Will my writing score prevent me from getting into Brown?

On the SAT, I got a 740 CR, 790 M, and 650 W. Should I retake the entire SAT if I want to get in to Brown? And I still have to take Subject Tests. The next test dates are October 6th, November 3rd, and December 1st. When do I need to apply by so I know when to take my SATs?

You can if you want, but I personally wouldn’t bother. I had a similar breakdown of scores and AP scores, application essays, and recs from someone like an English teacher would more than compensate.

The SAT writing portion, in my opinion, is a very poor indicator of critical thinking and analysis skills via writing.

I agree with SS. As long as your grades/recs don’t show a similar issue with writing, you’re fine. If your English grades aren’t as strong, then you might want to consider retaking.

As to your second question, I believe all of those SAT II dates will work if you’re planning on applying RD. I bet you can find a concrete answer on the Brown admissions page.

Oh, alright. Well my English grades are pretty good so I hope it’s okay. If I take it again, will I have to show them both scores or will they only consider the highest scores?

It depends on the schools you’re applying to. For ivys, you need to send all of them.

That’s not true, brisky. The admissions FAQ site says this:

OP, if you think you can do better and you’d like to take it again, go for it. But my scores were even more lopsided than yours (even after taking it three times…) and it worked out.

brisky, the Score Choice option isn’t the same for every Ivy League school.
