Will an Academic Renewal Petition increase my GPA?

Hello,

I'm currently attending a Community college in California, & my goal is to transfer to a California State University (CSULB, SJSU, or Cal Poly). I started CC in 2010 and took some courses, but I started working & did not go to class anymore so I slacked off. I was an idiot and did not drop these classes. Unfortunately, I received 4 F's. As of 2012 I started working harder and have completed 37.5 units, but my gpa is at 2.0 because of these F's that I had received. I heard about Academic Renewal at my local CC:

Any substandard course work (i.e., D+, D, D-, F, and NP) which is not reflective of the student's current demonstrated scholastic ability may be alleviated and disregarded in the computation of the grade point average under the following conditions:
A period of at least one year must have elapsed since the work to be alleviated was completed; and A student seeking alleviation must have met one of the unit/grades benchmarks listed below:
Completed 9 units of course work with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5
15 units of course work with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0
21 units of course work with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5
24 units of course work with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0

The academic renewal policy may be applied when alleviation of prior course work is necessary to qualify a student for financial aid or admission to a program or transfer to another institution or for completion of certificate or degree.

Do you think its possible I can drop these 4 F's (courses of 2010 & 2011) for a higher gpa? I really want to start applying to Cal State colleges for Fall of 2015 like Cal Poly, CSULB, and SJSU but Its hard with this low gpa. If I have a 2.0 right now & drop these 4 F'S, what would my gpa be after that?

Thanks!

bump

I cannot calculate your GPA because I don’t know how many units each of those courses were worth. Academic Renewal, by definition, means that they would not count towards your GPA. The grades are just be on your transcript notated as AR’d.

Yes, of course the academic renewal will improve your GPA, and it sounds like you qualify for it. I have had academic renewal done for three terms, and it allowed me to get into the UCs. It is pretty simple to figure out what your GPA will be, but the easiest way is just to use one of the online GPA calculators (although it’s pretty easy to do it on your own as well).

@music1990‌ do you think I will be eligible to apply to CSULB, SJSU, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo after i do the renewal and have a chance at those schools?

by the way I want to get into the business program

It depends on what your GPA will be after academic renewal, but I don’t think it will be too difficult. You aren’t considering any of the UCs?

Here is how you figure out what your GPA will be.

For every class, take the amount of units, and multiply by the grade you got (for example, B=3.0, A=4.0). So if you got an A in a 5 unit class, you would have 4 times 5 =20. Then you add up the numbers you get for all your classes. Finally, you divide by the total amount of units you have taken. So if you got an A in a 5 unit class, and a B in a 2 unit class, you would have: (5 times 4.0) + (2 times 3.0) then divide all that by 7, the total amount of units from all your classes.

@music1990‌ If i did it right then i should have 2.5 if take off 3 F’s with academic renewal, and 2.7 If i take 4 F’s…

And I haven’t really considered UC’s because of my gpa… However, I would really like to go to UCSB or UC Irvine.

Here, tell me the grades you got, along with the amount of units for each class, and I will check for you. If you could get your GPA up to 3.2 you could tag to UCSB. I forget what it is for Irvine.

If you get rid of that D as well, you would have a 3.23931, which puts you in the UCSB TAG range.

How long ago did you get the D?

And with the D, you have a 3.029375.

@music1990‌ Unfortunately I received that D in spring of 2014… so i cannot do anything about that… I would really like to transfer by next fall of 2015. Do you think I can apply? Will i have a chance at csulb, cal poly SLO, UCSB, or UC Davis?

I’m not precisely sure how selective csulb or cal poly SLO are, so I couldn’t tell you. I think you would have an outside chance for UC Davis and UCSB.

I know waiting an extra year isn’t very enticing, but if you did, you would be able to TAG to UCSB, Davis, or Irvine. But yeah I understand how you feel. I graduated high school in 2009 and am just now transferring, so I am familiar with that feeling of wanting to move on. You might as well take a shot at applying this fall, but if you don’t get into the schools you want, know that next year you will be much more competitive.

@music1990‌ yeah, I graduated high school in 2010, so a year after you and I already want to transfer! I think I would like to apply to Cal Poly, CSULB, and UCSB for now just to see if I have a chance. What college are you transferring to?

Yeah I know the feeling! Give it a shot and see what happens. But if not this year, I’m confident you will get into some of those schools next year, as long as you keep getting good grades like you are now. But who knows, you could get into some of those schools this year too, it’s hard to tell.

I’m transferring to Berkeley, but for music, which isn’t as competitive as majors like business. But my first three attempts at community college ended in all Fs. It wasn’t until last year that I turned everything around, thanks to academic renewal. Without academic renewal, I wouldn’t be transferring anywhere. It’s kind of a lifesaver.

@music1990

Actually I have another F…
HIST 201 U.S. History through 1877 F 3 units from 2011… But im planning to retake this one next semester… can I still put that under academic renewal and retake it? will that work?

Congrats on being accepted to Berkeley by the way. :D

Thanks!

Well retaking it is different than academic renewal. With academic renewal, you don’t have to retake it. I’m not entirely sure how retaking it works, but I think you could do that too. You could probably retake it and get academic renewal for it if you really wanted, but I don’t think doing both would be necessary. I would definitely talk to a counselor about that. Do you have an appointment to talk to one? They will help you fill out the form for academic renewal too.
