Why was I deferred? And What can I do to make sure I am accepted RD with scholarship?

I have a 4.0 and have taken every demanding course my high school offers...
(Class rank 11/326) Top 3%

Junior Year-
AP Calc (A+, A)
AP US History(A, A+)
AP English (A, A)

Senior Year-
AP Chemistry (A+)
AP English (A)
Honors Physics (A+) and next semester I am switching into AP Physics (without taking the entire course...I want to show college admissions staff that I am looking to challenge myself)

I play Girls Varsity Lacrosse
I have received many Faculty Awards in Math and Science
I am in Interact Club, Student Council, Humanitarian Club, Debate Club, and in the Student Leadership Organization

I am not an excellent standardized test taker; however,
SATs-
630 Math
620 Writing (10 on my essay)
560 Critical Reading

ACTs-
31 Math
29 English
22 Reading
22 Science
(10 on my essay)

I was deferred to Regular Decision; however many other people from my school who are significantly lower than me with class rank and GPA were accepted.

What do you think my chances for admission will be for RD? With/ without Scholarship? I am going to send the admissions office a letter that Northeastern is my top school, and I was selected to be a teacher's assistant in my Physics class.

I think they’re like “this kid views us as his/her safety.”
you’re overqualified.

I didn’t even think of Northeastern as my safety. I was hoping to get into the Honors and Engineering Programs. I’m going to contact admissions and tell them that NEU is my first choice, what do you think my chances are for RD and getting a scholarship? Any suggestions on what I should do?

I remember that in their supplements, one of the questions was
“How many other schools are you applying to?”

I said 1 cuz I only applied to NEU (my first choice), and a safety… for earlies of course.

Maybe if you have an outrageous number, they might view it as a bad thing…

I guess calling them and letting them know that they’re not your safety wouldn’t do you any harm… but have in mind that engineering is a popular major there and it’s got a lot of competition :T

You should make it RD, just keep grades somewhat consistent

Yeah, that’s why I took such demanding courses as I did and worked as hard as I did. I just don’t see what else I could have done. Maybe they filtered the applications with SAT scores? But I didn’t think my scores were that poor, and I definitely thought the rigor of my courses and my GPA would shine out above my scores.

What is the probability that I will get accepted/ and or with a scholarship?

And I am a minority in engineering because I am a female.

Wow. A female in engineering. That is indeed a minority in that field x]

sarcasm? or serious?

I’m pretty serious. I know previous upperclassmen who went to engineering.
They complain that getting a gf is practically impossible LOL

Haha, I would imagine. However, I hope that factor will help play in and help me get admitted in RD.

Okay, how does this make sense…everyone from my school who applied to Northeastern (all lower class rank, GPA, and everything) were accepted, and I the top person was deferred. How is that right? That just seems incorrect…can they make mistakes?

Don’t assume you were deferred because you were overqualified. There isn’t even any proof that they do that.

You test scores are not that impressive, you didn’t break 1200 on the SAT’s. If you were deferred, I wouldn’t really expect you to be given a scholarship, because if they wanted you that badly, wouldn’t they have accepted you? What you should do, though, is get fantastic grades during this first semester, maybe take the SAT’s/ACT’s again, and do something in your community, and then tell them about it. Make them aware that NU is your first choice.

I really don’t think this whole “they reject the best applicants” is true. They want smart people to come to the school. Even if 95% of those geniuses say “thanks but no thanks”, they still get a few. And that’s where the scholarships come in as well. There is absolutely no proof that NU, or any school for that matter, rejects the top applicants, because it just doesn’t make sense. As far as I’m aware, the EA acceptees have to decide pretty soon anyway, in time for the RD decisions, so it wouldn’t make a difference to them. They want the best kids they can get.

Yeah, but it also doesn’t make sense that they would defer me who is higher up than any other student who applied from my school, so you can’t say that either. I don’t think that I am overqualified in terms of SATs, however I know that my grades are the best they can be (I practically have an A+ average) and I take the most rigorous courses. The only AP’s that I haven’t taken b/c it would be almost impossible for me to add them to my schedule are AP Biology and AP Euro - and neither of them go toward my major so I consider that irrelevant.

Are you saying you don’t think I’ll get accepted RD? with or without a scholarship? I don’t see why they wouldn’t want me to attend their school -unless your saying that they are judging me on one test.

I agree that you should have gotten in especially with that strong gpa and class rank. NEU is certainley not a safety for you though. If anything it’s a match. As for an acceptance during regular decision I heard it is a tougher pool and they accept less students from this pool, but I suspect you have a good shot if you reinforce your interest. Also it’s a pretty bad attitude to think you are better than someone. Statistically maybe you are but maybe they had a life experience/perspective that compensates for their low stats. I also can’t imagine their stats being too much different from yours beside a lower gpa. I really hope that you get in. Good luck

I definitely did not classify NEU as a safety. I personally thought it was a match - and I loved the school, it is my first choice. I am shocked that people in my school who are so much lower than me in class rank, gpa, etc. were accepted and I was deferred. I work so much harder than them so it’s frustrating. I would just love to know that I was accepted and it would be great if I got a scholarship. I don’t mean to be modest but I work extremely hard - I do think that I deserve at least an acceptance. I just don;t think it’s correct that this happened. Do you think I will be admitted RD?

I think you have a decent shot of being accepted, but don’t expect a scholarship or honors. If they thought you were that good (i.e. worthy of a scholarship), they would have accepted you.

Those other people in your school could have had a great student resume (the "extra"s), or maybe yours was weak. Don’t assume class rank and GPA are all that matters.

Maybe they were skeptical because your GPA is way higher than your SAT scores, so maybe they thought that your grades are inflated (not weighted, but rather inflated, that teachers are giving you higher grades than you deserve). Unlikely, but possible.

^I’m pretty sure the vast majority of NU students receive some form of aid.

Yeah, but they accepted people who are in the same classes I am enrolled in…so that would not make sense.

And their SAT scores are practically the same as mine.
And an 1810 is middle 50% SATs in NEU’s stats and my GPA is greater than the middle 50% accepted…Whats a “decent shot”? [ These people had 3.6, 3.7, 3.8 ---- I have 4.0] I know that is not everything but neither are SATS and I have great extracurriculars…

Interact Club
Student Council (Treasurer)
Humanitarian Club
Debate Club

Lots of community service

Faculty awards in math, art…

You don’t think I have an excellent chance of being admitted?

" ^I’m pretty sure the vast majority of NU students receive some form of aid. "

He’s talking about a scholarship, which is merit (academic) based. The top 25% of those who are accepted receive the dean’s scholarship.

"You don’t think I have an excellent chance of being admitted? "

You seem like a smart guy, but it’s not my decision. If they deferred you, there must have been a reason.
