Worst Book You've Read in High School?

^ Agreed! I really liked Brave New World! I don’t get why The Great Gatsby or Huck Finn would be considered the worst books either. After seeing some more posts I still stand by The Scarlet Letter being the worst. Although I wasn’t fond of The House on Mango Street either.

Red Badge of Courage. It’s as if someone threw a much more stupid and whinier version of Holden Caulfield into the middle of the Civil War.

Liked-
Of Mice and Men
Never Let Me Go
To Kill a Mockingbird

Hated-
Odyssey

Neutral-
Ender’s Game
Romeo and Juliet
Make Lemonade

All read for Honors English 9.

For the first half of 9th grade, I was in regular English, and we read The 5 people You Meet in Heaven, and the novel Flowers for Algernon. I liked the former but not the latter because I had read the short story in 8th grade lol. I transferred to honors mid-year and there we read 12 Angry Men, Life of Pi, and Romeo and Juliet…they were Okay…the worst book I’ve read in secondary school was “The Pearl” in 8th grade. And my regular 9 English class read that later in the year, after I switched! Thank goodness I switched…

Worst book is a tie between
This Boys Life and
Purple Hibiscus

Best book is a tie between
El coronel no tiene quien le escriba
One Hundred Years of Solitude and
The Great Gatsby

Sent from my Nexus One using CC

Ugh I forgot The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Didn’t like that one either.

Worst: David Copperfield
King Henry VI parts 1-3
Ethan Frome (although I thought it had a powerful ending, it was deadly dull until then)
The Joy Luck Club (well my class read the Rose and Waverly sections so to be fair I only got the opportunity to hate half of it)

Frankenstein and The Old Man and the Sea. Both were summer readings for two different years of English, both books ended in me falling asleep to them every time I tried reading.

Most of the books I didn’t like were mainly unappealing to me because of a lack of teacher motivation or how much I hate reading assignments (Tom Sawyer, Hatchet, Rebecca, etc.). Of all the books I’ve had to read, the only one I’ve genuinely hated was Lord of the Flies. Shallow and unrelatable characters, too much imagery, and too much filler (about 60%). This was during my favorite year of English, but I couldn’t force myself to read even the whole thing.

Books I did like: Ender’s Game, The Outsiders, Call of the Wild, Something for Joey, The Giver
Books I am indifferent to: White Lilacs, Rebecca, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Books I’m going to read this year: Ethan Frome (God help me), Romeo and Juliet (God help me again), Life of Pi

I loved the scarlet letter! And I loved Huck Finn.

On another note, Into The Wild was terrible. I refuse to ever set sight on that book again. Ugh it was just atrocious.

Romeo and Juliet was annoyingly bad and Macbeth was just meh… Though I did enjoy Othello very much.

I hated The Sun Also Rises.
Hemingway is overrated.
I love basically anything by Shakespeare, though. (Except Romeo and Juliet. That was stupid.) Macbeth is my favorite <3

^ wat the wat
romeo and juliet is my absolute favorite! i’ve read it like fifty times, and i have all the movies.

and the op doesn’t like wuthering heights and a tale of two cities?? what is even happening to this world

but least favorite: of mice and men

Favorites: To Kill a Mockingbird (9); Of Mice and Men (9)
Least favorites: Life of Pi (summer before grade 9); Scarlet Letter (11)

Pride and Prejudice… I didn’t even read the entire book (probably why I got a B in 9th grade English)

My least favorite is Wuthering Heights, but then again, I read that in 8th grade. I didn’t get it at all. Animal Farm was ok. Romeo and Juliet is the worst love story ever. To Kill a Mockingbird was boring at first, but then it got interesting. LOTF was ok, but I really hated Jack. And the Kite Runner, meh.

A tree grows in Brooklyn

Antigone, which is an ancient Greek play. It was the worst couple weeks of my life.

I hated Grapes of Wrath. I read like 10 pages total. We were supposed to read like 80 pages each night, and I just kept falling asleep.

Dante’s Inferno. Guy goes sightseeing in hell and it rhymes…sounds fun, right? Well, it’s not.

The Odyssey, my freshman year
