Winter Storm

We’re flying from charlotte to boston tomorrow. In looking at the weather, it appears that it’s going to be warm enough that they will just have rain. Worst aspect is that as the day wears on, the wind is going to get tougher.

I live in the Boston area and the current forecasts are calling for strictly rain in the Boston area. Logan airport may slow down a bit but it doesn’t usually close for this type of weather. Good luck!

It’s not Boston I’m worried about – it’s the drive to Potsdam. We would be going through Syracuse, Scranton, and Canton… All which are being hit pretty hard, according to online. Our car is not very big, nor very stable. If there are 50 plus mph winds and pouring snow/sleet, do we want to be in the car for 8 hours?

I have a feeling my father is going to be immovable on this. Unfortunately, I do not have a DVD and would not be able to make one. Perhaps I can still get down to New Jersey, but Crane may be out of the running.

Hi, Sopranorose. We share your pain! We are in southern NH and D has audition at Ithaca Sat. I called to ask about sending DVD, CD or whatever…no go. They will be open no matter what. Basically, it was “too bad, so sad- this is the last auditon date - if she wants, she could call admissions and tell them she is interested in a different program”!!!
Yes, it seems to us that this is an omen as well.

It looks to me like there might be an opening to drive starting late this afternoon…but the weather conditions will be very iffy through the Berkshires…

Auditions are during the winter typically. We were very lucky that DS’s school understood his audition schedule needs. We PLANNED to arrive at every audition destination the day before the actual audition. And yes…we did hit the snow a couple of times…but by having that day early buffer, he didn’t miss a single audition.

Sopranorose, just out of curiosity the route you are listing is pretty out of the way for a trip from Boston to Potsdam, sounds like the GPS route. (90 to 81N to 11W). The more efficient route would be taking 87N from Albany and cutting across. Also, they handle snow up in the North Country pretty efficiently, if you took say 87 North to 11 East up near Plattsburgh it would probably be cleared by Friday afternoon (that’s not the quickest route but it does keep you on pretty well used roads). That’s neither here nor there though. I would call Potsdam and tell them your dilemma, They may be able to reschedule you during the week.

Yes, thumper1, we planned to arrive a day early, too. And in fact, we left this whole week open for what will be our longest drive. (It’s vacation.) Nevertheless, unless we had left on Mon., we would not have had clear sailing…And on Mon. they had not forecast all these storms. So even the best laid plans do not always work out, and it would be nice if the schools were more understanding of this- especially BECAUSE the auditions are in the winter and a lot of these places frequently have bad winter weather.

This is why we ended up staying over an extra day a couple of weeks ago. Having done that, I would have appreciated it if the predicted blizzard had actually occurred… there has to be a better way for colleges to organize this process!

sopranorose, why don’t you take the train from Boston to Princeton? It will get you there with no worries about the car, and fewer about the weather. You can change to NJTransit from Amtrak at Penn Station. NJTransit/Northeast Corridor will take you into Princeton Junction, then catch spur into Princeton, cab to Westminster.

Sagiter- have you actually driven that route? Just curious because you are proposing sending her thru the mountains, and over some very hilly, windy, slow 2 lane roads under good conditions. 81N to 11 (north of Watertown), while not always a fun winter drive, is more direct, and open, flat and usually well plowed. I think I would opt for the road more traveled!

Unfortunately I have driven every route to Potsdam over the past two years and in every season including winter and through an ice storm for his audition.

The route I’m suggesting is not a mountain route the mountain route is through long lake and tupper lake. The route I’m suggesting is for going from Boston to Potsdam using 93 North to 89 North to 87N to Plattsburgh and then Route 11 West to Potsdam These are all interstate routes. This route is appx 390 miles. 81 North is no bigger a road than any of those listed and then Route 11 is Route 11 whether you take it east from Watertown or West from Plattsburgh. The route to Syracuse and Watertown is 453 miles way longer and less direct.

If the trip actually starts in Southern Jersey at Princeton then the I81 route is definitely the way to go and then all I have to say is never-mind :-))

Oh yeah, I’m heading up March 4th to see DS perform and then take him home for the week hope all this is over by then…

OK I guess they are talking about going from Westminster straight to Potsdam. If I had to do that the route her dad proposed is the best.

NEVER-MIND !!

Well, due to the ‘impending weather forecast’, Westminster just cancelled all their auditions. So that’s a bit helpful. Now we just have to struggle to Potsdam. There’s several reschedule auditions they have posted, so I will be able to do one of those.

SRose: best of luck with your travel. It’s so hard to plan this time of year!
Sagiter: I feel your travel pain! I have to drive 450 miles to MI to see my D. And, did not mean to imply that you didn’t know where you were going!

I did not take it that way musmom2.

Tomorrow we are headed to Washington DC so my daughter can play for an IU professor who was not able to attend her audition. He kindly suggested she play for him on the east coast (although he also says his studio is full, but we wants to hear us.) That spares us from flying back to Bloomington, except, I wonder, if is studio is indeed full then should we fly to Bloomington, anyway? So it’s a 3-hour drive to DC, then play for him on Saturday morning, then drive to NYC, about 5 hours because her MSM audition is 9 AM Sunday morning. Weather gods, please be kind.

I wouldn’t count on 5 hours from DC to NYC on Saturday, The weather is supposed to suck in NJ and NY until Sunday afternoon. Check the weather reports as the weekend approaches.

Take Amtrak from DC to NYC. Do you live closer to DC than NYC? If so, leave your car in DC, take train to NYC and back…train ticket will pay for itself with what you save on tolls and parking! Break a leg!

We live in Philadelphia. Driving from Philly to DC tomorrow, then to NYC on Saturday. :frowning: We don’t really have a choice in terms of checking the weather-- and Amtrak is both prohibitively expensive and somewhat unreliable.

I spent more than 6 hours waiting in La Guardia today for a flight to Indianapolis… sigh. At least I made it! Was half expecting not to. It means that I won’t get to see any orchestra rehearsals here, but oh well. I think considering the 1,100 flights cancelled in the NYC area today, I’m lucky to have made it out. The things we do for music.
