Words from W&M Admission: News and Updates for the 2012-2013 academic year

W&M Admissions, thank you.

@soccersara, whether or not to take an AP exam is totally up to you. We don’t have any particular feelings about it. Of course, you can only benefit by taking them should you earn a score that is eligible for credit but if you feel that the cost and time studying for one is not likely to yield a favorable result, there’s no need to take one.

@GolfFather, spelling mistakes are unfortunately a casualty of a lot of long days spent in Committee. Please forgive. #ABitBlearyEyed

Thanks so much W&M Admission! I’ll do a cost-benefit analysis for that french exam :P

One more question. I picked up about 15 scholarship applications today, and nearly all of them ask for the mailing address of the school I will be attending. I’ve looked online and can’t seem to find one. I found the P.O. box address, but wasn’t sure which department scholarships stuff would need? Thanks!

@soccersara, all offices at the College use the PO Box Address. Student Accounts/Bursar’s Office handles tuition collection.

Thank you!

Admit It! has posted that Monroe Scholar decisions were mailed March 8 - received today March 11!

I got my acceptance package today! I’m so excited! More cyphers :)

Will 1693 Scholar Semi-Finalists be notified if they are not chosen as finalists? Does being accepted as Monroe Scholar automatically mean the 1693 is a no??

@PhdBeenThere and eniloracw, congrats on your admission as Monroe Scholars. Please note they were mailed March 8. When they arrive in mailboxes is up to the post office. No doubt many people did not receive them by yesterday.

@HelenH, all 1693 semifinalists are Monroe Scholars. So getting your Monroe letter has nothing to do with the 1693 process. And yes, all semifinalists will be notified of their status in the 1693 process.

Were w&m scholarship notifications also sent out?

Hi W&M, I’m getting ready to apply to colleges in this upcoming fall and W&M seems like an incredible school to go to. However, I’m really worried about my extracurricular activities not being up to par with your standards. What would you like to see on the application as far as extracurricular activities go?

@cassiebreeze, W&M Scholar notifications were also sent by mail on March 8.

@John2018, we don’t look for any specific activities. Instead we look for commitment/passion (usually demonstrated by being involved in at least some activities throughout your tenure in high school) and any way you distinguish yourself within that arena (maybe holding a leadership position or honing a particular talent or starting an organization).

Thank you very much for the help. I had two more questions if it’s not too much of a bother. Are things such as teaching yourself a language counted as an extracurricular, even though it’s not associated with an organization? I had been really interested in learning Latin, but it isn’t offered at my high school nor could I find a class near me so I decided to buy a textbook a teach myself. My second question is it looked down upon joining clubs senior year? There had been some clubs I had wanted to join, which I had became interested in the middle of my junior year, but was told that it was too late in the year to join. I apologize for the long post.

Are Monroe Scholars given special housing? If so, where do they live?

@John2018, generally speaking we wouldn’t consider teaching yourself a language an extracurricular activity. That might be better mentioned in the Additional Information section of the app. As far as joining clubs in 12th grade, that’s fine assuming there are other activities you’ve been doing for longer. We just like to see sustained commitment and passion in your extracurricular activities. That doesn’t apply to every activity, but it hopefully applies to some.

@purpledrops, Monroe Scholars have the option to live in Monroe Hall if they choose although they are not required to.

My daughter was accepted as a Monroe Scholar. She is very excited (as am I). I’ve read on the website about the research stipend, living in Monroe dorm. What other benefits are there to being a Monroe Scholar?

@Aardvark, congratulations to your daughter. There will actually be a letter from the Director of the Monroe Scholars Program that you should get next week which provides a few more details. Additional benefits include the ability to apply for a $1000 research grant to be used the summer after freshman year (this grant is exclusively for Monroe Scholars) and invitation only scholarly lunches.

OK, thank you

W&M Admission, I am currently a junior looking to apply to W&M soon. I just have one quick question. During my freshman and sophomore year, I wasn’t able to do as many extracurricular activities that I wanted, due to a lack of transportation (my parents were always working late). As soon as I got my license at the end of my sophomore year, I started to do more community work and join more clubs and take on a leadership position. Does the admission staff see a lack of extracurricular activities during freshman/sophomore year as an issue?

Thank you so much W&M Admission for all you guys have done! As an accepted student, I would like to thank you for all the hard work you guys have had to do the past few months. I just have a quick question. Do you know if the Freshman Seminars can help count for general reqs? Thank you so much!
