worried about our chances/hoping to get into the College of Music

my D will be a Senior in High school this yr. She is hoping to attend FSU and major in Music Ed. or possible Vocal Performance Were not concerned about her vocal audition but am about her grades and SAT score. Math is a true weakness that continues to i Any suggestions would be great.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

That SAT score doesn’t include her writing score does it? Because if it doesn’t, [as long as she has the minimums](<a href=“FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found”>FSU Admissions | Error 404 page not found), that’s not bad. If it does include writing though, it’s not good.

You also will want to [recalculate her GPA for FSU](http://cyberguidance.net/college/recalgpa.pdf). A 3.68 weighted GPA isn’t all that great, especially with that many Dual enrollment classes that she did well enough in to boost her GPA.

Course rigor and GPA are the two most important factors for FSU. That GPA isn’t spectacular even with a decent level of course rigor, which might be a potential red flag.

I’d still say though the chances are decent for FSU acceptance… the music acceptance might be a different story.

Thanks Pasbal, I tried to recalculate her GPA for FSU but got a little confused. I had always just used one of the GPA calculators online. Here are her grades.
9th.
Eng.honors B, B Alg B A, Bio Honors C , B, World Hist.Honors B, B
10th.
German A, A, Eng. Honors A, A, Geometry C, C, Chem Honors C, C, American His Honors A, A,
11th.
AP Music Theory A,A, German B, B, Gov Honors A, Algebra, C, B,
College courses Com 1 B, Com 2 B, Fund. of Bio A, German 1 A.

I worry about the C’s she has. We decided to Dual Enroll for 2 reasons. Most important was to boast her GPA but also because we wanted to show the University that she could do college work. That SAT score is WITH the Writing. It was her first attempt without really prepping. ( she is currently enrolled in a Prep Class) My D has never really tested well in Standardized Tests but hopefully she will pull it up. However, I don’t think she will get that Math score above or even close to 500. ( she has a slight LD issue, never severe enough to qualify for Ex services but seems to interfere with Math) Another reason why we are taking almost all of the Core College academics at Community College.

If I am correct, I believe that the Music College can “override” the Admissions if the student is accepted into the College of Music. My D will go into her audition with 2 recommendations from distinguished Alumni from FSU Music program. She is very good. We just wanted their to be no second guessing from either the University or the College of Music.
Again, thanks so much for your impute, this process is so very stressful.

Keep in mind that when calculating her FSU GPA, they count each semester’s grade, not just the final grade in the course.

With the SAT score you posted, I’d say there’s no way that she is going to be accepted. I’m also not sure that the College of Music can “override” a deferment or rejection by the FSU admissions office. You have to be accepted to FSU to be able to be accepted into the CoM program.

Are you instate or OOS? My daughter took the ACT and had a score of 24 - that was her second attempt (much better than the first, believe it or not - she’s not a good standardized test taker either), and her UW GPA was 3.7. We are OOS. Anyway, she applied EA and was deferred in December. Basically what they told us was that if the College of Music wanted her, she was in. If they didn’t, she would not be accepted to FSU, period (which didn’t matter to us, because she wouldn’t go there if she couldn’t major in music).

Anyway, to make a long story short, she was accepted as a voice major and immediately afterwards was accepted at FSU (love the way they tell you on their website - it’s really cool!). I don’t know if this helps or not, as I don’t know how her ACT score relates to your D’s SAT score. I have heard that for some people, they will do better on the ACT than SAT, so you might have her take the ACT too.

If you’re instate and she is accepted into the College of Music, then my guess is you’re probably okay. If you are OOS, I’m not so sure. At the audition, they told us that they only have so much power in getting the admissions office to change their mind…but the admissions office sort of told us the opposite…so who knows? But it sounds like you’re doing everything you can to help her raise her SAT score - that’s what we did for our D, and it did really help! Good luck - it’s a great school!!

Thanks Saxlady, Yes we are instate. As of right now my D weighted GPA is 3.68. She dual enrolls so hopefully by the end of the Fall semester she will have bumped it up to 3.7.
We will be taking the ACT in the Fall and retaking the SAT. I am sure the prep class will help some.

I have heard similar stories of students who were on the fence with admissions but had great auditions and were then accepted with no problems. This is such a stressful time, .Your D personal situation still gives us hope.

Your right it is a fantastic school for music and my D can’t imagine going anywhere else. If all else fails ( and its always good to have a plan B) She will early admit to Community college in the Spring and finish up by end of summer with her A.A.
Again thanks for your impute, will let you know how we do!
