The current storm will be long gone. There is nothing in the long term forecast last I checked. But they can be wrong about tomorrow. The best advice might be to arrive as early as possible within what your travel schedule and budget allows. Good luck.

Oddly, the NWS is forecasting snow for Wednesday of this week in CT (where there hasn’t been much snow this winter compared to the south!!). However, for next weekend, there isn’t anything in the forecast right now…but that is a week away. Hopefully it will be fine. Just look out the window that morning to know the REAL weather:)

thumper1, when I look out the window that morning I’m likely to see sunny skies and a high of 74%!

The Oberlin audition weather thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/471216-anyone-miss-audition-oberlin-due-weather.html?highlight=audition

Unfortunately, audition season takes place in cold weather in many areas prone to snow.

anyone know about the Westminster Regionals at Interlochen Monday? They still on?

Nothing happening in Rochester or Cleveland, nor is it predicted to, so those who were here yesterday for Eastman and those heading to CIM for Monday are good to go. It’s cold though, so bundle up! Safe travels to all and good luck!
I grew up in SE PA- Bucks County- and I remember snow storms like the one today,as school was closed several times each winter. Up here, nothing stops the schools from opening! My D had two days in all of HS and my youngest, now in 10th grade, hasn’t had a snow day in more than six years!

As far as I can tell, WCC at Interlochen is on for Monday. My D will be auditioning.

Update: D got an email from the director of admissions at WCC. She can’t get a flight out of anywhere, so she will be contacting Interlochen to arrange another time, or do the auditions via Skype.

Not great news, though I’d rather it be this way, than my D stuck somewhere, or us losing lots of $ on airfare…

Do audition via Skype?? Wow, I wouldn’t think that a soprano voice would do well over skype. Those high notes are hard to capture right on any recorder :0 … Guess the admission folks would know that though.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. I’m figuring that WCC would have been videotaping the auditions anyway, accompanists are already set up, why not tape the auditions and send them the tape/dvd…At any rate, I’m sure they’ll figure it out. I’m just glad we aren’t the ones having to scramble around to work it out.

Just returned from Cincinnati CCM which I found out stands for College Conservatory of Music… anyway 5.5 hours there Thursday night, 10 hours/19 cars-jacknifed semis/1 six car pile up home to Chicago area. Not pretty. Great to get good wishes and support from CCers even if it was after the fact. CCM was saying they might have to cancel auditions on Saturday if school closed due to snow and would accept audition tape or reschedule date instead. Something to consider if auditioning on instrument. S did composition interview so not affected and we luckily were scheduled Friday. Still have Eastman, Manhatten, IU and Boston auditions left, so hoping we got the worst weather over. Just hoping. Glad to be alive too.

Brace yourselves, Eastern Confidentialnauts, Chicken Little 2 - The Sequel is about to start playing in your street, sidewalk, and local airport.

Somehow I managed to drive from Philadelphia to Cleveland and back between the two major snowstorms. There was almost no traffic, probably due to anxiety generated by all of the weather predictions. I feel lucky to have made plans to drive rather than fly after hearing battle stories from many travelers about canceled flights!

And go figure, Rochester and Boston were clear sailing this past weekend!

Just noticed this addendum to the NEC website audition page:

Please note that NEC typically proceeds with auditions as planned even during major snowstorms and even when NEC classes are cancelled. That being the case, we encourage applicants to make every effort to attend their scheduled audition date & time even when storms are forecast or occurring. If it is impossible to get to NEC due to flight cancellations, road closures, etc., please contact the Office of Admission at 617-585-1101 or admission@necmusic.edu.

Well…I bet at least one or two of you are facing this problem. The Northeast is expecting to get a ‘Paralyzing Blizzard’ on Thursday, leading into Friday. Nearly two feets of snow. Our news station called it the storm of the century. Right now, the estimated wind conditions are being described as like a hurricane.

I live right outside of Boston, and I have an audition Friday at Westminster and Saturday at Potsdam.

Basically, my parents just sat me down and told me they are not so sure about this. My dad says he is not comfortable putting our lives in danger to drive through this snow storm. Everywhere is saying DON’T DRIVE DON’T DRIVE STAY INDOORS! And we are going to pack our bags and my little brother and head out right in the thick of it?

So, what do you think? The schools have to understand… I wouldn’t be suprised if they were shut down themselves!

This, along with vocal problems and car troubles, seems to be a sign from God telling me not to travel right now.

Are there any snowdates that they could make up the audition with?

Call Westminster tomorrow and ask what the policy will be if they truly get a storm that shuts everything down. They are very accommodating generally. Do you have a CD or DVD ready? You must - as Purchase required a pre-screening. See if they will allow it if you absolutely can’t get in. They have a very high acceptance rate so you may have a good chance. I don’t think the high acceptance rate is indicative of the level of talent there. I think there is a high level of self-selection there. Then visit later and have a lesson or two. Have you visited the school?

I would wait a bit and see what develops. I’m in upstate NY and this is all going to depend on the conjunction of the three storms and near the Great Lakes, the winds. As of now, weather.com shows Boston as slated for <3", which isn’t going to hurt anything, and Princeton at 3-6".Potsdam will be the wild card, and the Lake Effect could garner them anything from 12" on up. In your place, I would look at things in the morning and then call the school, at least Crane, and see what they have to say. I’m sure they will make allowances, but ultimately, it’s a personal decision. I think your dad is right about driving through a major storm, if it does turn into that. No matter what happens along the coast, Potsdam is not going to be easy for you to get to-if what our weatherman just said comes true, driving to the Northcountry is out. Do you have a DVD ready to send out?
Again, the schools are there to help you and I would consult them. Good luck, Rose, and keep us posted!

The weather forecast has been updated for the northeast coastal areas. I don’t know about upstate NY, but Boston and NYC are no longer under a huge snow watch. It now looks like the storm will bring mostly rain and sleet, with only a bit of snow mixed in. Still quite unpleasant to travel in, but not like a major blizzard, at least in these areas. Inland may be different.

Good luck, and I agree that the schools are there to help you. No school wants families to feel as if they are taking their lives in their hands to come to an audition.

SRose: Live from Northern NY (about 1.5 hrs. SW of Potsdam)- the early a.m. weather report made it sound like Thursday into Friday will be the worst time here, with only snow “showers” on Saturday. You can check the “local” reports here:
