I got into Stern, too lol
But, guys, how do you estimate the living costs in NY? how much do we have to spend per semester or per year?

-cost of living

(i’ve lived in NYC my whole life, and i’ve been at NYU for over a year now.)

it really depends on you. how much do you shop? how much do you like to eat out (by eating out i mean quiznos or chipotle, not fancy restaurants!) or go out drinking? will you have a meal plan?

without factoring in housing, i spent about 4k in one academic year, september to may. that 4k includes my groceries, shopping money, metrocards, NJ transit tickets to see my boyfriend, going out to cheap bars once a weekend and occasional ‘splurges’. if i was better with my money and didn’t shop so much, i could bring that number down. obviously, your mileage will vary in this department.

the big killer is groceries. around the NYU area, there’s a bunch of grocery stores, but most of them are overpriced. (trader joe’s being the exception.) i grew up in an outer borough of NYC, and i always pay less for groceries when i’m not in Manhattan. i’m pretty thrifty when it comes to groceries, but my roommate isn’t, and she blows through money like it’s water.

if i go out to party, i pretty much drink of off happy hour specials. i’m not a huge party girl.

if you’re living in an apartment, check craigslist and see what apartments are going for right now. i live in NYU housing so i’m not sure how much apartments are being rented for.

i always tell people that are coming to live in NYC/NYU for the first time to budget a little MORE for this first semester. you’ll be in an exciting new city and you’ll want to see and experience things, and you WILL go over budget.

Missamericanpie, thanks so much for your information! If I eventually go to NYU(As of now, I’m undecided) and have to make some budget plans, I will follow your advice. 4K is much better than what I’d previously expected, because I want manage my life at NYC within that 4~5K limit.

“”" Dear _ _ _ _ _ _ _,

Congratulations on your acceptance to NYU and welcome to the NYU community!

We would like to make you aware of the services the NYU Computer Store offers.

The store offers NYU exclusive pricing on Apple, Dell and Lenovo hardware –
usually our hardware is priced lower than the discounted educational price…“”"

[ Did anyone else get this email & actually call to find out if this meant we were in? I can see from the boards that others have asked about this, I’m just curious as if to whether this means 100% that we’re IN , because I received this email but nothing in the mail. Although it might be due to the long weekend the mail was delayed?!..]

You guys need to stop freaking out so much.

@damanja

it’s CC. that’s kind of an understatement, haha.

I didn’t get any e-mail and I called today to ask. She won’t tell me if I got in or not. Ugh.

I got that email and called and was told I had gotten in to Gallatin. I can also log into my NetID and set up my NYU email account, so I’m 100% in, I assume it’s the same for everyone else.
