When applying to William and Mary as an incoming sophomore for Fall 2013, would it be detrimental to have a high school teacher fill out our Teacher Evaluation Form instead of a college professor? I just don’t feel like any of my professors would know the info required well enough to represent me as well as a teacher that I had every day for 4 years. However, I don’t want it to look bad that I didn’t use a college professor. How highly considered is that?

Also, if all of the classes we took this year were all things that would count for a considerable amount of my Gen Eds at William and Mary (biology, geology, anthropology, english, sociology, language, etc). Would it look awful to have taken one class that is pretty much guaranteed not to transfer or count for anything, just because it was based on one of our biggest passions and we knew it was the only chance we’d ever have to take that class?

Additionally, if we are applying using a Reopen Application Form, do we need to also submit the supplementary forms listed on the Common App even though they aren’t listed on the Reopen form? (College Official’s Report, Instructor Evaluation, Midterm Report, School Report)?

@audrey1212, we’d really prefer a letter from a college professor but all letters are optional for transfers. If you’re currently a college freshman and using the Reopen, does that mean you applied for freshmen admission? If that’s the case, we’ll have your high school teacher recs from your original application.

Taking one elective course is certainly not a big deal.

If using a Reopen app you just need to send that, the app fee, an updated transcript and the mid-term report.

Thank you so much for the speedy reply. I have one last question, when applying with the re-open application, how should we pay the $70 fee? Would you prefer us to mail a check, cash, or should we go into the CommonApp and pay there even though thats not the application we’re using?

@audrey212, if using the Re-Open application you can only pay by check. Putting cash in the mail is never a good idea and since that application isn’t through Common App you can’t use that.

Hello,
I have a question about the short answer portion of the W&M supplement. The first prompt says “Unless already discussed in your personal statement,…” Is the personal statement mentioned here the essay on the common application? Or is this a separate statement we must provide? Also, is there any word or character limit on either of the prompts? Thank you in advance

@Yoshi45, the personal statement is the same as the Common Application essay. There is no specific word limit but 500 words or less is a good target.

Hi!
I applied to W&M last year (my senior year in high school) and got in as a Monroe Scholar, yet by some lack of judgement I chose to attend somewhere else and it was a huge mistake! I am now applying to transfer with the Reopen Application.
Do I need any additional letters of recommendation or will the college just look at the ones I submitted from high school?
Also, I am concerned, if I were to get in, how life would be as a transfer. Are transfers generally happy? I am worried about feeling out of the loop for the next three years of college.
Thank you!

@musicalme, letters of recommendation are optional for transfers. We still have the ones that were part of your original application but if you wish to send one from the the college you currently attend you can.

We’ll let current transfers answer your other questions but we do have an extensive transfer orientation process to help our transfer students acclimate to campus and as long as you’re proactive about getting involved and meeting people, you should easily transition to our community.

Thank you for the reply. I’d also like to know, I am applying as an international student from Japan, and for the Supplemental International Form, it says that I must have this typed and sent, but there are a few spaces where the information I enter does not fit and cuts off when the form is printed out. This includes the spaces for my e-mail address and the postal code. Japanese postal code is longer than 5-digits.
Are we allowed to write out the missing portions or handwrite the entire form?

@Yoshi, no worries if those two fields get cut of on the International supplements. They will already be in the actual Common App itself which is where we get that data from.

musicalme, my son is a spring transfer this semester, having completed 3 semesters at another fine institution. He almost chose W&M his senior year, so he (like you) was very familiar with it already. Like W&M mentioned, there is a very extensive transfer orientation. My son is already at home at W&M and involved in the community. He did have a professor that he connected with at his first school write a letter of rec for him.

Hello. For a transfer student, is the BA/MPP program available?
I am also wondering if you can only declare BA for Public Policy and not go into MPP program.

@kafkaisalone, yes, transfers can absolutely major in public policy and get the BA. As for the five year program, we believe that’s open to transfers also but that would be a good question for that department since it runs admission to that program.

I completed my transfer app this past week and just realized I did not provide a secondary school report. I did not for any of the schools I applied to actually. I have never used Common App and did not realize I needed to until i submitted it and it notified me. I am confused though because it never mentioned it on the W&M page (or any other school webpages for that matter) which is what Ive been following throughout the process. Can someone clear this up for me? W&M is my 1st choice so I really hope I am still eligible for admission

@ThanksinAdvance, while we require a high school transcript for transfer applications we do not require the secondary school report so you’re all good.

Hi I am applying as a second semester transfer sophomore for 2014. I was wondering if I am on the right track.

Extracurricular Activities:
I’ve held a part time job since I was 16 years old. (The last three years)
Elected to Senate
Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor’s society. (NOT A FRAT)
I was awarded a merit based scholar ship in from high school.
And, I received the Dr. Randi Koeske scholarship! This was awarded to me for, and I’m not exaggerating, being among the top 3 best psychology students at the University. (I was voted on by 5 PhDs. I don’t know if I am the “best” but I won this for being among the best. I was not able to go in person because I was working.)
I am also submitting an art supplement, and I’m going to play the hell out of my piano.

High School: Was not so good.

Is there anything I should work on or do to improve this aside from raising my GPA? And, are there any classes I should take or anything else to improve this?
