so remind me again, are the interviews scheduled on a lottery basis or do they pick based on what they know about you already? i haven't sent in part II yet so i'm guessing if the latter is true, it's based on part I.

thanks :)

I think it's based on whether there's an alumni interviewer in your area, though a couple people on here have mentioned having on-campus interviews, which might be done based on your info.

on-campus interviews are a privilege for legacies only. they don't like revealing that information, for obvious reasons. but the earlier you get your application in, it seems the more likely you are to get an alumni interview. that's about all i can determine.

Denzera: You're forgetting sons/daughters of professors. According to the adcom I had my interview with, these individuals, too, are elegible for on campus interviews.

ah, interesting. didn't know that.

not that that really makes a difference to anyone here. but at least it's not like MIT where sons/daughters of professors are automatically admitted, or so i'm told.

It's just random and based on availability in your area. It's not because you're special or not special.

I've never heard this, but I have no reason to doubt mikesown since I think he's actually a Columbia student.

It's probably a good policy. The kids have smart genes!

Columbia2002: Nope, I'm an ED applicant(who most certainly will get rejected with his horrible 3.7W GPA)! I'm simply relaying the information the adcom told me during the interview.

Are you a legacy then (if you interviewed with an adcom)?

Yes, I am a legacy.

i heard that interviews are usually for borderline applicants?
is that true?

sujinhan: I have not spoken with an adcom about that, but the general consensus(from what I've heard here) seems to be that you get an interview if there's enough interviewers in your area to interview all the students. So, to answer your question, interviews are in no way determined by your stats(in fact, you can get an interview after only submitting part I, which includes no real information about your stats).

Ah, thank you.
I was just wondeirng.

I submitted Part I of my app in August, and I live in a very populated area of CA, and I haven't been contacted for an interview. Does that mean I'm probably not getting one?

it doesn't mean anything

It just means that your name might have been sent off to a different alumni interviewer that is more busy than the others whether it be with their own personal life, their job, or other interviewees.

For example, my best friend got an e-mail for an interview from Columbia in February, whereas I have not received anything yet.

OK, thanks!
