can someone tell me if you are aiming for HYP, do you have to take AP lang or Literature? IN my sons school AP lang is required for AP Lit. we are worried that the college will think negatively, He will have 10-11 AP by the end of senior year. He is just not so interested in this subject but likes Latin and will take latin AP virgil in May. Any opinions? thanks

Absolutely no! There's not a single course that you "have to" take to get into an Ivy League, nor would taking/not taking a course make the college think negatively (well, generally speaking). 10-11 APs are amazing --> I know people with 0 APs that got in, but I also know those with 8-9 who didn't.

Good luck

From experience, I agree with lubinli. I took only two years of foreign language due to other interests and schedule problems and had no problems.

However, I'd caution against not skipping english any of your years. It doesn't have to be AP, but it is essential to have four solid years if your school offers them (and, from the sound of it, yours does.)

I'd agree that it's not a barrier to getting into school, but keep in mind that the main advantage of having taken the 2 English APs is getting to place out of the beginning courses in many schools. (I don't know if HYP does that, but I assume they allow placement, even if they don't give college credit for APs).

thanks everyone for your opinion!! he will have four solid english. I was just concerned that if you are a science person wanting to go in to that field you should take as many science oriented APs and if you are a humanitarian side that you should take AP english. My son is interested in Many foreign languages and does well in it and especially very interested in Latin and greek studies and wants to continue to study this in college ( may want to go in to classics) so I was concerned that by not taking AP english will it hurt his chances at HYP when he applies with showing interest in majoring classics? By the time he graduate he will have
Euro AP, US hx AP, Phsycology AP, Chinese AP, Latin virgil AP, Micro and Macro AP, Statistics AP, Cal AB and BC, Pysics AP,

Is it ok not to take AP english even if your might major in Classics?? thank you

It is under my impression that colleges look for students who show an immense amount of dedication to a particular field of study. By not taking AP English your son will not be viewed negatively in the eyes of an admissions officer. Furthermore, 10-11 APs are more than enough to impress an officer. (Also getting straight fives in all of them will be even more impressive) Keep in mind that HYP does not cater to a specific type of person and that results are often unpredictable. Just a sidenote, how will not taking AP English affect someone wishing to major in Classics? The only thing I think of is the writing skills but if your son is a contender for admissions to HYP I'm sure he has already honed the necessary skills. Good luck next year!

thanks Yoshi for your reply. Just thought AP English(Lang and Lit) and classic major somewhat intermingled? Thank you again!
