2006 audition dates

Does anyone have the audition dates for Wright State or Illinois Wesleyan? They haven't updated their web sites yet!

illinisue - no, but I'm waiting for Ill Wesleyan's, also.

Emerson
Not sure if this has been posted, but I thought I would do so again.
I called Emerson yesterday to find out about its dates and procedures. They said that you schedule an audition by filling out a supplemental form and sending in your money for the audition.

But at this point the only form psoted on the web is last year's form. She said that the new form is not yet available and may not be for another few weeks as the person in charge is away.

She also said specific audition dates are not yet set. Has anyone heard anything different?

Also, FYI I asked her about sophomore cut, etc. since my daugher was concerned that a lot of people are asked to leave program after soph year. The person I spoke with said they reaudition at the end of soph year in an effort to distinguish which kids might be better off in the BA program, etc.

Prodded by my questioining, she said it was NOT an arbitrary cut policy (i.e. cut xxx number out just because the program is too big) but based on real reasons that some kids are better off inthe BA program.

We on CC have written much over the last year about cut policies and new comers should go look at Shauna's FAQs where she includes some i mportant info.

My own opinion (and my daughter's as well, I think) is we don't object to a re-auditioning to re-evaluate what is appropriate. We are uncomfortable with a cut policy, however, that is more arbitrary -- that says our program is too big and we must cut it by xxx numbers.

(Hope te subject of cut policy is not too much off topic for this "audition" thread.)

I would love to hear from anyone with further info about Emerson and the re-audtion policy to be assured it is not indeed a "cut" policy.

Thought I would bump this thread because it has some great info on the U of M repertoire list (a few pages back) and so that everyone can start posting their audition dates as they schedule them. I have a quick question about the repertoire list: how do you list duets? Or should you even? I gather that the list should be more a sample of what you have in your book, not of every musical theatre song you have ever performed?

Also - I went to the CMU page where you are supposed to go to sign up for audition dates but all I saw were instructions to send in the Common App and the CMU supplement - but it doesn't list preference for audition dates on the supplement form so I can't figure out how you're supposed to set up an audition date. Am I right that for most schools you need to send in the application before you can schedule an audition date?

One more question - if you are trying to get Unifieds audition dates, what if two schools schedule you at the same time?? It seems like schools wouldn't be too happy to reschedule the time they assigned you so that you could audition for a competing school, but maybe not.

Ahh sorry this is really the last question, I don't really know where to put it so I will just put it here: Does anyone know if you can audition for CCM in both drama AND musical theatre?

The cmu page is confusing.. but deep down in the site I found a page that says they will be accepting audition appointments Sept. 1. Here is the link:

<a href="http://www.cmu.edu/enrollment/admission/visit/drama.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cmu.edu/enrollment/admission/visit/drama.html</a></p>

AspiringActress...I can try to answer some of your questions....For the UM repertoire list.....you would go beyond what was in your book because often what is in your book is audition music, not necessarily music you have performed (though some overlap of course). For instance, my D might have Defying Gravity on the list she has performed but she would never do it in auditions and it is not in her audition book. They do want to know music you have performed (ie., solos in productions) which may not be necessarily audition songs in your book. How you organize the list will be individualized somewhat based on your experiences. My D did not list duets as a category but I see a couple on her list that she has performed like If Momma Was Married and Stepsister's Lament. However, she did list solos she sang in an ensemble situation....examples....America as Anita from West Side story had a significant solo but that character is not the only singer in the song or Magic to Do as The Leading Player in Pippin, same thing. I can give you her categories but again, they pertained to her background. But maybe it will help:

Musical Theater
Solo
Solo in Ensemble

Jazz
Solo

Classical
Solo

Piano with Vocals

Piano

Guitar

For each song, it was listed in alphabetical order by composer and there was an M next to it if memorized and a P next to it if also performed. Basically every song had an M (or she would not have listed it as she "knows" lots of other songs) and many of the songs also had a P, but some did not.

Regarding lining up auditions, no you are not exactly correct that first you must file an application before lining up an audition. I STRONGLY encourage you to look up the procedure at every school on your list NOW. Each one does it differently. Some you do apply first. Some you note first, second an third choice on an application. Some you line up via phone starting on a certain date which could be as early as now or quite soon. Some you can only line up on their websites. Make yourself a master chart of the requirements and deadlines for every school as there is much variation. Keep a record of when you did what and who you spoke with, everything. Print out copies of any confirmations (CMU had noted NO audition appt. for my D when I had a copy of the audition time and receipt of my credit card payment from online.....discovered this some time later but before auditions). By the way, NYTheaterMom gave you the link about CMU and it says Sept. 1 it will be available to sign up on their website (the method that CMU requires) but just letting you know that last year, it did not go up until early October!

I don't know the answer to your CCM question so perhaps someone else can chime in but I sort of think MT and Acting at CCM are one or the other but please check and if at all in doubt, call the school. Do not totally rely on information here as while it is very helpful, you want to go to the source with something this important. Further, these things change from year to year and so some of our experiences will differ. Example....last year BOCO had no dance audition and I believe they will this year.

I can't answer the Unifieds question as we did not do those but others here have and I think I have seen this addressed here before.

Best of luck to you...
Susan

PS, I can't get my writing to "indent" on here and so my list above does not look right....but the words "solo" or "solo in ensemble" are subheadings under the headings above them.

Susan - thanks for all your help! especially the clarification about the U of M rep. list, I read something else on this thread written a few months ago that led me to believe it was just audition material you write down...I was just confused! :) I will definitely be checking with each school about audition dates, too, thanks for the advice.

I found out from a CCM umm employee? :) that you can in fact audition for both, because the departments are SOOO separate. So hooray.

Thanks again for your help!

Please don't be TOO nervous about the essays. My d applied to 8 MT schools and only had to write 2 different essays! Most of them are so similar, so you don't have to write a different one each time. Also, check to see which schools accept the common application. My d got into NYU (CAP21) using the common application; apparently they give it as much weight as the regular application.

I noticed on the FAQ website that there was a ~ by WVWC indicating that they are non-audition, but that may have changed (I'm not positive because I'm not sure how their audition/application/admission process works), because this was e-mailed to me by one of the coordinators of performing arts students today:

The dates for the Musical Theatre Auditions are as follows:
Saturday, February 18
Sunday Feb. 19
Saturday, Feb. 25
Sunday Feb 26

The audition times run 15 minutes time slots from 8:00AM to 2:00 PM

We will begin taking reservations for the auditions beginning December 1, and at that time will be sending out requirements for the auditions.

MTbigsis:

I just went to the department's website. The page devoted to auditions is entitled "Scholarship Auditions" which is almost always an indication that the school does not hold auditions for entrance into the program. I'd suggest writing to their department chair and asking directly. If you find out that the auditions are for entrance, please post that on the Big List thread, and Shauna or I will change the entry.

Thanks!

Hello everyone! i came across this forum a couple weeks ago and i totally wish i knew about this when i was auditioning for undergrad theatre schools. i am currently a junior BFA acting major at Illinois Wesleyan and i noticed that some people wanted to know when the audition dates for 2005/2006 were. yes, we know that the website hasnt been updated... we just had a staff change in the theatre recruitment office so things have been a bit wonky... BUT annyways...

audition/interview dates (as of now) are:

January 21
January 28
February 11
February 25

i know that IWU also attends the Illinois High School Theatre Festival auditions. and i think that there is an audition date for late fall that hasnt been scheduled yet.

...and just to give you a breakdown of the programs IWU has:
BFA Music Theatre
~8 accepted every year
BFA Acting
~8 accepted every year
BFA Design/Tech
~8 accepted every year
BA Theatre Arts
does not require an audition, however, it is highly recommended because talent scholarships are given.

so yeah... thats about it. if anyone has any questions about anything, especially minority potential theatre/music theatre majors that have questions or concerns(im asian-american) feel free to email me at ekim@iwu.edu.

I'm so confused...you are auditioning as a JUNIOR for musical theatre colleges?? I thought you auditioned Jan/Feb of your senior year. eek I hope that Is the case!

kbellantone... im not sure if youre referring to me... but i'll answer your question anyway!

to clear up things a bit... im a junior in college... its my third year... of college
i was just posting because someone had asked when my school was holding auditions for admissions into our program.

...and if you werent talking about me... just ignore this completely! =o)

sorry...I meant to address someone else but I got confused...But I'm sure you can answer my question. I was talking about high school. Do the auditon rounds to get into college start during your senior or junior year?

senior year

Note that Roosevelt Univ. will be at the NY Unifieds, but only for ACTING. Not MT. All the MT auditions take place in Chicago this year.

At least that is how it looks to me.

<a href="http://ccpa.roosevelt.edu/theatre/auditiondate.htm%5B/url%5D">http://ccpa.roosevelt.edu/theatre/auditiondate.htm</a></p>

Carnegie Mellon's online form is finally up. Here is a link that will take you to the page to sign up for an audition. <a href="http://www.cmu.edu/enrollment/admission/visit/drama.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.cmu.edu/enrollment/admission/visit/drama.html</a></p>

PS I was just double checking the CMU site again and for some reason it is not now working. So I would advise people to keep trying. Maybe they are having tech troubles with it, or else "turned it off" for the weekend?

They were having problems with it yesterday. I tried to register my D and it got stuck and wouldnt let me go forward. I called them and they were working on it.

Two unrelated things:

From a recent experience, if you must fly to an audition, I would advise you to schedule a much earlier arrival than anticipated and plan on having flight delays, so you won't risk missing an audition. In my recent case, we had to spend the night in a connecting city (at full expense of the airline) and fly in the next morning. Our schedule had a layover of nearly 2 hours, but the first flight was delayed longer than this for mechanical problems. Carryon luggage might also be wise, as I had to fight with the airline to get our bags at the connecting airport just for that interim overnight stay and to check them again the next morning, which I finally convinced them to do. Airlines are either in or coming out of bankruptcy and reducing staff, so they do not seem very helpful these days.

Secondly, many of you are scheduling auditions on days that we are doing them. My son has auditions this fall and winter and in Chicago in Feb. So that I can be recognized, I'm always going to wear a flag lapel pin, and I may try to wear a navy pant suit. I'll tie a red ribbon on the handle of my backpack. Good luck to everyone!
