my d will be there on the 19th. This is one of her top choice. We can't wait to visit the campus.

Nice to hear about their summer "Footloose" program and what a great time everyone is having at OCU. My d is in the fnal run of "Fiddler" now. She has the role of Hodel and is having alot of fun as well as a growth experience working with some amazing actors.

Lexismom,
We will be there on 11/19 as well and look forward to meeting you to tell you how much your involvement here has contributed to the value of the site. Thanx! D was at OCU for a week in early June for the vocal camp and it is now one of her top choices as well. Also, I can tell you that the interaction with school officials and a recent hand written card from one of the professors have really made a difference. D's at CAP 21 summer program now and says' the training is great but she sounds' homesick. That could be only my interpretation though! See you in the fall. Noccadad

I'm still bugging my sister about preparing for the college application process... At some point she's just going to stop taking my phone calls, I think :-)

But really, with all the craziness of shows/camps/application essays/classes/summer coursework, etc., it seems like there's no time to prepare for the auditions, themselves.

What did you/your kids do to prepare for auditions? When did they select their monologues/songs? My sister is reading a few monologues and trying to pick out a few, but hasn't seen her voice teacher in a few weeks just because of everything else (she's working three jobs, going to attend a performance camp next week, has summer AP work to do, and is volunteering at vacation bible school this week, and just finished the club swim season last week). I feel like this process is so overwhelming already, and we haven't even started auditions yet!

Reading this to myself I think I might just be being paranoid. I'm sure she will get her priorities in order soon...this is her future, and MT is what she wants to do! I just want to do everything I can to help her pursue her goal.

You have to know how much we all respect what you are doing to help your sister be successful in this process. It is clear to you how overwhelming the process can be and how easy it will be for her to get overwhelmed. In trying to help her, make sure you don't become part of the problem by "getting on her case" too much or too often.

Most kids need the most help with ORGANIZING the process, prioritizing the many tasks that need to be done, which may be a bit difficult for you as you are at a distance from home. Perhaps you can help her set up a calendar of due dates for the schools she is interested in or create a timeline of tasks to be accomplished.

But my best suggestion is not original to me and I wish I could remember which CC'er posted this when my D was applying because it just made SO MUCH sense. Here it is: rather than randomly talking to your sister about the process, asking what she has or hasn't done and generally making her feel like she's behind 24/7 (which they WILL feel regardless of how caught up they are), why don't you arrange some mutually accepted and reasonable interval to check in with her about where things stand, e.g., once a week?, once every 2 weeks? whatever feels comfortable to her and insures that she won't ever fall too far behind. And you are ONLY ALLOWED to talk to her about college stuff on those days. Other conversations can be about other stuff - boys, clothes, music, whatever else that the two of you like (and she will need ) to talk about. That way she knows when to expect to report to someone (in this case a loving family mamber) and you may be able to help her to set interim goals that are achievable and will give her a sense of accomplishment along the way. And she won't feel like she has to explain herself and her choices on a too frequent basis. Make sense? I thought it was a brilliant strategy and I know that it lessened tensions in my house considerably.

I don't know if I've posted this or not, but my final list going into the whole process is:
Emerson
Wagner
OCU
Hartt
UC Irvine
University of Northern Colorado
Ithaca

I'm getting so nervous about all of this. And I have a ton of essays to write.

my list is thus far...
(btw, im not going straight conservatory...im double majoring hopefully at all these places...becuase i like to be rediculously busy)

nyu early decision
northwestern
michigan
ccm
depauw (vocal performance...a saftey so i can transfer)

MT and Acting:
Carnegie
Ithaca
Florida State
Otterbein
Hartt

Acting only:
Juilliard
NCSA
SUNY Purchase

Still thinking about:
UCLA
Evansville
Rutgers
Penn State

My safety is community college, local theatre and trying again. My school is relaxing the 5 colleges rule from last year for those auditioning for conservatories.

hey! I was just wondering what you have heard about chicago college of performing arts. I live in Chicago, and I've never really heard anything about it, but I would love to stay close to home. Have you visited there and is it a 4 year conservatory program?
Thanks!:)

It's great to see everyone's list of schools go up (and makes me feel not so nuts). My daughter will be applying to 8 schools and is already a little overwhelmed even though she is starting early. Right now she will be applying to:

Point Park
CCM
Ithaca
Webster
OCU
Otterbein
Miami
Arizona (?)

Thanks to all for the wonderful posts. This site has incredibly informative - much more so than our high school guidance office. Looking forward to getting to know the parents and students going through the audition process in the near 9 months.

Thanks for the great advice!! I especially like the idea of only talking to her at designated times about auditions...I won't be on her nerves as much and both of us will be less stressed out :-)
I'm working on a calendar of possible audition dates right now...I am working two jobs and volunteering in a neurosurgery lab so it's hard to get stuff done during the week!

Does anybody have an opinion about weather the Unified Auditions are veiwed in a different way from the auditions at the campus. Does making the effort to audition at the school hold more weight? Are there any percentages out there of how many are chosen from each site? I wonder if the same auditioners see the applicants from all sites?

In my opinion, from what I've heard from students, HS teachers, and college people - it does not matter. They understand that you can't come out to ALL of ur schools to audition, and they hold an audition out-of-state in the same vein as one on campus.

"I wonder if the same auditioners see the applicants from all sites?"

I think it depends...I know that for NYU, there is not one set of auditioners who sees EVERYONE, however, at CMU the same faculty members do see everyone...it just depends on the school.

The website now says:
November 5, 2005 Musical Theatre ONLY
January 21, 2006
February 11, 2006
February 18, 2006
February 25, 2006 No Musical Theatre

I previously posted that Feb. 25 was Musical Theatre (from an e-mail I received) but now the website shows that there will be no MT auditions that day.
And there is still a musical theatre workshop scheduled for Nov. 4.

tg1717 - I believe that the Chicago College of Performing Arts is the same as Roosevelt University (maybe it is housed within that university). Do a search on the forum for Roosevelt, which I believe has had a little discussion. We visted as one of many visits, but it is not on our audition list.

Last year for BW, I think I remember them adding an extra date for auditions. I'm not sure if it was because they had so many audition requests or not. So it may be possible they open up that feb 25th date for musical theatre but dont rely on that happening. Also, for those of you wanting to audition during the november audition sign up early, It filled up quickly last year.

I'm glad to see so many CCers interested and planning on auditioning for Oklahoma City University. We're pleased you are considering us!

In regards to the question about re-scheduling an audition appointment once you've arranged one...At OCU, please feel free to re-schedule but you should do it soon. You should also do it within the next two weeks as school beings and the OCU Music Student Services office will be busy dealing with the current semester. But Mary Mowry, our Student Services coordinator, is always ready to help you and you can always email her a mamowry@okcu.edu. Or always feel free to email me and I will be happy to get your information to Mary ASAP.
