why is emma watson picking brown over yale?

I love clueless wonders.

Ms Watson is going to Brown. Here it is, finally for all of you:

[Catching Up With… Emma Watson :: Features Film & TV :: Articles :: Paste](http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2009/07/catching-up-with-emma-watson.html)

So we have two inconsistent interviews published the same day, one where she refuses to say where she’s going and says that she hasn’t decided on a major and is coming to the US in part because she doesn’t have to have a major to start, and one where she says she’s going to Brown to read literature. The one I quoted was in the Philadelphia Inquirer, which is still a fairly serious newspaper, and was written by one of its reporters. The other is in Paste.com

Someone is seriously off the reservation. Maybe it’s Ms. Watson. Maybe it’s one of the reporters (in which case I vote for the Paste guy). Maybe it’s Watson’s publicist (in all likelihood the actual author of the Paste story). Who knows?

I do love being called a clueless wonder, especially when I have along with much of my class followed Emma Watson’s choice as the media spoke of “confirmed” decisions at Oxford, Columbia, and now Brown. At the time I wrote my post, that article was just being published online (notice yesterday’s date?), so I based my opinion off the fact that Emma herself never confirmed Brown. Maybe Paste.com is legit, maybe you are a little naive to believe it. Either way she is most likely going to Brown since Dan said it as well. That does not change the fact that you were rude in your post.

The first confirmed news that Emma Watson was attending Brown appeared on a french magazine, “Dream Up”, back on June 18th. I happened to be in Europe at the time. The English translation is terrible, so I hope you know a little french. ( And if you think my post was rude, you are certainly very new at CC.

JHS, I find the most credible interview the one mentioned in the Providence Journal in RI. Apparently she gave in and admitted that she was going to Brown. I find the Philadephia report surprising as well.

[People: Emma Watson, of ‘Potter’ fame, heading for Brown | Lifebeat | projo.com | The Providence Journal](<a href=“The Providence Journal: Local News, Politics & Sports in Providence, RI”>The Providence Journal: Local News, Politics & Sports in Providence, RI)

EMMA WATSON CONFIRMED TO GO TO PENN I SAW It IN A NEWSPAPER THIS MORNING!

Hmmm. This has turned into an interesting case-study in journalism.

The Providence Journal story is interesting – it repeats the Guardian interview with Daniel Radcliffe, in which he said Watson was going to Brown, but then adds that Watson confirmed it to a Guardian reporter. The Radcliffe interview was posted/referenced by several on this thread, but I haven’t seen anything that said the Guardian had confirmed it with Watson other than the Providence Journal. But the ProJo is so specific – and I have to believe that it would be ultra-careful with sourcing a hometown story where there will be a lot of blowback if it is wrong – that I agree it’s pretty credible.

Which leaves the question of how Ms. Watson and her handlers let an Inquirer reporter embarass himself by publishing an interview that may have actually taken place a week or more ago, but which Watson herself seems to have rendered inaccurate (or not up to date) prior to its publication date. If I were he, I would be boiling mad. Someone owes him a big apology and a raincheck for another exclusive.

Another question: Did Watson double-deposit at Columbia? With or without telling them? Or did Columbia simply do her a solid by helping to create some ambiguity about her plans?

JHS, the “Emma Watson” listed in the Columbia Directory and discussed on CC is actually listed as “Charlotte E. Watson.” (Apparently the famous Emma’s middle name is Charlotte.) The speculation on CC and elsewhere was that Emma was trying to obfuscate about her college plans by listing herself under a sort of pseudonym in the Columbia Directory. But Columbia’s Ms. Watson is a student in the School of Continuing Education. I bet she’s a different person entirely. Such silly fun.

Probably you’re right. It’s not like “Watson” or “Charlotte” (or “E.”) are so unique that in a place like NYC they might not appear more than once in the same combination.

Next question: I’m sure Brown has a lovely little police force, but from my visits there I don’t remember them as being particularly ubiquitous. Brown (unlike, say, Yale or Columbia) isn’t designed for keeping the masses at bay. So, if you are Brown’s President and VP - Security, what are you doing now to deal with the fact that in 5 weeks or so the biggest 19-year-old star in the world (give or take Miley Cyrus . . . please!), with a movie out in theaters that should be rounding the $600 million mark around then, is going to show up on your campus to play let’s-pretend-I’m-normal?

You are right. I have wondered about that myself. However, I find that Brown students are very low keyed and when I have talked to a few of them about it, all i get is a “what’s the big deal”. After all, Brown has had JFK Jr, President Carter’s daughter and currently Nicholson’s and Spielberg’s daughters, but I agree that Ms Watson is a totally different ball game.

If anything, Brown’s location in College Hill is more quiet than Columbia in NYC. It will be interesting to see.

Actually I speculate that she IS in fact going to Yale and is in Calhoun college. When we got the list for all the kids in our college with the address and numbers and such one girl was just listed as Female, which probably indicates that she is too important to have such information listed. It is specifically suspicious because EVERYONE else in the entire school (except for JE) had a complete list as far as I know. So who knoes?

Dbate, I think you’re wrong. Why would Daniel Radcliffe lie? And, based on what I’ve seen on tv, Emma Watson really just wants to study literature. That makes Brown a better fit b/c there are no distribution reqs and no grades if you don’t want them. I don’t know what your Calhoun thing is, but probably someone different, an extra space, etc etc.

Obviously because they have a much better Quidditch team at Brown, compared to Yale.

Well, this should end all speculation now. Someone should call the reporter from Phili…

[The Brown Daily Herald - ‘Harry Potter’ star Watson to go from Hogwarts to College Hill](http://www.browndailyherald.com/harry-potter-star-watson-to-go-from-hogwarts-to-college-hill-1.1775433)

LOL At the length of this thread!!!

At LEAST she is intellectually qualified. She had straight A’s in those Euro exams (or should I say OWL’s?) I find her attractive since she’s so academically oriented.

HAHAHHAHAhahah

sigh if she didn’t apply to Yale, i wonder why b/c i’m absolutely in love with it after my visit there.
its so freaking gorgeous and would be an amazing place to spend the next 4 years of my life.

dang, emma watson is probably going to hogwarts grad school. Who really cares where she’s going as long as it’s a good fit for her?

Dbate, I think that the Female listed in the Calhoun list is just an empty spot. When I saw the list as well I got excited for about 2 seconds and then realized that since the spot was at the very end of the list, it most likely was just an extra room/spot.

Are you in Calhoun, too?!

[It’s official: Emma Watson is going to Brown](It's official: Emma Watson is going to Brown - Yale Daily News)

It’s official: Emma Watson is going to Brown

BY VICTOR ZAPANA

It’s official: Emma Watson is going to Brown University.

Pity.

Watson has been quiet about what school she will attend in the fall, although her “Harry Potter” co-star, Daniel Radcliffe, let slip earlier this month in an interview with The Guardian that the actress had decided on Brown. Watson herself confirmed the decision in an interview with Paste Magazine, saying she will study literature at the school.

In the interview, Watson emphasized that she is not just another pretty face:

Paste: And was that [a] deliberate choice, to step out of the limelight for a while?

Watson: It’s not so much that, no, I’m not trying to hide or anything like that. It sounds so geeky, but I really do like studying and reading, and if I’m not working on Harry Potter, then my greatest relaxation is to sit with a book. That’s how I escape stress—in literature. I always have several books on the go at any one moment, so it’s no good you asking “What’s on the bedside table at the moment, Emma?” because often I can’t even see the table! I think that all that reading is just about the only similarity I have with Hermione, if you ask me.

Paste: It’s going to be vastly different environment.

Watson: Yes, and that’s what makes it all so exciting. I’ll be sorry to leave all my family and friends behind, but hey, it’s only a few hours’ flight home.

Click here for a thorough recap of Watson’s college search, courtesy of the Brown Daily Herald. Reports at various times had linked Watson to Yale (here, here and here, with the second report debunked here), Harvard (here), Brown (here), Columbia (here) and Cambridge (here).

It’s anyone’s guess why Watson passed on Yale; her publicist did not return a telephone message seeking comment. And while she visited the University twice, Watson never actually finished her application and formally applied, officials in the Admissions Office said.

Nicolas Niarchos contributed reporting.

I don’t think that’s actually true. If you read the original article, it doesn’t sound real at all. Here’s a quote:

Paste: You are off to University in the autumn.

Watson: I am—to Brown, which is an Ivy League establishment in the U.S.A. I’ve got a place there to read literature.

Seriously? Does that actually sound like something she’d say? I saw her on Letterman and she was talking about how she’s interested in the liberal arts education. And you don’t get a place to study anything specifically. I think it’s made up.

But also it still doesn’t matteerrrrrr! Everyone should just quit fretting over why she’s choosing whatever and let the poor girl get on with her life! Hahaha deary deary me.
