Why is stanford so good? Convince me that Stanford > All

Hi, I'm interested in Stanford among other schools (most noticeably Upenn).

tell me why stanford is so great and why I should value stanford above all else. convince me :)

lol, I can tell someone’s on their “Why Stanford” essay.

My thoughts are that if you’re truly interested in Stanford, do the research and find out why it’s a good fit for you. Nobody here knows you, so we would not be able to tell you why you would want to go to Stanford.

Stanford’s peer schools are HYPMC. All the rest are not in Stanford’s league.

Of those Stanford peer schools, only Caltech is in California. California has an almost perfect weather almost all year round. But Caltech is cutthroat and Stanford is laid back, so you’d have a much better social life at Stanford than at Caltech. Furthermore, Stanford is multi-university offering diverse programs. Caltech is a specialized school, thus Stanford has a more diverse student body, and perhaps, should have a better social scene than Caltech. Stanford has also a great connection with Silicon Valley.

And it has palm trees :P

11 palm trees to every student!

Stanford is awesome. really
diverse students, diverse interests/majors, strong academics, strong athletics, good weather, california, silicon valley, palm trees, activities for any interest

and you get to ride a bike all day… lol! And it has its own linear accelerator, and you can say, “I go to Stanford” when forced into small talk at your parents parties… :)

So academics + Social Life +Athletics+ SLAC+Bikes+Ego = Stanford is perfect!

Haha woops, I did not mean to give that impression. I’m just a junior thinking about things…

I probably should have put more info so I don’t come off as uninformed. I looked at numbers and things that matter to me and Stanford is definitely one of my top choices. Now it’s just a matter of eventually visiting campus (I live on the east coast, oh noes) and getting information from students

lol.

Anyways, what do you guys have to say about Stanford being in a suburban area? I always imagined college being in a city.

I’d also add that the student housing is absolutely wonderful. I stayed in SCHWAB RESIDENTIAL CENTER and I had an amazing time staying there. I’d imagine the housing for undergrad is just as fantastic. It’s quite a bit expensive though. But it’s well worth the penny.

hey RML! i stayed in FLOMO and chillout at tresider.
did u go there for summer college?

stanford is awesome cuz they have the t-shirt called fear the tree.

As somebody who lives right next to UMD (lots of ‘Fear the Turtle’ t-shirts in a similar shade of red) I’d like to second this for awesomeness.

Hi jimyjim. By saying FLOMO did you mean Florence Moore?

No; I was there for 6 months only - program started in January. SCHWAB is for postgrad students only. :)

yes, florence moore hall, it was a great time
however my grades there were bad. == CR in Calc and a C in Econ.

Stanford’s “suburban” status is a non-issue. Most students prefer to revolve their social lives around the (self-contained) campus itself. Occasionally, some students will venture into Berkeley or San Francisco if they seek the variety of an urban setting.

One inherent problem (besides space and safety concerns) with some of the more “urban” campuses is that the centrality of the students’ social experience can shift to the surrounding city instead of the campus where it ideally should be.
