do you think NYU is a prestigious school or is it overrated just be/c of its location?

Columbia is in new york… I don’t think its a matter of location.

O-ver-rate-ed

yes columbia is in new york but have you even been to both campuses?
columbia’s campus is on the outskirts of the main city.
nyu is in the middle of all the action…so much that its not even a real “campus” to me.
its just a bunch of buildings…

Hmm…USC isn’t on the list either.

^Too controversial.

I think the name “NYU” has a lot to do with it. I mean there is so many other things that NYC is known for that a university named after the city would not necessarily stand out no matter how good it is. Don’t get me wrong here: I am not advocating for NYU, neither am I questioning its value. Just an hypothesis.

^ I think that’s complete bull (no offense intended): see UChicago.

@OP
It could be that it’s overrated, though I don’t know enough about it to make a judgement either way. I’m just pretty sure it has nothing to do with the location.

^Chicago aint nothing like NYC!

Anyway, I guess it was just an hypothesis like I said.

Tisch has a really good performing arts program. Same goes for Stern and Courant Institute for their respective fields.

Honestly, I’ve always wondered about that. :/

probably because of how terrible the financial aid is, nah I really don’t know

Perhaps NYU isn’t a top college.

NYU is a great place, but a lot of colleges (not Ivies) are actually better acknowleged ie. Caltech, Stanford, UChicago, UC Berkeley etc. I think NYU is as popular as it is seeing as it appeals to many teenagers have a fantasy where they live in NY… though that’s not in every case, many intelligent students go to NYU (such as the Stern students).

Courant institute is the #1 ranked Applied Mathematics institution, and Tisch has one of the top ranked theatre programs.

However, students are turned off by the high pricetag of not only paying for the school, but living in NY in general (this applies more often to OOS students).

NYU is more of a dream school for a lot of people than an actual “top” college. Not that I’m trying to bash their academics. I’m sure they’re average/good, depending on the program.

^yea i agree. im remember reading that it was number 1 or 2 on students’ “dream” school.

NYU is:

-overrated.

unnecessarily expensive (bad fin. aid)

-full of liberal hipsters

-is an okay school

I don’t see how NYU is that good. It’s probably just the name & location.

I think if it had a better financial aid program, it would get a lot more attention

Because of those damn hipsters and their Starbucks and black chipped nail polish, skinny jeans, flats and worship of obscure music.

Blame the hipsters.
