2009 Fall Transfer To NYU

hey everyone I'm transferring to stern but want to be realistic. I did poorly in high school and now go to PSU.

I want to transfer for fall '09. I will have 32 credits by the end of the year and my current GPA is 3.48. I have completed all classes they recommend to take and want to know if I should even apply or possibly get my GPA up and apply for spring '09

Applying to: Gallatin
Applying for: Fall 09
Applying as: Sophomore

HS GPA: 3.2
Major upward trend, with a 3.8 Senior year average
Took 4 APs got 3 on all of them: Physics, US History, Macro Ec, Psychology

Berklee College of Music
Current College GPA: 3.81
ACT Composite: 30; English Score of 32 which is good for Gallatin I think
SAT II: US History 720, am taking Math 1 in a few weeks.

Credits: 16 so far which is the most you can take per semester. Will have 32 upon completion of year.

Also:
Received A's in nearly all the major courses. Mostly music courses but in the upcoming semester, my schedule will have a mostly liberal arts courses.

ECs:
Leader in Hip Hop Alliance Group currently organizing a benefit concert for the spring.
Member of Berklee C.A.R.E.S. Community Service Group
Interned for two consecutive summers at a recording studio in NYC

In High School:
Jazz Band, Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, F.B.L.A., Drum Line, Indoor and Outdoor Track for 3 years.

Will have a great recommendation from my college english professor.

Reason: I want to be at a school where I can take classes at a variety of schools, CAS, Steinhardt, Gallatin, Stern, and be at a school with a diverse student body; ie. not only musicians. In New York City the center of the music business, my intended focus is Music Law. I originally applied ED to Tisch Recorded Music and was denied.

Chances? Thoughts?
Thanks!

so one of the biggest pros about nyu for me is the fact that they offer transfers housing and other resources, whereas most schools just give you the dregs of the housing draw and let you loose on campus. does anyone know if they house transfers all together, or when they say that a dorm houses transfers, does that mean that they just leave space in there for late housing applicants?

hey geb90,
to answer your question, all the transfers receive whatever housing is left after all of the NYU students have already picked housing options, so a lot of transfers will probably end up together, but not necessarily in one single place, probably spread out in 3 or 4 different dorms/apartments like Water Street, U-Court, etc.

anyone submit there application yet?

nyu44-Its a little early to apply, the deadline is april 1st.

new2nyu-Stern is EXTREMELY competitive, you should work as hard as you can to get your grades up, especially in your math courses.

I know that. I've been working on my app since august. lol.

hey guys. i have VERY valuable information that is really good news for all of you NYU transfers. I go to NYU now and i hate it, so i'm transferring out, but my mom works there very, very high up in the bureaucracy (dean of history dept). she works closely with admissions, and the admissions office cannot stop freaking out about the number of people who are dropping out of NYU due to the crappy economy and financial reasons.

In other words, admission for transfers is going to be at an all time high at NYU next year/semester. NYU is very dependent on tuition because they don't have a large endowment, so you guys are definitely in luck. The projected acceptance rate for next year is 65% (for CAS at least).

Good luck guys! Hope you have a much better time then I did at NYU =]

aww dreamer, i'm sorry it didnt work out! thanks for the info, it's sad that people have to drop out for financial reasons. why didn't you enjoy nyu? seems to me like people either love it there or hate it, I guess it's probably a right fit for some since it's isn't a typical college experience, but since that's a double-edged sword, it is probably the total opposite for others. I know this is totally random, but do you mind asking what the projected acceptance rate for steinhardt might be? and does that 65% apply to the transfers or freshman acceptance rate for cas? thank you very much for your information, i hope you find an amazing school to transfer to.

Dreamer- Hope you find the right school for you. I really wish NYU would give out more financial aid to help people out, maybe less people would transfer out.

Hello everyone. I hope you can chance me since my case is peculiar. I am a US citizen and I have always lived in Mexico. I went to a mexican High School which is 3 years long. After I completed my second year in High school I went to England as an exchange student for one year and when I came back I wanted to attend college in the USA and since I hadn't my High School Certificate, I got a GED in English. Because I was living in the border with Texas, I applied to the University of Texas Pan American (utpa) but still was going to High School in Mexico so I could finish it. After one year in college and High School I got my certificate from HS but my parents separeted indefinetely and my mother left to Mexico. I decided to go with her and because that was in late July I barely applied to one of the top mexican universities (Institute of Technology and High Studies of Monterrey, economics major) and I could not transfer any credits from UTPA, so I started as a freshman again. okok thats enough, Now I am about to start my fourth semester in Monterrey and I want to transfer to NYU and do an economics major.

This are my statistics:

High School GPA: 95/100
UTPA GPA: 3.47 (2 semesters, 10 courses, )
ITESM GPA: 90/100 (3 semesters, 19 courses, already took very strong maths ( actually, 2 calculus and linear algebra, this semester im taking math 4), 2 statistics, principles micro macro, intermediate micro macro)

ECs: Very few in college: Association of Creative Cinematographs Treasurer, Economics Student Society Member, National Hispanic Proffesional Organization Member. High School in Mexico: President of all Freshmen, President of all Sophomores, President of all Juniors, President of all Seniors

Volunteer on the Mexican Ministry of Economy in the Public Administration and organization of national events (more than 1200 hours during 2008). Community service in South Mexico tutoring pook kids maths and reading classes, college tutor in Calculus and Micro/Macro Economics.

Worked in a minimum wage job (Clothe Store)
I dont have any AP and IBP because they were not offered in my High School.

Recently I have been invited to a program called Excellency Exchange Program where the best economics major students are invited to attend Yale University, Berkeley or Georgetown for next summer 2009. The selection process is very competitive and faculty professors choose the students, I am so excited!

Thanks very much, hope someone can help me.

I forgot to say that I am Hispanic and I speak English and Spanish. Taking SAT January 24 (I know NYU doesnt need it but I am applying to another ones).

Thanks!

For you new SATS, there is no point of sending it in to nyu, cause they are not going to look at it anyways.

I am not seding them to NYU.

oh ok..........

okay everybody, i say we make this a non-chance thread starting now lol. i don't mean to offend anybody, but you are asking people who are applying to nyu to gauge your own chances - if you want to know your chances, your best bet is to probably create your own thread for it. nyu44, we need to keep this thread alive! haha

NYUjosh-Yes we do lol.

hey nyu44, do you know when we're supposed to receive our decisions from nyu? I know its early, but i want to be prepared beforehand haha.

Notification Dates: Summer and Fall transfer --> Early to mid-May

Hello all,
I am applying to NYU as a transfer for the fall of 2009. I don't have the best hs stats, and my college gpa is pretty awful. I went a bit mental since going to college and I discuss it in my essay. I'm hoping it is powerful enough to at least get some consideration. I realize my chances are slim, but I feel I've got to give it another try. Can anyone shed light on ways to strengthen my app, or what college I would be most likely to get into? I have A's and B's in all of my classes, except the sciences, which is why my gpa is in the gutter. I really appreciate any help I can get.
Best, emilyg
