAT conversion table (though I can’t vouch for it):

[SAT ACT Conversion Chart | Convert ACT scores to SAT scores](<a href=“SAT ACT Conversion Chart | Convert ACT scores to SAT scores”>SAT ACT Conversion Chart | Convert ACT scores to SAT scores)

Here is a conversion table from the ACT site:

The person who posted saying they were admitted to Pitt Nursing with a 1690 SAT also claimed to have a 28 ACT. What makes me wonder is that the chart shows they should have scored a 24 on the ACT ??? My D had a 1970 SAT & was admitted on Monday though I am not sure she will enroll (she did NOT take the ACT).

It’s good that you have been admitted to Duquesne as a backup - so you do have someplace to go in case Pitt rejects or defers you. Anyway, I wish you the very best of luck.

Pitt’s 2010-2011 Common Data Set is the most recent one online for which ACT scores are reported. That year, a full 59% of freshmen scored between 24 and 29. Pitt’s standards are inching up, by all accounts, but I wouldn’t expect a 28 to have fallen into the bottom quarter this quickly. Those scores aren’t broken down by school, though. Does Nursing have higher standards than Arts and Sciences? I don’t know the answer to that one. Another possibility: Are either your Math or English subscores below 25?

YellowJacket76 – The chart is for general comparison of scores. Lots of kids do better on one test than the other because they’re testing different things.
