<p>do you have any idea if coming from a state like mississippi, hawaii, or alaska helps? if so, do you think they would accept a decent candidate just to have candidates from all over the US?</p>
<p>You guys are so spoiled. When I got my news in the 1970’s, there was no internet (except maybe in a lab at MIT), no PCs, and no e-mails, just Post Office mail. And I was wait-listed at that. But I did eventually get in, and I did go. Good luck to all of you fellow nerds and geeks, whether you end up at MIT or not. It’s now popular to be a nerd and geek (“Big Bang Theory”, “Good Will Hunting”)</p>

<p>We don’t take students from underrepresented states “just because” they come from one of those states. But we do look at that in context. Our applicants from North Dakota are rarer than those from New Jersey. They may bring certain experiences - one ND applicant from a few years back was a blacksmith - that other students don’t. The sort of experiences that would help enrich the rest of our class. </p>
<p>So will being from an underrepresented state get you in to MIT? No. Will it possibly provide you with certain opportunities that would bring cultural diversity to MIT? Sometimes! </p>
<p>Let me put it this way - it will not make get in, but it can help, and it can never hurt! </p>
<p>And tomjones doesn’t know, because no one has told anyone anything at this point. He’s having some fun :)</p>
