William & Mary Fall 2011 Transfer Thread

W&M Admission- You say that students will be able to access the housing application in April, but I thought transfer students didn’t here back about their decision until the beginning of May?

soychai, there is no quota for incoming sophomores vs incoming juniors. We do note a transfer’s current class because that lets us know how much college course work they’ve had so far and that helps us in our review process but we don’t admit only X amount of one class and y amount of another.

McBrainTrain, transfers hear towards the end of April (usually the last week in April). The housing application becomes available shortly thereafter. It could be May that it becomes available…it just depends on when decisions are released

not sure if you would know this yet, or if you can tell, but about how many applications did you get for next semester?
Also is there a possibility decisions will be out earlier than april 30? I guess that depends of the number of applicants though…

soychai, we have just over 900 applicants for the fall semester which is slighly up but fairly typical.

Unfortunately we do not know exactly when transfer decisions will be released so whether it’s before April 30 or not is unknown at this point. Decisions will likely be released right around April 30. As soon as a date is set we’ll let everyone know.

how many of those 900 applicants do you anticipate you’ll admit? a little less than half?

Correct. Generally we admit about 45% of the transfers who apply…give or take

I just faxed my midterm grades a few days ago, and I’m wondering if we’ll hear back from the admissions office so that we now they’ve been received? And if so, roughly when should be we hear back? I realize right now they have a million and a half papers and things to deal with, but seeing as our copy center can sometimes be a little unreliable, I just want to confirm so I can be sure they’ll be in by the due date.

Unfortunately we do not confirm receipt of mid-semester grades automatically. You can email admission@wm.edu and ask for confirmation (please include your W&M ID number included in the emails you received regarding receipt and completion of your app).

W&M Admissions, one of my professors put 89.5% as a grade for my mid term report. Is that okay? I’m not really sure why he put that and not a B+ or an A-. How will you view that?

do decisions generally come out on certain days? Like Friday? I know they won’t be out for a little while, but I’m just anxious!

surfwakesnow, we’ll view it as a B+/A-. It certainly won’t be viewed poorly. A number grade is just as fine as a letter grade.

McBainTrain, no there’s no specific day when we release decisions. We just release them once Committee concludes and the emails can be generated. It should be the last week of April and once decisions are released we’ll be sure to broadcast it on our website, blog, social media outlets and CC.

Thank you W&M Admissions for your quick and thoughtful responses! It really is great that you’re here to answer all of our questions. Now, I have two more.

1.) I have become more involved on campus, specifically I now am the treasurer of 2 clubs and have joined another club sport. I also have been nominated for a prestigious scholars program at my college. Should I let the admissions office know this?

2.) If I am not admitted for fall 2011, would it be more advisable for me to go to my current school or attend a community college in VA (I live in MD, but live close enough to the border) and apply again under an articulation agreement. I hope that this does not even have to be considered come May 1, but I figured I should give it some thought :p

Thank you for answering all those questions, but i still have a few questions.
Is there a way to retrieve the information from commonapp from before? I do not have a full list of what my EC during high school.
What is the average applicants for the Spring semester? I was unable to apply to transfer for Fall 2011 because I had only 14 credits, while it is noted that 15 credits is needed.
Why is it on the website, say that there are only 200 transfers for fall and 80 for the spring?
Will skipping one semester of applying to transfer look any different than applying to every semester that I can possibly apply for?
Because it was stated that constantly applying will make it look as though we really want to go into the college.
Are approximations for volunteer hours okay? I dont have an exact number anymore.
If i were to state in an essay that i would like to bring some more culture and a really large organization started in the campus will that looked favorably upon?
I was planing on creating an asian music group to introduce and to show many more asian music that is really being hilighted in the asian countries.
Also, it seems as though there is no PIRG in the area so I really wanted to try to get PIRG set-up in the area.
I heard that having positive trends in GPA will also be looked positively on as good work ethics, is this true?

So with all that said I would like to introduce the information that I know.
My high school GPA is not a good GPA, but it does show a good trend of increasing greatly starting freshman to senior year. (example, in freshman year i believe ihad around a 3.0, sophomore 3.3, junior 3.5, senior, 3.8)
Im not sure on the exact GPA values for each year but thats how the trend is. I took 5 AP classes total.
Clubs/organizations: in school are not all too great.
Model UN, spanish club, latin club, key club for two years.
Asian association for four years and VP senior year.
Life during high school and before:
Science Fair: I only went to one science fair and i received 2nd in the county and 1st in regionals.

Music: I have played piano for 12 years. The first lions competition that i had been to I was supposed to receive 3rd place, but they decided that the 30 people in the competition was not enough people to be giving out a 3rd place. Thus, they onyl gave out 1st and 2nd place.
After that thought, I never went to a competition. I have played piano in an orchestra for a year.
I have also played guitar for four years and a vocalist for two years.

Work: I tutor normally in math for those in middle school and above (prealg up to Calculus). I also teach in piano and vocals for beginners. I will be tutoring at the English Math Academy during the Summer for Prelag to Precalc.

Volunteering: I have volunteered in many different ways.
Church - 300 hours approximate for sunday school and Vacation bible school.
Hospital - 150 hours approximate
Piano groups and orchestra - 50 hours approximate, setting up places to play for recitals, also getting areas set up for the orchestra to play in public.
Leadership program - 15 hours of volunterring during the leadership program (LTSC).

I have been in UMD:CP’s LTSC leadership program. Also I have been to Brown university for summer school.

College:
1st semester 14 credits, 3.59 gpa (not good gpa)
I took bmgt220 (accounting1) Econ200 and 201 (micro/macro economics) and math140 (calculus1)
Currently I am taking 16 credits at UMD:CP
EDCI280 (looking into classrooms [teaching elementary and middle schools])
AAST398M (asian american studies)
Engl101 (academic writing)
hist156 (us history 1)
Phys102/103 (physics of music/with lab)

During the summer I will be taking (at a CC):
Math141 (calc2) and bmgt221 (accounting2)

I am a resident of VA. Because I could not apply to transfer for the Fall2011, I will be taking classes at UMD:CP
The classes that are in mind are; multivariable calc, physics (not sure), business statistics, chinese language or korean language, music culture of the world, and hopefully a music performance class.
Do those seem like a good choice of classes to be taking for transfering into W&M?

I know this post is long, thank you if you do read over this.

surfwakesnow, you can update your application with the new information by email Associate Dean Kim Van Deusen at kim@wm.edu and ask that the new information be added to your file.

If you’re not admitted for Fall 2011, we suggest you contact Dean Van Deusen and ask what the best path to pursue is for making yourself more competitive. Keep in mind that our articulation agreements with Virginia Community Colleges require an associates degree and 45 credits to be earned at the VA Community college so that may not be the best path for you to pursue.

suchan, we’ll do our best to address all of your questions.

We don’t believe you can retrieve old applications from Common App but you can contact Common App to ask at help@commonapp.org

There is no credit minimum for transferring. Students can apply to transfer once they’ve taken college courses after high school graduation. Not sure what you mean by average applicant for the spring semester but our spring transfer applicant pool, while smaller, is very similar to our fall applicant pool in terms of credentials.

The numbers you see on the web site are how many transfer students enter W&M (200 new transfers come to campus in the fall and 80 in the spring). They are selected from applicant pools of about 900 (fall) and 250 (spring). We admit about 45% of those who apply (so about 400 for fall and 100 for spring) and about 200 (fall) and 80 (spring) of those students enroll.

When you apply to transfer is up to you. Not applying for Fall 2011 won’t hurt you. It wasn’t stated that constantly applying makes it look like you want to attend more. It was simply stated that we appreciate students who do want to attend W&M and who work to make themselves competitive even if that means submitting a few applications.

We don’t require volunteer hours for an application so if you’re reporting them as part of an extracurricular activity resume you can estimate them.

The transfer application asks you why you wish to transfer to W&M so you can certainly share how you hope to impact our campus in that essay.

Positive grade trends are viewed in a more positive way than downward trends of course but we also have students who have consistently done well that you may be competing against.

The classes you are taking/plan to take look strong and a 3.59 GPA first semester in college is good also. If you plan on applying for Spring 2012 consider attending a Prospective Transfer Day in the fall to learn more about the process

W&M Admission–

I’m faxing my midterm grade report this afternoon. Last semester i received a 4.0. My current grades are as follows:

global economics and world politics 2064-94
Biology 1006:94
Spanish 3414, Modern Peninsular Culture & Literature: 95
Microeconomics 2005: 89
Art History 2386: 82

I did pretty poorly on my first Art History exam, but I have continued to do better since and I am pulling it up. My question is whether I should attach a letter explaining my B-, or if this is unneeded…

I understand this is last minute so no problem if you don’t answer in time.

thanks.

If you wish to include a brief explanation of the lower grade in Art History you are welcome to do so. A letter isn’t necessary. Likely a short paragraph attached to your mid-term grade report will suffice.

W&M Admission,

I’m wondering if you can let me know how my courses look so far as a prospective transfer student. This may seem somewhat irrelevant considering I have already applied, but I’m sending requests for next fall’s courses shortly and I want to make sure I am on the right track if I am not offered admission for fall 2011. I am currently a Freshman at Virginia Tech on track to double major in Spanish and International Studies.

Fall 2010:
IS 2054 Introduction to World Politics
PSCI 1014H: Honors Introduction to US Gov and Politics
SPAN 3304: Introduction to Hispanic Literature (I placed into this course with IBHL Spanish score of 6 and a placement test)
MATH 1016: Elementary Calculus with Trig
BIO 1005: General Biology

Spring 2011:
IS 2064: Global Econ and World Politics
ECON 2005: Principles of Microeconomics
SPAN 3414: Modern Peninsular Culture and Literature
ART 2386: Survey of the History of Western Art
BIO 1006: General Biology

(I placed out of English at Tech with a 5 on my IBHL exam)

thanks.

I’m curious as to why the transfer app. doesn’t ask about your ec’s from freshman and sophomore year in hs. I know it may be a long time ago, but since I’m a second semester college freshman you see all my grades from hs. Just wondering why not my ec’s, because I did marching band those two years which sucked up time and probably would help my less than great grades for those two years. Is there any way this would matter if I emailed the dean about it?

i only talked about the activities i’m involved with in college on my app, because i figured they kept my application from last year when i applied. even if you didn’t apply last year, i don’t think they really care what you did at the beginning of high school (especially if you didn’t continue it)
