Words from W&M Admission: News and Updates for the 2012-2013 academic year

Would getting a post card make you more likely to get a scholarship? Are they the only ones that get scholarships?

@beautifulchick95, we have a fairly limited number of scholarships (about 50 students in each class have scholarships that include tuition dollars, another 80-90 enter with our Monroe Scholarship honors program) and we send postcards to 1200-1500 students so we send to far more than who will receive a scholarship. Plus we will continue to review students for merit awards even after we’re done sending postcards.

first off, major kudos to you for being the hands-down most accessible, friendly admit comm of the 20+ schools I am looking at.

are there any scholarships (in addition to the ones you listed above) that reduce tuition for OOS to closer to in state? are there many of these if so?

thank you.

@choices222, this page describes each of our scholarships ([William & Mary - Cost and Financial Aid](http://www.wm.edu/admission/undergraduateadmission/applicationprocess/aidscholarships/index.php)). As we mentioned, only the 1693 award and the W&M Scholar award provide tuition assistance. They provide the same dollar amount regardless of residency.

Hi W&M Admission! Have you guys already done the Murray Scholar applicant invitations, or are you still in the process of doing that? Thanks!

@yhbultimate11, we have not yet contacted those who the committee have nominated for the Murray Scholarship (now named the 1693-Murray award). We should be sending those invitations shortly.

IS it possible for a student whose application that was reviewed early and the committee decided to admit that student to william and mary but not give them a post card? if so why wouldn’t they get one?

@beautifulchick, there are instances in which we are leaning towards admit on a student who was reviewed early but maybe we are waiting on additional information (mid-year grades, updated testing, etc.) that won’t arrive until after our postcard sending period (which just ended) so one isn’t sent. And again, remember, postcards get sent to a very small group of our admitted student cohort. While we get that receiving a postcard is nice, the really important piece of mail is that thick envelope which will go to MANY people who didn’t receive a postcard.

@W&M Admission, thank you for your response. I was also wondering if an out of state applicant with lower that average SAT scores but is outstanding still qualify for a scholarship. I know they are hard tog et but would bad SAT scores but you out of the running

@beautifulchick, if you are referring to the Monroe and 1693 awards, it’s very rare for those awards to go to someone below at 1450 Critical Reading + Math/33 ACT. It can happen but it is rare. That’s not because we consider other SATs bad, it’s because we have so many students who are so great in every aspect of their application including testing.

For those who may not keep up with the Admit It! Blog, we have begun our Committee deliberations for the freshmen applicants. What this means is we are in the final stage of our review process for the Class of 2017. Our Committee process is a long one but an engaging and important one. We do not yet know a release date for decisions. For more information on our how our Committee makes its decisions, check out the blog’s Overheard in Committee series.

@w&madmission, oh no i was walking about the other scholarship for people who have faced adversity or bring diversity

Have the 1693-Murray Scholar and Monroe Scholar notifications been sent? If so, when were they sent?

@beautifulchick, W&M Scholar awards are what you’re asking about. Because those awards are also very selective, they tend to go to students who are at least within the middle 50% range for in-state if in-state or out-of-state if out-of-state.

@drwhofan, Monroe Scholar decisions and W&M Scholar decisions, for the most part, will be released in a week or so. Those who were selected as semi-finalists for the 1693-Murray award were notified by email about two weeks ago.

The wait is killing me! :p

^^ I am jumping out of my seat at every mention of W&M and am stalking their blog haha

W&M Admissions, what is the middle 50% for out-of-state students? According to the W&M website, the overall middle 50% is 1250-1460. Thanking you in advance for your response.

@keepinitreal, our latest blog delves into this alot. Out-of-state students, for the most part, make up the upper end of our middle 50% range (so 1390-1460 give or take). That’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of in-state students in that range or out-of-state students below that range but that’s a good approximation.

Hi W&M admissions  So now’s about the time to start signing for AP exams. I was accepted ED, and wondering what admission’s view on taking AP exams are? I am currently enrolled in 5 AP classes, but am not sure if I should take my french exam. It’s been a tough class for me, and I’ve been able to keep a good grade, but do not see myself passing the exam (no one from my school has ever passed). They’re super expensive and I don’t want to have my parents spend money on an exam I won’t be able to get credit for.

Thanks!

My gosh. W&M. <sigh>
