I got my Dear John letter today, and well, i was initially disappointed, but i was surprised how i didn't really feel any strong emotion. I was just glad that NYU made their decision so i could move on with my other colleges after holding back for so long.

In the letter, it said,

"This spring, we received just over 1,100 applications for the approximately 200 spaces available for transfer students, making this the most competitive spring for transfer admission in the history of the University."

which does suck, i admit. Around 900 people will get the same letter as me, so don't feel bad if you don't get in. It sucks that it's really competitive this year. If you do get in, feel proud of how much people you managed to beat out.

I'll be heading to the University of Miami this Spring, and i'm proud to be admitted there. Sometimes, you have to adjust your dreams. :) I'm moving on. Best of luck to the rest of you guys and i hope you hear your decisions soon.

and btw, i was an international student, so i got mine by e-mail. i applied to CAS with a 3.5 College GPA. Plus, i celebrated by burning a piece of mail i got from NYU about the materials they recieved. lol..

well thats cool UM is a pretty good school and im so jealous you heard back already... its ust killing me.. i odnt even care anymore if i dont get in i just want to know

cherrybomb-i'm going to go find the block button after this if i can muster the energy because you just won't end it and get out of this thread. if you're not applying to nyu why are you here anyway?

i lost the argument? really? you didn't even attempt to approach my last post within the bounds of logic. now i wasn't on the debate team, but usually the one who breaks from the realm of logic in favor of ad hominum attacks doesnt have any ground to stand on, champ

you clearly have problems with reading comprehension...i never said nyu was an ivy. if what you are trying to suggest that an applicant with a 4.0 is going to be less strong at nyu (the relevant case) than harvard, well then yea ok...

and insulting the prestige of the school that everybody in this thread is applying to (sans yourself, apparently) by suggesting that it is "far from an ivy" is not in good taste...safe to say nyu has lots of kids in its student body who applied to cornell, upenn, etc...

and i'm sure everybody in this thread is very appreciative of you "sticking up for them." way to go, we're all forever in your debt, bow at the alter. and if you think that i'm "tormenting" people by trying to put them in a state of mind so that they are better able to cope in the event that they don't get accepted (although lots of them will) then get real

I'm not going to let this go any further in this thread, if you want to keep arguing about it then pm or hit my AIM but you're being beyond ridiculous

i look forward to resuming normal conversation after this, good luck everybody i know those decisions are coming soon

prince_will
good luck at the University of Miami! you seem like an awesome guy from just knowing you on the forum!

who knew how competitive it was going to be this year! 1,100 applications for the approximately 200 spaces!

when i receive my letter (rejection i'm sure) for some reason i will feel a little bit better knowing how competitive it was and that a lot of other people are in the same boat as me.

hopefully the rest of us will hear soon so we can move on with our lives.

dufflebagjesus- for nyu man! prince got a rejection letter that in part said
"This spring, we received just over 1,100 applications for the approximately 200 spaces available for transfer students, making this the most competitive spring for transfer admission in the history of the University."

dufflebagjesus, congratulations on getting in man because it was tough this year.

rcl - it sucks ass, i know, but i posted it here because i know some of the members here crave information. it's the harsh reality of the situation.

MichaelW - i'm just glad to know the decision. i was in college limbo waiting on NYU. I wasn't making any decisions/commitments to any colleges, i couldn't get my visa ready, and i couldn't get excited about going off anywhere. Now that it's over, i'm happy to just move on. I only applied to two schools (NYU and UMiami) which was a HUGE risk, but i'm glad that i'm at least going somewhere i like.

and thanks. :) it's great knowing you guys.

so my theory of not a lot of people applying because of the economy was wrongo! maybe everyone had the same idea as me! haha

que sera sera if the rest of us don't get in you guys. i have never said que sera sera in my life but i thought now would be an apt time. lol.

but seriously, if we don't get in it is not the end of the world! we will still have our heart and lungs and brain and all that stuff, so if tomorrow we open the mailbox and it's a rejection letter let's take it for what it is worth and move on to the other colleges we applied to or hurry and start other college applications.

on another note, it's great knowing all of you guys too. one day when i am 50 i will remember when i would freak out on cc with you guys and smile.

they probably accepted over 200 people because they know that not everyone is going to accept the offer so I would say anywhere from 250-300 ppl got accepted.

Prince_Will, sorry to hear about you not getting in but what school did you apply from? If you don't mind me asking.

Duffle- it's over. Go celebrate your acceptance. If you read my earlier posts, I am applying, for Fall 2009.

well look, it's not really that much different than past years. 200/1100 is an 18% admit rate (already much higher than what duffle initially claimed).

They will for sure accept more than that! I don't know the exact rate, but let's just say it's somewhere around 75% (probably less). That means they will probably accept 250-260 for their 2009 spring class. That's a ~~24% admittance rate, which is not THAT much different than other years.

The thing that worries me is that there are probably many internal transfers, which get preference. I wonder if the 200 number is just for CAS or for the school as a whole.

Fero...just out of curiosity what are your stats? I am also applying to CAS Economics with a 3.72 GPA ( ;[ )...

I was just reading a novel and some lady that just got her house burned down said "que sera sera"! hahah that's funny...

&&& I find this funny and irritating from the NYU forums:

Q:I've heard you have about a 36% acceptance rate. Roughly, how many of those are transfers and how many are freshman?

A: Not sure where that figure came from, and since we admit students school-by-school, a university-wide accept rate would be meaningless. Besides, if you are offered admission, the accept rate is 100% for you!

So I guess they have a 100% admit rate! Yay let's throw a party lol

princewill - sorry to hear, but very much congrats on miami, thats an awesome school! its still top 100 universities in the whole US :D

yea guys i guess you're right, i mean its just like whoever it was that got into northwester, was it you rcl? lots of the successful applicants are also admitted to other school, and in many cases, better schools, many of them have nyu as a backup for ivy league schools and such.. + im sure some may find out they cant get the financial aid that they want so theyll decline.. anyhow, i believe that yea, im sure a lot more than 200 were accepted.. im sure they wanna make sure all 200 slots are filled, and i guess its better if there are a few extra people than if many slots go unused.. since they make money off of us ;D

umm ,....
jaja not that good stats actually
hgihschool was horrible but i dont even know my gpa something like a 3.2
college 3.85
im an international student so i dont know if that helps 3 languages etc
good essays and good recs..
sat 2030
im taking duffles advice and preparing for the worst....

fero you have good stats! I had a slightly higher HS but you have a higher college which matters more. Hopefully we both get in and take Econ classes together, if not I'm good here in cali :]

I'm not so confident anymore..before I had a flame of hope...now it's more of a spark.

Now it's beginning to really sink in, people are hearing back, my decisions (for all my schools) aren't far away at all. I'm nervous as hell now, the numbers for NYU aren't really discouraging so much as they just make me wanna find out whether I got in or not even more now.
