Withholding AP Scores for more class credit

I was thinking of withholding my scores for AP Chemistry (4), and possibly AP Biology (didn't receive the score yet, but most likely a 4 or 5). I plan on taking Chem 6A, no honors, because I've heard that it's more practical for MCAT preparation. However, my AP chem score won't let me take that class for credit, so I would probably have to take more classes first quarter to fulfill the minimum 12 credit requirement. I only have until June 15th to send a fax to College Board.

I plan on withholding my biology score, because I want to take the easier lower division bio classes for credit as well. I know that GPA is very important for pre-med students, so I want to take easier classes to boost my GPA and to refresh my memory of the subjects. I don't want to go into college my first quarter with a super difficult schedule.

I also plan on majoring in Human Biology, and I may also be taking Math 10c or 20c (since I have to submit my AP Calc BC score for the math requirement) and maybe Warren Writing? I'm not exactly sure yet.

I am in the same boat as you but I called in and they said if you reported your AP scores on your UC application you can be rescinded for withholding your scores.

Probably not the case if you took the AP exam in 2012 though. You could’ve sent a copy of your 2011 scores alone.

This seems more like an admin question that you should actually call the school for, you’ll get more accurate and definite answers through that.

refreshe4 is probably right but doesn’t it seem stupid that submitting our AP scores is required? Since we are not required to take the APs at all, it seems like it should be our own choice whether to submit them. I got a 3 on CalcAB and it gave me two units of credit. Since I had to take the Calc 20 series for my major, I did the whole of Calc20A for only half the credit that everyone else in the class got and it now shows on my transcripts as 10A instead of 20A. Totally messed up. I think taking the exam in the first place was a mistake. In my opinion, they should abandon the AP system and instead let students test through the lower division pre-requirements that they want to challenge.

Marginally related question, but does the request to withhold scores have to be handwritten? (I’m asking because the collegeboard website says that I have to send a “signed, written” request. Does that “signed, written” mean handwritten?)

And for the signature, does it have to be my full name? Because I only put the first letter of my first name in my signature.

If you listed it on your UC application, they’ll expect to see the scores. If you really want to take the class again, feel free to fail the actual exam.

Either way, you’ll find other aspects of your four years to be far more challenging than the distinction between 6A v. 6B. More important to be ahead of your fellow pre-XYZ’s so you can schedule before them.
