Hi!!
I am admitted student to college of arts, science, and engineering. I was wondering if anyone know what the differences is between dean's scholarship and rush rhee.

I saw on the brochure that rush rhee ranges from 5000 to 10000, i got 8000 from deans. Does anyone know the criteria for recieving these awards? (I am wondering if deans scholarship is need-based, cuz i kinda need more... and rumors has it that need-based scholarships can be raised)

On another note... Hi!! i am from LI, NY (anyone else from there??) Can any current students tell me what the membership fees for clubs are around? (the Taiwanese Student Association in particluar)
Thank you for your time and patience

Dean's Scholarship, like Rush Rhees, is not based on need. They're both merit, but I'm not sure what the difference is in how they are awarded.

You can raise the amount of merit aid... sometimes. I was originally offered $10,000 for Rush Rhees plus $2,000 for National Merit and appealed for an extra $4,000-$5,000 since I needed more too. They gave me another $3,000 in Dean's Scholarship, still merit-based, so it is possible to raise your merit aid as well.

Whether you want more merit-based or more need-based aid, though, you need to file a written appeal. Call the fin aid office and have them explain it to you if that's what you want to do.

You should contact the Taiwanse Students Association with regard to membership fees. Nice to meet you btw, guess I won't be the only Taiwanese in the Class of 2009, but I still have my unique Taiwanese South African status.

I think i know a 2009er who is from Taiwan and South Africa too, go figure.

Well, I've posted on the Rochester 2009 forum. The 2009er you speak of is probably me.

Does Rochester ever give as much merit aid as $30,000/year? Does Rochester reject applicants because of their financial circumstances?

Rochester is blind to the financial needs when making your decision for acceptance. They accept people solely on their academic standing and statistics, in the first round. THEN, after that first round where you are either accepted/rejected/waitlisted, they do another round where you are individually analyzed for financial oppurtunities from the University. Apparently "if you were accepted you passed a great hurdle, and then consider yourself a really strong applicant if you were reviewed for scholarships and received them." Thats what the adcom said at Rochester.

Thanks KhAn_T1m

I forgot to mention I'm an international student. How generous is Rochester to international students?

sorry, I dont really know much about international students. I bet if you were a strong candidate , no matter where you really live , they'll be willing to pay a pretty penny to bring you here ;)

UR will not grant international students with more than $10000 in financial aid. I got $8000.

Oh my lord, is that so?

When I asked them, they said something really ambiguous like they'll assess on "individual basis," and that "there's no limit."

So did they meet your need PanzerRon?

I suppose so, I'm going there.

My bad. International students get 0 financial aid. They can get merit-based scholarships which will not exceed $10000.

What's the name of the scholarship they gave you?

Rochester International Scholarship.
