2011 Horatio Alger Scholarship Thread

Oh no. They don’t notify the winners personally until March or April. They post up the national winners online in January. I think the state winners come later.

I don’t know the validity of this, but wikipedia says that the winners also get laptops.

Damn, this is one sweet but uber-competitive scholarship.

As I mentioned in the other thread, out of 50,000 (that’s what the association told me) people who apply, only 104 are selected as national scholars.

Hopefully we’ll see the national winners in 1.5-2 weeks on their website. There are only a couple of people on CC who have won on the national level last year.

Why am I not receiving these letters??? Did they like forget about me or something?

Some kid at my school won the National award, but ehhh I doubt I’ll have a shot. Considering how I improved my SAT score by 200 points after Oct. 30 :/

^They don’t put too much emphasis on your SATs. They worry more about your GPA. I heard the average SAT score for the finalists were in the 1700s.

Oh okay that works.
btw They post that kind of information? Is there a link…

They don’t post the information. I talked to a 2010 HA scholar a while back and she told me that the average income for national winners was ~15k and that the avg SAT was in the 1700s. I contacted the association about how many people apply and they said around 50,000. I guess the most direct way to get information is by calling the association.

ahh okay okay gotcha.

Happy New Year everyone, please post on this thread once you get any info! Good luck

Yeah, same situation here! Anyhow, I hope it will be worth the wait! Happy New Years Everyone, and hope to hear more later!

I got a letter from cumberland university congratulating me on being selected as a national scholar.
Today I got another letter apologizing for their error, that their list was of applicants that the college could contact, not winners. That they still haven’t announced winners.

I got my hopes up for nothing!

Hahaha, ouch! Hopefully it’s still a good sign, though!

elliemae1300, yeah that is strange. They’ve been making quite a few “mistakes” this year.

I wish I would get letters from random colleges

One of us should call them up one of these days. I really want to know when in January they announce the national/state winners. They close at 5:30 PM, and I can’t make it home that early.

The most important factors seem to be GPA, income, and your rec. If your AGI is ~30k, it’s highly unlikely you will get the scholarship. I would say anything in the 3.5 range is good.

Does anybody know which questions the letter of support asked? I don’t whether my essays and rec were good enough.

bork,
to be “likely” to get the scholarship, would the income be < or >(?!) 30k?

Do you guys think they consider family size when they look at one’s income? Because our income is on the high end compared to most applicants, but I come from a family of 7…

^probably. That info is definitely on the tax returns, and I think they even asked you to list out everyone who lives with you. I doubt that many applicants had families that big (but don’t take my word for it).

I called them today and they said they would post the national winners up online at the end of January…

the same thing happed to me. dont feel badd… i also have recieved fee waivers and other college papers because of the scholarship. I think if you are recieving these letersit means somthing…

Ok so around 5:30 pm, they called my house, and said that I won the national scholarship. woohoo!

The laptops aren’t guaranteed but they were awarded to people last year. The trip to DC is in April. They haven’t posted the winners up online, but they are calling people. So don’t be stressed right now if you haven’t gotten a call; they are obviously still in the process.

@Presidont, remember that link I put up on the other thread? At first, it was the 2010 list of national scholars, but my name, school, and location was there. I called them up, and they said it was an error. That’s why it didn’t work when you clicked on it.

Wow! Congrats!

Congratulations!
I haven’t heard anything
soo I’m pretty nervous. Needless to say, I’m depending on scholarships for college.

@bork I guess I’ll see you in DC this coming April! I missed my call, but was ecstatic when I read my email today!

I haven’t heard from them yet  I guess it’s safe to assume I didn’t get anything
