Why was I deferred? And What can I do to make sure I am accepted RD with scholarship?

I think that sounds highly impressive and original!

Honestly, retake the SATs and send them your most recent/best ones (if they’ll accept the new scores). Good luck!

I would advise that you stop dwelling on the past - what has already been decided. Instead, start being proactive; perhaps expressing your interest in NU in the form of a letter would be a good idea (however I would advise that you not question why NU chose to defer you or compare yourself to your fellow classmates in the letter) - simply mention the steps you have taken that demonstrate your interest in NU and highlight the new, impressive feats you have accomplished from here to the RD decision date.

Retaking the SATs - if at all possible - may also be a good idea. Continue to excel in your classes. In essence, between here and the RD deadline, do something impressive - whether it be in SATs, grades, EC’s, etc - and let NU know about it. (Note that your EC’s - being in 4 clubs - is not really impressive; however, I do think that your sailing/ life-guarding seems like a passion/ extreme interest - pursue that).

Realize that we are simply students, not NU’s admission officers. We cannot explain to you why you were deferred or “guess” your chances of being accepted RD. Thus, we all have a range of opinions - from being “overqualified” to “match” to being scaled as “low 25%” - but worry only now about what you can do now to improve your chances for the RD decision.

Best of luck!

Also, if you want scholarship, I would really think that you would have to retake the SATs or ACTs to be the top 25%/ competetive.

00000001, I just took a look at your profile again and noticed the reason you got deferred. Your SAT score is below the 25 percentile mark for Northeastern (it’s a 1850). Retake them.

for 40 points…I honestly don’t think I would do any better if I retook them, I would most likely do worse. I am not a great standardized test taker… however, I did not think that they would be this much of a hindrance.

I am going to write them a letter, call them, and send them all of my new information with ECs; but I don’t think taking my SATs again would help me.

And, I would think that my grades would overshadow a deficient 40 points…hopefully for RD.

If you retry the SATs, perhaps you have nothing to loose (except the $ and a Saturday morning and the study time). NEU already has your scores. So if you do worse, they won’t see them. Other more savvy CC’ers, please correct me if this is wrong.

i agree with coloradomom

If I were in your exact position, I would practice, practice, practice for the SATs and retake them - but only retake them if you are motivated to increase your points and devoted to practicing.

I think your low SAT score is the most significant thing dragging down your application. Boosting your SAT’s to a 1900 would just look better.

But who knows…
Perhaps even without retaking the SATs, you may be accepted for RD; you seem to be a “match,” but this is never a guarantee. If you want scholarship, you definately should retake the SATs and score higher.

Anyhow, good luck~

If I was to take the SAT again I would do much worse, I know it…but a 31 in Math = 710 SAT and I just sent that score and I got a 29 in English = 700 SAT so, hopefully that will be a positive factor…

i would retake the SAT and try to improve my math and CR scores… when taking the test dont even focus on the writing. just focus on those 2. cause i think your writing score is good enough.

I don;t think I am going to take them again, but I am going to be really proactive in letting NEU know that they are my first choice. Additionally, with the course load I am taking this semester and second semester, hopefully they will see that I am really pushing myself to the limit.

that should help

calm. lol. calm, as a current NU student I just have to say, theres not much you can really do besides retake the SATs.

You seem frantic over something you cannot control anymore, its out of your hands pretty much. If you get in, you get in.

We are taking you word that your essay was good, and your extra curricular was too, however it might not seem that way to admissions.

All you can do is wait and see, you can’t ever compare yourself to someone else because you don’t have the same essay as them, the same activities.
You can’t assume that because you are a minority in the field you are a shoo-in, because remember: Admission Counselors everywhere are insane.

Well, just calm down, you weren’t rejected, just differed.

If you call Admissions, try not to argue with them, don’t bring up that you are better than the people who got in, it does not show maturity which will have a detriment on your application. If you bother them too much it will also have a detriment. You have to be polite, and careful.
