Why is everyone at this school so dumb?

I’m a freshman, and I noticed so many people here are so far behind academically – I don’t mean to put it in a mean way, but I’m surprised at the pool of students at Davis after hearing on CC that it was a GREAT school. In my calculus C class, the class average for the first midterm was a 47%… and the test wasn’t even so hard (I got a 95), and it wasn’t like there was a good portion of the class that did good… only 3 people got A’s (in a class of 237). I’m a bit surprised that a school with good reputation has such low quality of students… I’m even more disappointed that I was WAITLISTED here initially. Why the heck was I waitlisted when I’m getting in the top 5 of classes? I’m a bit angry that I was waitlisted at a school where the average student is doing so poorly in classes.

That is somewhat surprising - especially considering that according to published data the average high school gpa of incoming freshmen is 4.07 and average SAT is 1924 - and it is difficult to be admitted! Sounds like many of your classmates aren’t ready for the Calculus C class.

Really should have re-evaluated making the title of this post basically say “Why are other people so dumb.” Rude.

@boxandwhiskers Yes you are right – I probably should have given another title for this thread. I can’t change it now, but like as @usamom said I was absolutely astonished to see such scores in my classes when everyone on CC said its a great public school.

I’m a bit furious at the entire holistic admissions process – if I feel like I am at a school where the average student is FAR behind me academically, I can only imagine the situation of the few others. I think that the entire concept of holistic approach is completely flawed and I would never be in a situation had I lived in Canada or the UK, where the primary source of college admittance depends on your academic credentials.

@usamom It a class of 237 students… there is only 1 other calculus c class being taught this quarter and that only has 50 people. Shouldn’t my class be a good representation of students taking math class at Davis?

I don’t think you should be worrying about how other students are doing in classes, academically. Concentrate on your own business. It’s not your business how the school admits other students either. The tone of this post sounds like you’re complaining about being associated with people you think are less than you. If you’re so worried about going to a school that you feel admits mostly “stupid people”, then transfer to some other school.

@boxandwhiskers You know how hard it is to transfer into berkeley, sd, or la from another UC? It’s not that easy…And they still go on with the holistic review. My point is that the holistic review is really inefficient in determining who fits in where. There might be a case where it works well for top schools like Harvard and the likes, but I don’t think it’s sustainable for the vast majority of schools. And it isn’t my business how schools admit students? Oh, we should just let the government handle everything right? But when the NSA gathers data from people to counteract terrorism, people get all defensive about that. Why is it ok to talk against authority in some cases but not for other cases. Seriously, liberals are some of the most hypocritic people I’ve ever seen. Liberals support the idea of different views but are surprised when different views exist.

So what’s the point here? Superiority complex or political rant?

I’m smelling a sense of both.

@bodangles Well if you are looking down on my sort of political rant, then why do feminists get the privilege of lashing out of the government on their supposedly existing problems?

I wonder what the other students are saying about you.

@iamjack: Get off your high horse. One calculus class is not representative a whole university. Based on some previous threads, you already regretted enrolling in UC Davis before your Freshman year started. If you are unhappy with your situation, then transfer as suggested by @boxandwhiskers or make the best of the situation. Maybe you need to talk with this poster from UCI and compare notes in regards to your “dumb” fellow students.

@TomSrOfBoston Oh my friends and I joke about UC Davis all the time. We all say how embarrassing it is to tell other people that we go here.

What does your calc class have to do with feminism?

@bodangles You are looking down on my political rant. What’s so bad about a political rant? Feminists do it all the time, but they are constantly encouraged to continue doing what they do. Why is my rant getting so much hate?

Because it’s completely irrelevant???

Actually FYI, UC Berkeley is the only school in the UC system to have a holistic review. UC Davis and UCLA admit based on grades and GPA. Davis doesn’t even read personal statements unless it’s for specific scholarship reasons. You signed up for a public college, it’s a huge melting pot of people coming from all different directions and backgrounds. If you’re looking for more challenging courses, seek out a counselor.

@bodangles what?

Too bad you couldn’t get into Stanford.

@boxandwhiskers I did talk to my counselor… she made a schedule for me based on my dual enrollment credits. Due to this, I can not take any of the classes I want to until winter quarter of NEXT year…
