writing contests

does anyone have any suggestions of some prestigious national writing competitions?

NCTE achievement award in writing. Scholastic A&W awards. Uhmm.. I'll try and think of some others.

jegan3 covered the two I've heard of. NCTE you have to be nominated by your English teacher, I think. Scholastic, you have to flag down a teacher to do a rec.

Speaking of Scholastic, does anyone know when they start doing notifications?

haha i was JUST about to hijack this thread and ask about that jegan. apparently it's the end of this month, but i dont know exactly. if it's really the end of this month, then forget about it, scholastic :) i have more important news waiting for me lol

Haha I applied for Scholastic the day it was due... ergo, no recs -> "Poetry" category instead of Portolio. Ha.

If you feel like branching out into essay contests, there are also dozens of those. I don't feel like listing them all... but FastWeb has them.

Recently I did the Newsweek My Turn essay contest, but I think the deadline is over now? But yeah, essay contests!

and next year I'm doing the Scholastic A&W Awards thing...

Besides those two very ambiguous and unhelpful suggestions, I've got nothing for you. They need to make some more writing-centered contests! All the prestigious awards are always about math or science -- the two subjects from which I shy away. :x

I did the My Turn essay thing the night it was due, and I'm pretty sure I sounded like I was on crack...

The UNA-USA essay contest is pretty good, not sure how prestigeous it is, though

Haha yeah my essay pretty much sucked something awful. your crack essay was probably much much better than mine LOL.

una-usa? sounds familiar..
