2014 Elks Mvs Scholarship

We should all hopefully be hearing news soon!

I applied for the ELKS MVS. Thanks to the person who posted the judging sheet. Frustrated some that it mentioned the importance of athletic participation, but that wasn’t conveyed in the application. I thought athletics was just part of the extracurricular activities not something to make or break a student. My extracurriculars, I believe, are pretty good- national and state level awards, but I did not put down my personal athletic items but concentrated on academic/community service items with the limited space.

The grading sheets also didn’t mention how to take into account financial “extenuating circumstances” that we were allowed to include. After doing some self scoring, I think my largest point deduction will be from the financial section if it will be completely on income/dependents. Just hope my other sections are strong enough.

@mich, when you scored yourself what did you get?

How soon is “soon”?

This week or next because my lodge said they’d notify winners at the beginning of the year

@jjonesjonny65- I scored myself with a 930 based on the scoring guide that was on here. My weak points were financial (which I hope they take into consideration the write up my mom did on extenuating circumstances) and SAT. My SAT read/math is 1360 which gives me 234 points. Just my personal opinion, but I feel very strongly about the rest. I have national awards like Congressional Award, Harvard Model Congress Merit Scholarship, full scholarship for cultural trip to South Korea. I have worked 900 hours while in high school. My community service hours might be low in comparison to some, but I think I am still strong with 498 hours. I’ve had many local and state leadership/extracurricular activities. My grades/classes are very strong with 11 AP courses especially since my school is very small (440 students total). I also provided 10 pages back and front with documentation.

Once again, financial and whether they will give points for the write up is my concern.

Umm, okay I’m feeling a little discouraged now, hehe. I really don’t have incredible stats as you guys. Might as well wait and see if I even get passed the local stage.

@juliaax5- don’t feel discouraged. Never know what they are really looking for. I might not even be considered or get past the regional. Pretty sure I made it past local since I got the impression I was the only one who turned an application in to my local chapter. Their phone number wasn’t listed on the ELKS website and I had to do some private investigating to reach them.

I’m just hoping to get something out of this

@jibler, me too! Lol I just want something

I have monitored this thread the last few days thinking that I’ll open it to a bunch of “I am moving on” posts… but it appears almost everyone is waiting! The suspense is tough. I’d be happy if my son won anything, regardless of the dollar amount. For those who have posted - have you applied for other scholarships? Getting something from the Elks Scholarship would be motivational to apply for more scholarships.

I applied to a few others, but it’s unlikely I’ll get anything…

I’ve applied for coca cola, rejected. I already applied for the Burger King one also. In have a ton of deadlines coming up. In all I’m applying for around 20 scholarships

My DD got a letter in the mail today indicating she was one of their local winners. The letter didn’t indicate the amount of the local scholarship, but said the board would decide by the end of January as to the amount. The letter almost seemed to imply that they were giving several scholarships, but didn’t spell it out, and it didn’t say anything about her application being forwarded onto the next level of competition. They said that they had received 52 applications.

@jibler Same here.

I’ve applied to those “huge” scholarships as well. And I applied to scholarships that are for Alabama residents only or county-wise scholarships. I would be ecstatic to receive any scholarships that are a big deal!

@juliaax5 what alabama scholarships have you applied for because I’m in bama as well?

I scored myself and only got 690 points… do I have any chance at all?

@jjonesjonny65 I know there’s one called the Smith Foundation scholarship (I didn’t apply for this one because it required for you to sign up for work study) & the scholarship if you have an ACT score of 26 or below. & a scholarship for girls that live in alabama (I’m assuming that this doesn’t apply to you, lol) And a scholarship for people who live in Mobile County, Baldwin County, Clarke County, Monroe County, Washington County, and Sweet Water High School in Marengo County. Not sure if this applies to you either. Also there’s the Jimmy Rane Scholarship, which I haven’t applied yet but plan to. But those are the “alabama” scholarships.

@juliasx5, I’m on the process of applying for the Smith scholarship. I didn’t know you had to do work study though. That’s stupid. I can’t apply for the college counts because its 26 of below ACT and I have a 27. I won’t apply for the jimmy rane, too competitive and I’m average anyways. And I live in Calhoun County. So no I can’t apply for that

How do you get notifications from elks. Is it by email or mail?
