@kendrickgirl I applied to 10 schools and love Yale’s liberalness/LGBTQ scene too! high-fives

Yale’s liberal leaning (well the whole Ivy league political leaning for that matter), the LGBT scene, and diversity is one of the many reasons i love Yale. I’m a straight, white, Christian-raised male myself, but growing up in a conservative, 98% white and Christian town where liberal thoughts and homosexuality are frowned upon has made me want to flee north.

^HAHAHA same. Going to Catholic schools my whole life, there really isn’t much support for left-leaners. My high school did a mock election and almost 80% voted for Romney. I even know a few people who took a political compass test and landed in the farthest upper-right corner.

@velvetveins haha oh really? guess we have a lot in common which is great. the gender studies program at yale is awesome which is why i want to go.

@graysonw yeah i grew up in a really conservative muslim household but i ended up founding a GSA at my high school. it’s pretty weird but yeah i definitely want to go to yale because it is so liberal.

Well, to basically every post above; I also go to a fairly conservative high school, but I actually don’t mind it. I think it’s good to have a nice political discussion with anybody regardless of their political views, so long as it can be kept respectful.

Though, yes, I took the political compass and quite literally score something like a -9.5, -9.85, or something like that, so I definitely am far left. xD

And @kendrickgirl, that’s awesome about founding the GSA! :)

My school is also overwhelmingly conservative. That’s not a bad thing. I just want to meet different people.

Same here. And conservatives are still very nice people.

@kendrick my mom is very religously conservative while I am the exact opposite. I tried to write about it in my personal statement but i didnt wanna offend anyone. Lol SO i wrote about how I want to be a doctor but I have hemophobia! Hahaha its actually really serious fear for me all throughout my life. But ive overcome it

My hs was full of liberals who thought themselves to be revolutionaries. The “rebellious” hipster types (how rebellious can you get living a plush life with mommy and daddy, right?). By god were they insufferable and haughty.
I’m only applying to Yale because of the gorgeous campus and the financial aid. :3
Oh, and the promise of an intellectual community.

Bottom line - there is going to be a ridiculous amount of variety/diversity in political opinion no matter what Ivy you are talking about.

I myself am as far right as they come fiscally and as far left as they come socially.

Personally I’m a conservative, but I don’t mind being around liberals or debating politics with them. The only thing that peeves me off is people who are completely ignorant but yet think they know what they’re talking about when it comes to politics, I appreciate knowledgable people.

I appreciate some conservative economics and I know there are many nice conservatives, just outside of where I live.
My APUSH teacher:
-Preached creationism
-Constantly ragged on Obama and other liberal leaders
-Mocked liberal ideals
-(This one’s my favorite) Narrated the Civil War from the viewpoint of the south, or in her words, “The War of Northern Aggression”

I come from a pretty big city so there’s a good mix of liberals and conservatives (our version of democrats versus republicans)
Personally, I’m probably more conservative but apparently our version of conservative is still liberal in the states :p

I come from Mexico City and it’s a very liberal city, but Mexico’s just not a very liberal country.
I find it so interesting that religion is different in many countries. I am a catholic myself, and so is my family, but our religion in this city specifically has some liberal views if that makes sense. Both my family and I support the LGBT community, and it’s quite often you find movements and support groups here, even from religious groups.

Politically, I’m a liberal or left-sided and the other two parties are right-sided (conservative). And of the latter is the one that currently hold the power in Mexico.

I’d love joining the Yale Political Union, it sounds like an awesome experience to debate and hear opinions from other people!

The diversity on this thread = why I want to go to Yale

Wow, I’m surprised at how many of you live in conservative schools. My school is probably the most conservative in my district (which is very large) but still liberal with a very liberal faculty outside of a few teachers (like my libertarian APWH teacher). And we really have the conservative stereotype because of our significant Mormon community (even though we aren’t Utah haha)

Hey did any of you guys get contacted for interviews yet?
If so, when?
I haven’t gotten mine yet.

@graysonw Exactly! Enough said!

@kim7564 I haven’t but I doubt I’ll get one. Just be patient, you’ll get contacted eventually if you get one :)

@kim7564 yeah i haven’t been contacted yet.

aww guys if we all get into yale let’s totally talk about politics. yay diversity.

@ram0276 in one of my essays i wrote about how my conservative side vs. my liberal side. basically, it was about one of the times i was on the subway and i saw this girl wearing a hijab and how this reminded me of my majorly conservative family.

Okay, I was concerned because I have a friend who got hers on January 4th, and she submitted literally a minute before the deadline. I don’t know if that means that the admission officers whipped through some apps and made sure to interview her early for likely letters or whatnot. I’m probably just overanalyzing.
